Artist Statement ‘Metroplex’ (2024) has its origins in a language-based work by American-born Fluxus artist Ken Friedman: ‘City’ (1967), an absurdist instructional text that charges the viewer to build a city made of found material, let it grow and expand, and then abandon it. Taking this text as a prompt for a collaborative work, Gregory Bennett started creating a 3D animation constructed from his large database of 3D animated loops created over the past 15 years. This developing imagery was shared with artist and musician Stephen Reay who built an audio counterpoint to the animation. This audio and digital art collaboration was also a response to a shared curiosity in the conception of ‘long sound’ to explore the relationship between audio and animation through a continuous and unbroken spatio-temporal/aural moving image work. The work is informed by philosopher Paul Virilio’s notion of “The Overexposed City” that posits advancements in media and communication technologies were dismantling the traditionally defined space-time of urban environments, rendering them less hospitable for human habitation. Virilio attributed this shift directly to the emergence of ‘telematics,’ which was reshaping spatial organization by reconfiguring established boundaries according to a novel topology. About the artists Gregory Bennett is a digital artist based in Aotearoa/New Zealand who explores utopian/dystopian paradox through representations of the multiplied digital body, using 3D animation in a practice that encompasses motion capture, projection mapping, and interactive media. Bennett’s work has been exhibited widely in art galleries, festivals and public spaces in USA, China, Australia, and Europe. He is represented by Two Rooms Gallery.
Steve Reay is a Professor of design, ecologist and artist who uses improvision and repetition to explore representations of wellbeing. He also recorded and performed as guitarist and vocalist in Flying Nun bands Vor-stellen, Avoid!Avoid and the Subliminals.

Edifice III (2022) by Gregory Bennett from Gregory Bennett on Vimeo.
Here is the full-length version of my work ‘Edifice III’ for Night Lights Denver, running September 1st - 30th as part of Supernova 7th Dimension presented by Denver Digerati, a month-long celebration of digital animation and motion art. This includes the original soundtrack I composed for the piece. Night Lights Denver is a month-long exhibition of animations commissioned by Denver Digerati running September 1st - 30th. Artists are selected based on their previous intersections with Supernova programming, and their adherence to pioneering digital techniques. Works are presented looping each evening commencing around 7pm on the facade of the Daniels & Fisher Clock Tower, Denver’s most iconic and historic building located in the center of Downtown. The non-traditional format offers artists an opportunity to compose and express their creativity in new ways, for an exclusive public forum that is seen by thousands of visitors throughout the month. Featured artists are Gregory Bennett, Sandrine Deumier, Dante Zaballa, Rew, John Butler, Mayta Gómez Molina, Dalena Tran, Julio E. Berroa, Yaloo, Beatie Wolfe, and Esteban Azuela. denverdigerati.org/7th-dimension-nld #supernova7thdimension #denverdigerati #gregorybennettartist #ivarzeile
