your girlhood is exhibited on the floor beneath the passenger seat, a museum display of livelihood that rattles and shifts with each bend in the road and every twist in fate: emptied tin cans and flattened pennies engraved with carnival brands, flowers torn up from the roadside, guts ripped from dysfunctional scanners and overheated radars you rest your wet socks on. you spend this early life, without metaphor, as an accessory to the storm — packed into your father’s truck, running towards the things everyone else hides from. we chase storms, he tells you one night, so that one day there won’t be any more running — toward or away. we’ll just stand there and let them pass over us, clean as a sheet.

babe grows up the daughter to a meteorologist and storm chaser, her life between the ages of six and twelve something nomadic and dangerous, home-schooled from the passengers seat by her eccentric father while they floored through cornfields to track a twister.

at twelve they roll into great falls, her father having anticipated a hurricane rolling through the area in the oncoming days. at the local gas station they meet a man who would invite them to dinner after hearing about their intentions in the city - a gesture they’d grown used to given babe’s father’s warm charm and the southern hospitality of the great plains. unexpected was the land they pulled up onto that evening - jim ward’s ranch, sprawling as god’s eyeline.

babe is instantly besotted by everything she sees and the promise of everything she can’t. by the end of dinner, jim ward is equally interest in the advantages of a storm-reader on his property. a guest house is offered for the weekend, and in the end they never leave. a few months later jim ward sees hector miranda appointed as a meteorologist for the town, allowing the two-person family to live on his lands. quid pro quo, that seems to mean he gets an extra early heads-up when disastrous winds are rolling through

she grows wild once she’s put roots down - not in the sense of a wayward child but in the sense of dandelions and weeds, rocketing up and around everything in sight. catch preteen babe in the fields by moonlight, watching the switchgrass curl in the wind, or wandering too close to the howls at the edge of the woods. moving from girlhood to womanhood sees that wildness turns from the kind of weeds to the sort belonging to foxes and coyotes and wildcats, slick and coy. invents ship’s mast with the local boys, drinks whiskey with the old ranch hands, walks off from bush parties to skinny dip in the lake, etc etc.

dad expects her to return to their lifestyle after graduation, chasing degrees and then storms across the plains. jim ward offers her a job contract and a silent nod towards the hands cabin. nobody talks about the fact that this shouldn’t have been a choice she had to make. her father leaves down the dirt road and babe packs up and moves into an old cabin as the new wrangler. any stone the wards need turned, she throws her whole body into. it’s how she got all these bruises. 

throw in an Incident in her early twenties wherein babe enters the woods wearing white and returns in blood, only for the wards to hand her a map, a pen, and some bleach…

undying loyalty to jim ward/the ward ranch as an entity, but someone should probably start to break that down. do you love it because you love it or do you love it because it was the manifestation of all the things you never had as a child or because you were pitted against your own father by the man who mentored you or because you feel you owe a debt ??? WHOSE TO SAY

Marin Manrayar

Originally from Seattle, Washington. Marin spent nearly every summer with her sister’s at their Nani’s home in Great Falls, and she spent a few years as a teenager (after being essentially kicked out) here as well

She left Great Falls after graduating high school and went back to Seattle, until her Nani passed away and left The Sweet Spot, her home, and everything in between to Marin and Marin alone. That was about four years ago 

She’s currently living downtown, and is roommates with Rebecca Cohen 

BASICS — 

Born and raised in Seattle, the oldest of three girls. Marin grew up in a pretty strict home with parents who had high expectations for their oldest daughter, though she never met any of them. Their relationship has been pretty strained from day one. 

She’s a pretty classic tale of “never living up to her potential” because she got in with the “bad kids”. Marin had a pretty bad rep for fights, drugs, theft, and just generally being a shit head as a teenager. #Angst

She was suspended plenty of times, and went to juvie twice. Any intervention from her parents only made things worse, before they finally gave up and sent her to live with her Nani half way through her junior year. It was essentially a ‘clean up your act because we’re tired of trying to do it for you’ moment – And was the nail in the coffin for the last of Marin’s relationship with her parents 

Spending a year and a half in Great Falls went just as one would expect: Horribly. Marin was still up to the same bullshit she’s always pulled, though now she’s living with her Nani who is infinitely more patient than Marin deserves. 

She worked at the Sweet Spot after school and over the summer while living in Great Falls, where her grandma taught her the basics and helped inspire a love of baking. The two built a closer relationship during Marin’s time in Montana, proving to be one of the brighter spots of living in the middle of fucking nowhere.

Despite how close she was to her Nani, Marin ultimately decided to move back to Seattle after her graduation because she had no interest in living in a tiny Montana town 

So she goes back to Seattle, gets up to her usual shit only now she’s a Legal Adult and works in the kitchen of a shitty restaurant to pay for her equally shitty apartment. 

Fast forward four years and she’s got a few arrests under her belt, plenty of shitty exes, and is currently in a long term relationship with a man who’s engaged to someone else. She’s got no idea what she’s doing with her life, other than working dead end jobs and generally being messy.

All of that comes to an aggressive halt when she receives the news that her Nani has passed away, and in her will, she’s left The Sweet Spot and her entire estate to Marin. All of a sudden she’s a business owner and her life is all ??? because what the fuck, Nani. 

Out of obligation (and plenty of guilt too, for not realizing just how sick her grandma was), Marin packs her shit up and moves to Great Falls. Though she doesn’t want to leave Seattle, it ends up being just what she needs: A chance to drop everything and start over. Nani believed in her, and clearly felt there was more to Marin than what others saw – The least she can do is honor the woman by trying. 

Given the fact that Marin has no fucking clue how to run a business and isn’t nearly as skilled as her grandma, the first year running the Sweet Spot and being back in Great Falls is a fucking shit show to say the least. Eventually, she manages to gather her bearings (with plenty of help), and business starts to flourish again. 

Now, Marin bakes full time at The Sweet Spot and is living a relatively Chill life. She’s keeping out of trouble and focusing on herself, even if she’s not sure what that looks like in the long term. 

She’s basically an old lady these days, and likes to keep to her friend group but is still decently social – Especially since she (and her family) have history in town. Marin’s kind of an asshole but usually means well, and tries to keep out ~drama~ but loves to talk shit so she’s happy to hear the Hot Gossip. 

Even though she’s not getting arrested and homewrecking much these days, she’ll still be the first one to start throwing hands if provoked unfortunately.

A little bit about Liza: she’s a mess. She’s spent 17 years in New York pretending she’s got her shit together but she absolutely does not. This woman is a wild card with a mouth on her that would make a pirate weep and she quite literally does not give a shit about anything except three things: keeping her father’s legacy alive (and even that’s complicated, because half the time she hates him and half the time she’s a daddy’s girl, #daddyissues), getting her fair share of the money and land she and her siblings are going to be left when he finally croaks, and her niece. She means well but has a funny way of showing it, clearly.

He still is planning on buying the ranch someday, he’s just saving up until then. 

Currently lives on the Centurion Ranch in a house he built on the still Decker-owned land. It’s pretty empty considering it’s where he and Savannah were going to spend the rest of their lives, have kids, etc. but she’s been gone for 6 years so probably isn’t coming back.

So I have no where near enough room to write everything about her here without making the longest post ever. Her biography is over 1,000 words, but if anyone does want to read it all message me and I can link you to the Google Doc I have it on!

But the highlights:

Her name is Claudia Light, the fc I’m using for her is Alaqua Cox, she’s 25 years old, and is a high school English teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind (it was really cool when I found out that that is located in Great Falls). She had attended K-12 school at the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind herself, so is back at her alma mater, this time as a teacher.

She is Deaf herself, and also has a prosthetic leg.

She is adopted, her birth parents were from Wisconsin and were college students studying in Montana at the time of her birth. She was put up for adoption at a few days old, and was then adopted by Josephine Light.

She’s lived in Great Falls pretty much her entire life, but did go to college in DC from 2015 to 2019, she had attended Gallaudet University and studied Education with a Specialization in Secondary Education: English.

She moved back to Great Falls after graduation, and continues to live on her family’s property on the Heartland Ranch.

She is outgoing, and really enjoys swimming (particularly watching nowadays though), poetry, other performance arts, but really anything, she was in a sorority in college lol.

BIO TL;DR:  your small town chokes you from a young age. you grow up as a statistic, they call you a “product of your environment”. your parents hardly attempted the farce of marriage but by the time your little sister is born, they really aren’t together. mama leaves one night after an argument that leaves the police on your doorstep and it’s just the three of you doing what you can. your dad keeps the lights on and there’s usually something to eat in the fridge but that doesn’t stop you from turning your face toward the sun. one night he doesn’t come home. and you learn words like premeditated and you come to know the pitiful advances of your social worker all too well. following your father’s sentencing, you and your little sister are sent to live in georgia where you find your mother happily hunkered down with a half-family you only come to know of in the following summer. you mother becomes a bird that pecks at you for answers, anything to explain why you are the way you are. she urges you to do better, that you’re just like your father. you prove her right.

this man is basically just a latino, prematurely graying version of miles from baby driver.

may or may not have gone to prison for 10 yrs after his capture following a heist he pulled with friends as a teen. when he got out he moved back to great falls for a semi-fresh start and has been here ever since.

I’m super bad at being brief but I’m gonna try my best to be cohesive and relatively short with this but pls bear with me and my need to constantly ramble: 

While Becky is technically a Ward, she doesn’t really consider herself to be one nor has she ever truly identified with that side of her family. The only one she had ever been particularly close to was her aunt Liza and even then, they’ve only recently begun to reconnect after years of only seeing each other a few times a year. Her relationship with her father can mostly be summed up as near non-existent, the man having been in and out of her life for the majority of it.

She has been in Great Falls for the majority of her life, having grown up in an apartment on the East End with her mother. Her relationship with the woman is equally complicated — her mom is, at the end of the day, the person she loves the most in her life but substance abuse and health issues often lead to a shift in dynamics between the two, with Becky taking on more of the caretaker role in her teenage years and onward.

She postponed college by two years after graduating, choosing to stay home and work while trying to figure out what to do with her life. Ultimately, she went to Montana State University where she got her BA in Art History. Only a three hour trip from Great Falls, Rebecca still came home often during her school years but really ended up thriving with the little bit of distance and freedom. It allowed her to focus on herself and figure out who she is outside of who her family needed her to be. When graduation began to near she toyed with the idea of moving to another state and a bigger city, maybe even continuing her education but a bad break up lead to her tucking tail and coming back to Great Falls. It hadn’t been ideal, but two years later she is content with the decision and knows that she’ll likely never leave again — not permanently, at least.

Currently she works as an assistant curator at Abbott Gallery and she really, really loves it. Ideally she would love to be able to make a living off of her own art, but she knows that realistically the chances of that being her primary source of income are pretty slim so she’s happy where she is and working her way up the ladder. The idea of opening her own gallery one day has floated around her mind once or twice but at this point in time she knows she’s still young and inexperienced in the industry and that if it’s something she ever has the confidence to do, it is a long ways away. 

She has an apartment downtown where she spends the majority of her time, but she still pops in to check on her mother and spend time with her often. She’s also been spending more time at the Ward ranch in an effort to reconnect with her recently returned aunt and father. 

She is an ENFP, Libra, Neutral Good, extrovert and often finds herself sticking her foot in her mouth because she says the wrong thing without thinking, or she just simply says too much. She’s been knowing to take criticism too personally and can, admittedly, be overly sensitive but she means well and she’s generally a friendly person and tends to strike up a conversation with someone just about everywhere that she goes.

Occupation: Head of Acquisitions of Remington Power 

She is the second oldest of John Decker’s children and the oldest girl. 

She has always been closest to her brother Bash, only because the two were close in age - and they v much would try and kill each other, but also kill anyone who tried to hurt or talk about one or the other. 

Probably the most outspoken and unbothered of the Decker children, and literally hates Montana. 

She loves her parents, but like kinda resents them at the same time? Especially for all the hardships, they had to go through - but all Sawyer ever wanted to do was make their parents, especially her father proud. 

She was cheer captain, soccer captain, and homecoming queen in school. 

Def snuck out a lot and went to bars while underaged, etc. Gave bash and her parents a lot of wrinkles. 

When she turned 18 she left Montana, for Georgia where she attended Georgia university, and eventually became head of acquisitions of Remington Power and Energy, the largest energy supplier on the east coast. 

She probably only came home like once or twice over the years, and they were probably for funerals. Never spent holidays at the ranch or in Montana at all - but sent her parents and Bash money every month to help with the ranch or their parent’s medical bills. etc. 

Now she has been back for like 4 months, and is miserable, she can’t wait to leave, unfortunately for her - Remington is opening a Montana office and wants her to run it.

New Hand at Ward Ranch; peewee football coach

A little bit about them:

Ryder holds the title of “Last Baby Born at Great Falls General in 1994″, coming into the world on December 31st at 11:56 pm. That’s his ice breaker fun fact.

He loves animals, so growing up on a ranch was his dream. Chasing after the dogs in his great uncle John’s house on his hands and knees when he was barely a year old, to toddling after his cousin Sebastian to pretend to help brush the horses. The only thing he wanted from life was to be one of the cowboys that he saw all around him. He wasn’t scared to get his hands dirty as he got older, barely complaining when his older cousins tried pawning off the grosser chores on the ranch to him once he could see over the equipment they used.

He was just a happy kid overall, always surrounded by friends. He would be out of the house the second the sun was up and be running around until his mom had to call his name as the street lights were coming up.

He’s played football since the day his mom caved and decided that he was old enough to be in contact sports. He loves it.

He helped out on his great uncle John’s ranch for most of his life, getting more responsibility as a teenager. He absolutely adores working with the animals.

When he was 17 and riding a horse, the horse got spooked and ended up bucking him off and sent Ryder flying. Because of the head injury, he became deaf in one ear.

While Ryder always imagined working on a ranch, he has zero interest on the buisness side of it. So when John Decker said that he was selling the ranch, while he was upset, he was not as angry as his cousins who wouldn’t get a chance to run the ranch that has been in their family forever. 

After meeting the new ranch owner, Ryder opted to get a job as a ranch hand at Ward Ranch.

he has a one year old australian shepherd named Holly. unfortunately for Ryder, he is Holly’s second favorite person. 

He coaches peewee football with some of the guys he played football with in high school.
