random 500 word flip and gradient drabble (pre-fic, flip is ~18 and gradient is ~10)
āItās bad, isnāt it?ā
Gradient looks all too small swathed beneath the fabric of Veeās hoodie. Yes, Vee had been smallāin the space she lacked physically, she made up for with a voracious temperābut the way the dark cotton clings to Gradientās bones, sullen and swamped, reveals just how awfully young Flipās little brother is.
Ten.
At ten years old Gradient sits across from him, drenched in the shadows of their dead sisterās jacket, preparing himself to introduce himself and their other siblings to the Underground that had stolen everything from them.
Flip adjusts himself. The bed creaks and the place where his leg no longer remains, aches.
He remembers the axe. The burning; The realization; The dust. Flip had thought that it was the worst thing that would ever happen to himārevenge stolen in haste and ill accordanceābut⦠then. Well, then it had happened.
Still, it smells sweet. Still, Flip is haunted.
Maybe if theyād gotten the whole prosthetic situation ironed it earlier, he would have been able to stop it. Maybe if he hadnāt needed so much pain management, theyād still have the money. Maybe he wouldnāt have been a coward. Maybe heād have stopped it.
Maybe, for once, Flip would have followed his first instinct.
āI-It is. Right?ā Gradient tries again. His mouth curves into a frown at Flipās continued hesitancy, and yet another glitch wrecks his spine like an electric shock. It was almost unfair, how much he looked like her. Thereās the same displeased quirk of his brow as his gaze drops back to the papers laid in front of them: the outfits Palette and Trebuchet would wear upon their debut. And, thereās that same hardened determination, cobbled together with a single breath and prayer, as Gradient considers Flip once more. Itās sillier on Gradientās round features. A kitten drawing their claws. Pitiful, as it is endearing. But, it gets the message across. Of course her shadow would carry her visage. Of course, her ghost remains. āBad? Itās bad, right?ā
āYes.ā
The answer falls too neatly from Flipās mouth. Yes, it was bad. Horrible. Awful. Again, the cycle repeats. Again, his family will be torn apart by greed and circumstance. Palette and Trebuchet were just as young. Just as naive. There is no other outcome. There has never been any other outcome.
But⦠maybe there is? Maybe history would be a blueprint, for once. Hope. Just maybe, thereās hope. And, so, Flip finds a nearly harsh, āNo,ā shaping his speech. No, it doesnāt have to be. It wonāt be. Heāll be there; Theyāve seen what happens, when tempted. Itāll be different. He thinks. He prays. Butā¦
But, how can he know?Ā
Yes? No?Ā
Maybe?
āI donāt know,ā Flip finally settles on. His swallow scratches his throat, tasting too vividly of acid and indecision. He tries not to look at how Gradient has stilled. How, so clearly, heās done his best not to flinch.
Flip, idly, wonders if Gradient would let him tailor the jacket. Tighten it up, and make it something that wonāt weigh him down. Dye it into something different. Alter it to who Gradient wants to be, as a person. Perhaps itās a selfish desire, though. Itās hard, seeing the way the cloth drags on him: a last, helpless plea. The darkness suits him; The silhouette will be grown into.
ā...Okay,ā Gradient finally murmurs. He shakes his head. Scares away the rumbling glitches. āI-Iām⦠Iām worried.ā
āDonāt be,ā Flip wants to say. Gradient shouldnāt bog himself down with such thoughts. Worrying wonāt stop the inevitable. It would be all too mean, though. Honest. āYou should be,ā is his kinder thoughtācloaked in harsher reality. To be aware is the first step; You must know your opponent. And, yet, both answers refuse to be known. Flip finds himself at an honest loss of words.
Before Flip can try again, it seems his lack of answer has been taken for what it is.
It is how it is; It is how it will always be.
Too much; Too late.
āOkay,ā Gradient repeats. He shrugs his shoulders: embraces what weighs him down. With newfound confidence, he pushes the papers over. āCould you. U-Uh. Give your thoughts on the d-designs?ā he asks, gesturing down to his own hurried scratches: clearly redrawn, erased, and redrawn again.
Slowly, Flip picks them up.
Heāll try.
He doesnāt know if it matters. If he can; If itās worth it.
But, at the very least, heāll try.
Day 164
Apple mmmm. Ngl poor Dream, his life is basically a tragedy with no actual end in sight.

any lore youd like to get into about lev that wont be explored or discussed later on/isnt spoilers? maybe fun facts or something of the sort?
Hmmmmm.... there is some stuff that will be explored later on.
He's still an afterdeath kid--conceived during a certain gyftmas party. He likely would have been abandoned/not acknowledged if not for the fact that Reaper was the one who carried, which was a bit of a surprise (usually for fae/monster couplings, it's the monster who carries due to the nature of how reproduction works for them both. if people want I can go more in depth into my reproduction headcanons). Reaper and Life were in an open relationship at the time, so it wasn't cheating--but the pregnancy Was a shock. Lev ended up being raised by both Reaper and Life as if he were a normal fae child. Geno has decided to take a step back in his life, he's still There as a trusted adult but he isn't really a present father for Lev.
Lev, like Mess, was also occasionally watched over by Dream as a little kid. Lev and Trebuchet are also close friends.
He likes watching surfing compilations on youtube. He hasn't ever surfed in his life but in his soul he's a surfer. California beach guy kin. He does know how to skateboard though. He isn't good at it but he knows. He tries so so so hard to be cool
He doesn't like his wings. He thinks it makes him look too much like Reaper :(
it makes me sad to see among the already small population of drink enjoyers, most view them as forever divorced exes / toxic like oh my goddddd ...... yall are playing in my face...........
