Accuspark Electronic Ignition

Generally I have only ever run standards points in my air-cooled VW’s having had bad experiences with Petronix reliability. The 69 beetle we have came with Petronix and the inevitable happened it failed on me about 2 miles up the road.

My brother had been running the Accuspark kit for a while and it is fairly inexpensive compared to the Petronix so gave it whirl. First impressions of the kit was good apart from the distributor which looked like the Chinese copies you generally get these days.

I ran it a few days and was having issues getting it to time properly, a visit to local garage who fortunately had an old school distributor tester and it was running permanently in advance! They filed the weights down until it was correct advancing as it should. I also change the vacuum canister as it was not decreasing the revs quicker enough and touch wood it has covered a lot of miles and been fine ever since

After having so much trouble with the last T4 we owned I vowed never to touch one again. But Lisa has a new (old) one this time an early 91 California Westafalia 2.4 diesel and I have to say it has rather grown on me.
