♡DRAWING HAIR STRANDS♡
This tutorial is for both Photoshop and GIMP! The Photoshop tutorial will be at the top, and the GIMP tutorial will follow. This is a pretty simple tutorial but it’s mostly just for adding a couple of strands here and there :) You can download GIMP for free here. Keep reading for the tutorial.
PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL
Step 1. Start with all of your layers merged together so everything is on one layer. Now create a new layer using the icon at the bottom of the layers window. Make sure you have the new layer selected.
Step 2. I created this really simple brush to use (it’s really just two different sized dots), you can download here. Click on the smudge tool from the toolbar. Make sure you you have the strength set to 100% and you have checked Sample All Layers.Â
Step 3. Next make sure to open the Brush Window so we can adjust the size and other options. I just left the size at 10 px but you can change as needed.
Step 4. Now click on the Shape Dynamics Option to the left of the Window. Under the Size Jitter Option you will see a control drop down. Change it to Fade, you then need to change the number based on how long you want the strands. For the long strands, I chose 400. You then take the smudge tool and start dragging from the hair down and out a little. You have to start somewhere on the hair to get the right color. I spend a lot of time undoing and redoing strands to get them how I want.
Step 5. For the little strands I changed the brush size to 5px and the Fade number to 200. You can play around with these settings to get different sizes of hair strands.Â

GIMP TUTORIAL
Step 1. Start off with your edit all on one layer. Now Duplicate this layer by clicking the icon on the bottom of the layers window. You should have two layers that look exactly the same. Make sure you have the top layer selected.
Step 2. Next click on the smudge tool in the toolbar. Change the Brush to the 1.Pixel option, I set my size to 3.00 and I check the smooth stroke option. Also make sure to change the rate to 100.0
Step 3. Now start dragging out some of the hair, try to make it quick and smooth, you can always undo a piece if you don’t like it.
Step 4. The ends are a little blunt so we’re going to take the eraser tool and erase some of the ends. I chose the 2. Hardness 050 with a size of 50.00. I then careful erased a little off each end. It will only erase this second layer. Your first should still be intact.
