I love tumblr because somehow I can end up being mutuals with a celebrity (someone that wrote a fic that I loved)
these are getting weird

i am well aware of the absolutely fucked up things eating disorders do to people’s brains, and i am sympathetic, but I still think acknowledging publicly that these celebrities are promoting looking emaciated on death’s door is important. Can you imagine being 13 and seeing this shit? Every celebrity event looks like a thinspo board, it’s awful.
People talk about women's bodies far too much; this is true. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be addressing the elephant in the room of insane weight loss and eds. it isnt fucking normal or healthy
#also rich women and famous women are NOT the same as your classmate Becky who doesnt eat.#they have more power money options and access to therapy and mental health and medical services of every kind#And power to influence the culture than any one of us ever will#and this is what they do with it??? Yeah no.#Plus calling out that someone looks dangerously underweight isnt the fucking same as#Like. Saying theyre ugly or idk any of the fatphobic body shaming other ppl hear all the time#it doesnt have to be the same as insults. Its just not and anyone who insists the two are always the same#is simply wrong or lying. Sorry not sorry#this shit gets people killed. Its way past time to name this trend as dangerous.#the fear of being perceived as Mean or a Bad Feminist has too many of us in a chokehold#and it does so much harm. We gotta unlearn it lets do it together

if you call a meme fascist people will defend it by saying we can't culturally defeat fascism by letting them have everything they claim for themselves and the meme in question is "reject modernity embrace tradition"
i know folks are gonna call me a pedo for this one, but i grew up seeing my mom and grandma naked. they had health issues and at times needed care and help showering. and i truly think more kids need to be shown the nonsexual reality of naked women at a young age. there is nothing sexual about my grandmothers breasts, they were simply body parts. more women die of heart attacks because people are too afraid of breasts to do real chest compressions, because they are scared to touch their breasts. the sexualization of our bodies literally kills us. i need people to be more normal about naked bodies and i'm 100% serious.

I wanted to give Harrison Browne his flowers in what little way I could so here’s this quick portrait. What an inspirational human being. (And the only pro hockey player on the damn show.)
Best of luck in all of your endeavors. I hope Connors got his room service.
We all deserve sunshine. ☀️
Real and growing possibility of him dying live on tv and nobody in the room noticing for minutes on end.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
