[ The girl shifted in her seat, teeth catching her bottom lip as she looked over the letter, utterly embarrassed that she actually felt uncomfortable —— it was the dumbest feeling, honestly. But the idea of James and Mary made her skin crawl, so much so that she crumbled the piece of parchment and forcefully drowned it in her pumpkin juice, but not before scribbling down something witty. To hell with first years. ]

[ Lily’s eyes couldn’t have rolled back further ; wondering just what people at Hogwarts had in their heads that they wanted to hear about her ideas on childbirth. But, alas, she was bored —— replying wouldn’t do any harm. ]

[ Potions class was always a bore to the Head Girl  —— she enjoyed challenges, things that made her push herself, and this most certainly didn’t ; she knew how to make whatever their assignment was. Yawning, the redhead watched as both Gryffindors and Slytherins made their way out, chatting away about one thing or another, and she would have left promptly as well, had she not seen a familiarly well-used book left abandoned on a table. 

With a deep breath, Lily moved to pick it up, clutching the item close to her chest and shooting Professor Slughorn a last pleasant smile before she rushed out, trying to locate the black-haired boy. They weren’t in very good terms — she’d changed, he’d changes, the world around them had changed — but she told herself she was just doing the right thing. Giving a classmate his book back. Short legs moved as quickly as they were able ; a hand reaching out to tap Severus’ shoulder, slightly out of breath already ( lord, she needed to start running again ) — unsure how things were going to go. Lily’s “wild” summer, between her fifth and sixth year, didn’t only make her start enjoying the occasional drink. In hopes of forgetting what had happened with Severus, the girl had desperately tried to get away — socializing with the muggle kids she lived close to instead of the wizard boy she had been so hurt by. Most of her new-found friends had been smoking for years, always surrounded by a cloud of smoke anywhere they went; cigarettes dangling off lips and being passed around as if it were nothing. Soon, she too had a fag stuck between her lips and before she could realize it, she had fallen into a routine, lighting cigarette after cigarette as conversations progressed well into the night, sometimes into the first hours of sunshine.

It was a habit she took on quickly and, to this day, has no intention of quitting: it helps her calm down when she’s nervous, she likes the tarry taste it leaves on her lips and something about the grey smoke against a darkened sky makes her smile, the patterns beautiful and haunting. For the next two years of school, and while she did know, however, that she couldn’t do it at Hogwarts, the redhead saved packs all summer, hiding them in the bottom of her trunk along with a silver lighter she nicked from her dad.
