Developmental painting
Shown above are 3 stages of development towards the final 'Abbey Road' concept. Initially I wanted to try painting with sepia tones - as this was a first with me - alongside black and white to define two eras. I then wanted to introduce spray paint to block out areas of black tone and to create a different, more interesting texture.
This led to the use of palette knives, which I plan to use in my final painting, as tools instead of brushes. Again I wanted to play with the colours but layer tones creating more dynamics.
In my scaled up A1 piece I've used all 4 figures to make a full composition, with sepia, black and white, classic colour then modern colour. I've used the figures drawn previously from my sketch book. I've also used palette knives here to layer up and create a pattern of brush strokes.
Current problems:
- More detail must be included in order to understand fully the differences between each quarter
- I now need to incorporate objects into the background so my theme is clearer ie an old fashioned car, an old camper van (varied objects in general)
- Composition - The quarters need to be equal, with figures in the centre
Now that I am scaling up I feel it will be easier to sort these problems. I am also going to spend more time with initial sketches and layering paints.
Abbey Road
Drawn here are my 4 concepts to replace the Beatles in this famous photograph. This idea came about after looking through 50s imagery - I want to integrate 4 eras but couldnt find a way to do so.
I am progressing towards using different colour palettes across the image, starting with sepia, then black and white with full colour in the last 2.
I have found it difficult coming to a conclusion with regards to a final piece, as this theme is so broad, but I feel my idea here justifies the 4 eras.
In the background I want to include different iconic images from that particular era for example the '20s' quarter will have an old car perched on the kerb.
Here I have taken a series of photographs depicting popular celebrities of the 20th century and played around with them in an iPhone app called PixlrExpress+. Each filter/effect allows the viewer to see these images in a different light, which is also important for me as I would like to do this in my FMP.
Imagery is important to me for this theme, so I am going to spend more time manipulating photos electronically before I begin painting, see what happens.

We are an era of smart phones and stupid people.
There has been a shift in limelight from art to artist - music to musician - from the 20's to current day.
GLUTTONY
The scanned image of my fine liner and water sketch….
To develop this, id work on top of the A3 scanned image and interpret symbols for ‘gluttony’ using paints, embroidery and different material. I really like the method of this drawing as it was a messy fine liner drawing to begin with, i then added water to spread the lines and add tonal value. After finishing, i splattered water over the top to wash out some of the black and create a bluey purple effect where the ink has washed away

A fantastic stencil artist I have just found. My interest has shifted to using stencils as well as painting methods, most likely palette knives with acrylic. I love the messy, out-of-control effect the paint in the background contrasts with the realistic, regimented stencilled spray paints of the figures in the foreground.

Evaluation - Rachel
www.rachandfad.tumblr.com
Initially I looked at Rachel's blog, where I found things of her interest and lots of images of lines and geometry on buildings. She seems to have an 'obsession with repetition' - this could be interesting when introducing line and possibly geometry.
Sketchbook shows indication of messing around with line and a lot of colour, and communicating feelings in this way. Diagrams suggest sound will be used in sculptures to come, and probably in the final piece.
Rachel seems to have jumped to using the human body, which is interesting when hearing ideas word of mouth but needs to be documented somewhere I feel. Her idea seems very interesting - showing a cast of split legs with a video playing inside the vagina, meaning viewers must get into an odd position to see.
Maybe an integration of Rachel's love for line and repetition could be interesting. Possibly lost of different erotic casts of different leg positions hanging or propped up with only 1 showing a video - this means viewers will hear sounds from the video but will not be able to see it unless they look round all poses.
She talks about using pianos, and how she wants to include music, something which is also a profession of hers. How about taking inspiration from Steve Reich's Pendulum Music? Beaters could flick over strings in a pendulum motion, sounds getting faster and faster.
I am very intrigued by Rachel's ideas, and am looking forward to seeing developmental sculptures and eventually a Final Outcome.
A commission to be used as an album artwork. It's been a while since I used watercolours!

Asphalt Nation
A person must go way back to recall a time when cars were simply means of transportation. A very basic, old-fashioned machine - an automobile - enshrining that single focus: freedom. Today, cars are merely an extension of the owner. They make statements about character and status, generating a preservation of pride and arrogance. 24 hours in Beijing is the equivalent to smoking 22 cigarettes thanks to the exponential path transportation has taken. Water and air, the two essential substances on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans, and to who’s sorrow? The man in the bright blue Hummer?

Guitar music or rock n roll or whatever you want to call it sort of goes away with trends, but it'll never go away completely. It can't die because it is so fundamentally attractive.

Sleeping
After looking at Jeremy Mann's paintings, I was motivated to go away and create a piece using similar textures.
My 2 main concerns when using palette knives with acrylic paint are I always use a lot of paint meaning pieces will cost more to make and it was very difficult to mix black with white on my palette without using a paint brush.
Putting these two factors aside I feel this is a very strong method of working and I will have to pursue it deeper into my Project.
