Hey everyone! It's me, ya boi, back with a humble request.
About three years ago, my dear friend @idiopathicsmile and I teamed up to fully write and track the first Shotguns album, Girl with a Buzzcut. This, of course, is Eddie Munson's fictional band in the seminal Stranger Things fic series by the amazing @greatunironic, the most remarkable thing, and other b-sides and rarities. it was an incredible artist experience, and there are a number of other songs we wrote and tracked too. (We need to get around to putting up the other albums, friend, let's get talking.)
The proceeds of the last big sale all went to Indiana Youth Group. This time around, I would like to propose that our profits go to Kaleidoscope Youth Center, an LGBT youth nonprofit based in Jess' hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

itâs 2024, and on christmas day dustinâs eldest daughter hands him a stack of records. theyâre used; heâd only asked for a new record player that year but dee wanted to do something more special than that.
âcan you guess who theyâre from?â she asks. dustin unties to bow, flips through the first couple records: waylon jennings, black sabbath, loretta lynn, springsteen, metallica. itâs a weird mix.
he shakes his head.
âtheyâre eddieâs,â says dee.
dustin feels his face go hot, his eyes prickle. he presses the records to his chest. el asks, âhow did you get those?â
âuncle wayne,â says dee. âheâd saved all of them after the earthquake. he said heâs got a lot, wants to give them to you each christmas, if youâd like.â
âi would,â says dustin, hoarse. the records smell like paper and plastic, like a thrift store. he imagines he can smell a little smoke, a little weed.
later, he takes them and the record player to his office. he puts on a townes van zandt record and just stands there, listening. âclose your eyes, iâll be there in the morning,â he sings. dustin closes his eyes, wishes. it hurts less, after all these years, but it still hurts.
el comes in after a while, wraps her arms around his waist. âdee is worried you did not like her gift.â
âi loved it,â he says. âi love it. i just ââ
âyes,â says el. theyâre both quiet for a while. dustin had never been good at sitting in silence, until el, and she got better at liking noise. âi spoke to max; she says we should go visit him tomorrow. make a day of it, she says.â
âyeah,â he says. âthatâd be nice, babe.â
el kisses him on the temple. âdonât stay up too late.â
âi wonât,â he tells her. âiâll come to bed soon, just â a little longer. i might call steve, heâll still be awake, i think.â
âyes,â she says again. its a good bet: west coast time zone, and severe insomnia, steveâs always good for a late night call. âi love you,â she says.
âlove you,â says dustin, and goes and sits at his desk, presses his fingers along the line of his bat tattoo. he calls steve, thanks him for the kidsâ present, his own. he asks about the guy steveâs been seeing, finds out they broke up a month ago after four years because the guy finally admitted he didnât want kids. a deal breaker, for steve; dustin hates that he keeps ending up with these assholes.
eventually, he tells him about the springsteen record in eddieâs collection, makes fun of it, because heâd once had to sit through a rant about springsteenâs performative working class liberalism that he didnât get then, and doesnât get now either, to be honest. steveâs very quiet for a while. he says, âi think, uh. you sure thatâs not wayneâs?â
âwayne gave it to me,â he says. âsaid it was his.â
steve makes a noncommittal noise. âwell.â
âyeah,â he says.
âwhich one is it?â
dustin looks. ânebraska? thatâs the sad one, right?â
âyeah,â says steve now. âi mean, itâs springsteen theyâre all sad if you listen hard enough. or about unions. anyway. hey, bud, shouldnât you be in bed?â
âiâm fifty two steve,â he said flatly.
he snorts, and a little of the weird tone in his voice slips away. âyeah, well, itâs still late there. go get in bed with your wife.â
âi love you,â he says, when they hang up. steve says it back, a little quieter, but he says it.
dustin changes the record. nebraska, now. he listens to bruce for a while, touches his tattoo again. then, he takes the needle off the record and goes to bed.
I just came across your fic 'the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that itâs you', thanks to the bluesky algorithm but I don't do well with sad / unhappy endings and there are no tags in the story to indicate anything I can go on. So.... I kinda wanna know if I would be okay reading it (as a notorious 'happy ending' craver) ?

hi! iâm a little loopy on ye old cold meds so forgive me if this isnât particularly coherent. but: for me this is a very âyour mileage may varyâ kind of story â i personally think itâs a happy ending that has sadness woven through it in a realistic way. itâs a story that deals with grief and life after a story ends and the passage of time. itâs a little âfour weddings and a funeralâ, itâs a little âthe big chillâ. itâs a little Scorseseâs george harrison doc. someone has cancer and that person does pass through the course of the story â but itâs not steve or eddie or any of the kids, and itâs pretty obvious from the beginning of the second chapter so if you feel like you need to bail out early you can! (itâs also not something thatâs actively shown â thereâs a joke about funeral requests in part three that i warn in the notes (though personally i think itâs very funny and spot on for that character) and the funeral itself at the beginning of part four is also warned for and skippable but most of the things dealing with it happen off screen and you just get love and grief and memories and someone at the end of their life trying to make sure their kids get their happy endings, despite themselvesâŚ.)
but, again, i think itâs a happy story â just realistic. hope that helps!
