writer, thinker, poet, photographer, wonderer, believer, original, trusting writing, unemployed except for following my own voice and vision, working on my sense of things, feeling like it's always starting over at the beginning and that's a beautiful thing; at the beginning of middle age having put in the 10,000 hours and disqualified myself from every road except continuing on into the dark, realizing the pleasure of writing this bio https://linktr.ee/gplewis
āBut I am convinced that the language that has the most force, requires the most acumen, talent, grace, genius, and, yes, beauty, can never be, will never again be found in paeans to the glory of war, or erotic rallying cries to battle. The power of this alternate language does not arise from the tiresome, wasteful art of war, but rather from the demanding, brilliant art of peace.ā

have you seen Call Me By Your Name?
can we be boyfriend-girlfriend for a night and watch it?
can we make pancakes in the morning and take the dog for a hike?
HER
Of course I have seen it. I listened to the audiobook version of it, too. Something I donāt usually do (audiobooks), and the book kind of drove me mad, but I adore the movie.
I would be your boyfriend to your boyfriend, I canāt be girlfriend to another already
ME
i would like to see you as a man, be dominant and masculine, full of hunger and rage, and use me up, burn me down
i'm a lot to exhaust but you could do it; i'm an elephant to eat
HER
Okay, Iām not like, a toxic man.
ME
i like nice boys
any kind of boy can get along with me
HER
Well it doesnāt get to be both. Men are mad enough at women as it is for liking bad boys when all they say they want is someone to treat them nice
ME
well, tenderness and cruelty go together
HER
Lifeās quandaries
ME
fierceness and kindness
rigor and forgiveness
perfection and mediocrity
i make room for both, both the other's and mine
i am a perfect lover ~ hence, unemployed, but seeking! ready!
what you really want is not even what you really want
you want it all, and nothing, and to be left alone, and to be seen but to be able to control and decide how you are touched, how you are torn apart and beckoned out of your shell
how to merge your real image and surface with the shape of the divine as captured in art
will you give me your quandaries tongue to tongue in the warm cave enclosure of our mouths touching, making a tent of heat
(these are the flirt monster championships)
HER
(I am in the flirt monster championship? I am in the ring? Facing off against you? How did I land here, I donāt want to be here. I am not prepared for this.)
You can have the trophy
ME
just play, baby
no ends, no rules
take your deepest pleasure, you have full access
the only failure is to back off in hopes of finding safer depths
HER
Well, then, I fail. For I am only just now learning to show a naked soul, and only a one there is who gets to see it in all its pitiful glory. it is not alluring but tastes like the neck of the kitchen sink after the metallic clanging on the garbage disposal has been clanging after dinner.
It is not alluring, it causes a lot of duress. And to bare the kind of request youāre invitation asks would only cheapen the labor of what it is I am doing here.
But I think you are having fun, and I encourage fun-having to be experienced at all levels, so long as the fun doesnāt interrupt with another oneās safety
āHe is the most fortunate of men who can trace an unbroken connection between the end of his life and the beginning.ā
ā Goethe, as cited in Rainer Maria Rilkeās Letters to a Young Poet (Commentary, Note 3, Page 12)
āIf Goetheās dictum be true, Rilke was blessed indeed. He told his biographer that the roots of his lifeās work went back far into childhood. Rilkeās life was peculiarly of a piece, a coat without seam ; nothing that enriched his last great poems was not discernible, in rudimentary form, in his earliest writing, and not one of the essentials of his youthful character and genius appears to have become atrophied in him. At the age of thirty-five he was still reliving his own childhood, with fascination and with anguishā¦he looks to the integrity of childhood as the only resolution of the fatal dichotomy between the actual and the possible in human nature, and to its timelessness as the only answer to the challenge of time.ā

closeness Colossus cannot be forgiven, only received
i have lost my taste for what a reader would like; the idea of a reader satisfies the fantasy of someone to love me at my lowest, when I don't know if I can turn into a person who could be placed in the world
ā
i am not trying to make this anything
so it can be anything
ā
price governs freedom and life
ā
i am healthy enough to suffer
ā
parents are a lie like sex is a lie lol
there is no place to be rejected for a bad opinion that feels as deep as you want to be punished
there is only light, no hate
ā
the present just keeps overwriting reality; there is always more. Reading used to be the height of intimacy: now it's showing up
ā
lossy compression heart emoji ā fade out to album art
ā
can i talk to you now?
ā
WOMAN REPRESENTS THE ORIGIN, MAN REPRESENTS THE DISTANCE
ā
i simply attend sounds which are always new
ā
the shock of intimacy's ordinariness: it could be like this all the time
ā
we are what we do not post, online
ā
the brutal emptiness of digital arrival
ā
death is in the air
no more than usual
ā
the truth is 12 internet friends is all you need
ā
you know it's easy when you have a home
ā
i have perfected my longing but not the object
ā
does "the top" even register?
ā
the drama of finishing, taking forever, the mortal encounter, the job interview to be prepared for, to be assessed for fit: do you speak the right language, oh how we seek belonging and approval and acceptance and being told YES we want you, but all this longing with no receptor is and becomes an entertainment network
ā
we don't deserve it, we are not worthy
ā
i am glad my job is information, it is showing up
ā
there is no success, there is sound
ā
selling holds the world together
we float on an electrified grid of transactions
time is possible because of money
whose money is it?
ā
fear of people rules everything in my brain; music loosens it up, destroys the divide between people
ā
i was in love with turbulence
ā
the glory of there being nothing to prove
ā
witnessing another's authenticity can be tiring as a prospect when you're not in the act itself, but here, distant, alone, thinking about it
ā
writing really is a meditation, but the meditative state or object does not depart ever; consciousness is always there ā so, lonely kinship with these words and concepts is not enough to sustain one; it must be practiced in community, common tongue
ā
you can always return to peace
remain open; think of others
ā
perform at your very best even if it goes nowhere? all this lonesome writing is meant to be discarded, not even turned around but discarded by love, and life is all that matters: the emotion of the present moment, forgetting the track record
ā
dissatisfaction is my ink
ā
i am a ripe square one

the seats are empty.
the theater is dark.
why do you keep acting?

the dead are not enough to love me
ā
the poets and artists practice peace, wonder, uncertainty, openness
ā
i don't know which filed corpse to add you to
i'll find out
ā
the question (maybe) is where i'm connecting with people
ā
hunting with kindness
my soul-sword drawn
no one to tell; the advanced loneliness knows
ā
the ache of closeness
ā
this need not be timeless; it's always new
ā
poet as athlete of memory, lol it's true
ā
there is nothing else to do, afterwards, but Be; show up to whatever your work is; there is no getting free
ā
you are forgiven
for your life not having been different
ā
the only message i have is "I AM"; that's the one that lasts
every cord and chain cut, he goes into the day with nothing but his guts and gray
streaks, a goatee that used to spell rebellion, some friends like you remember,
you were there and still remain here in the voice, I can hear it as you now in my
desperate head, true friendship indeed reigns, and adulthood in America? I mean,
God damn, what a mess right? Itās truly a harrowing time to be awake and be making any decisions at all,
but what else can ya do? Log on, push the sword, try to deny the terrible fact that capitalism did indeed melt the planet,
depress and enflame a generation of youth who of course hate every incumbent and stakeholder in the regime today,
the one that made everyone sick and sad and lonely, smiling but ulterior, a fanatic committed to escape and rest from
thinking too hard about what my agency means, MY, yes, ME, remember you? You, not I, but I all the same
friendship is nothing but a delayed presentation of the billāsomeone, us, must pay for cleanup on aisle seven
our life, the planet, the psychic damage being wrought by the next ping (tell them hi for me k?) and everyoneās addiction to inbox zero, bank account enough, body stretched and hydrated ~ maybe itās not so bad
God watched them. God, who has no problem with this sort of thing, having invented it.
She was drunk and she was luminous and she was performing and she was genuine, all four at once, which is what God made women capable of and what men spend their whole lives failing to understand is not a contradiction.
He was sober and he was thieving and he was devoted and he was guilty, all four at once, which is what God made writers capable of and which only other writers will forgive.
She said: everyone wants to be worth fighting for. God noted she was right. God also noted she was saying it to a man with a pen behind his ear, which is its own kind of prayer answered.
She said: i'm not into this independence shit. God, who designed interdependence into the atom, agreed without comment.
She said: we don't have enough words in the english language. This is the one thing God is still working on.
He put in his earbuds because his arm was tired. God forgave him immediately. The arm gets tired. The heart keeps going. That asymmetry is by design.
He opened a notes app. God has been doing exactly this since before there were apps ā since before there was anything to note. Witness is the oldest occupation.
She said: you are not as tough as you think you are. She was talking to him. God was talking to both of them.
She said: i hope you don't live the life i lived. it's lonely, hard, misunderstood. God, who has lived every life, said: I know. And made no promises.
She said: the world is kinder to me than it will be to you. God considered this the most honest thing said all night, and the most tender, which is often the same thing.
God noted: the man who steals beauty and calls it devotion is still devoted. The woman who performs vulnerability and means it is still vulnerable. The performance does not cancel the meaning. The theft does not cancel the love.
Both parties were using the other for warmth. God invented warmth for exactly this purpose.
She said: you have to really like someone to fall asleep with them. She was drifting. He was writing. Neither was asleep. Both were elsewhere.
She said: bury myself between your chin and your shoulder ā vanilla, cinnamon, chamomile. God, who made noses before God made anything else worth smelling, received this as a completed prayer.
She said: from fuck off to i love you in 31 hours. God smiled the way God smiles at time-lapse photography of flowers opening: of course. That is exactly how long it takes. That has always been how long it takes.
She said: any minute now i'm gonna hang up. She did not hang up. God, who has heard this exact sentence ten billion times, is never tired of what comes next.
God closed the notebook. Both of them were almost asleep. The line was still open. God left it open. God always leaves it open.
Here's the raw. I really enjoyed it. Sometime tonight I'll run out of "I" to burn like nutrients, calories; the genius is physical, unrelatable, limited. This only need make sense for tonight yet like Goethe's lyrics can supply a century's worth of dialogue and libretto. Big words, I'm boring, the truth however is I can't shut off and becoming Cute could be the work of my life once I realize work is simply stenography and acceleration toward defined audiences now, marching at the clip of quarters i.e. the war machine's cadence, nation-states and judgmental ideologies and dogmas which cannot be wrung out quickly, like evolutions in governance of humans which take millennia;

even with your girlfriends you only get a few diva queens
you canāt always be oh iām late oh i donāt wanna eat this iām sorry guys can only get a few āi donāt knowā points, you canāt not know anything, thatās not cool, and you really canāt not know the big things (sheās tweeny and drunk and childish)
if you donāt know the two big union holidaysā¦i donāt know, baby
(on her widow friendās guy friend not knowing what diwali is)
weāre the biggest idiots iāve been in a long time
everyone wants to be worth fighting for
thereās a difference between fighting for someone snd stalking them (itās a pretty low bar for boyfriends these days: donāt be a rapist or serial killer)
if youāre dating someone and they say iām leaving (theyāre gonna want them to beg you to say)
iām not into this independence shit, itās such garbage, itās why thereās an epidemic of suicide and depression in America, because theyāre too proud (C.S. Lewis: money is bound but pride is scale-free)
i need someone to hold me and love me
and this country needs more people like me
your vulnerability and your ability to be rejected by everyone youāve ever known for 20 years, praise Jesus (when America says weāre so glad youāre here, to second-generation immigrants)
next time you show up to meet a woman in a suit, and she undoes your tie, when you get home, donāt undress yourself
assertiveness training tomorrow
you think youāre the queen of indifference, and you met the king of indifference ~ iām divorced with two kids. iā¦met you twentysome hours ago. so my sister and i were watching TV. way to ruin a good night, big sister. i could not get back into the right headspace because i could not stop hurting from my nephew and i am here because (good stenographer practice) - i already have a soft spot for you, that i think is wet but anyway, iā¦iā¦uhā¦youāre not as tough as you think you are and you do not have to live the life i livedāand i hope you donāt, i really hope you donāt, itās lonely, hard, misunderstood, not appreciated, and 15 years later youāre gonna be angry (to my surprise, most men write their least angry stuff young; old curmudgeons are common) ~ i think i have figured out enough the world enough for now ā [citing my experience in hell, 15 years] ~ the world is kinder to me than it will be to you
iāll keep listening as long as your awake
cool, iām here, i wanna kiss you
just imagine iām saying whatever it is you want to feel
i only met you a day and some ago and i want so badly for you to be happy
you know, we donāt have enough words in the english language (words for love: Greek or Hindi or Urdu. I donāt know how to say love without it sounding wrong
we could drive revenue 3x, we could finance vacation homes, we could be on a porch swing drinking lemonade
you have to really like someone to grow old with them
you have to really like someone to fall asleep with them
goodnight my dear, my girlfriend until tuesday
kiss me
bury myself between your chin and your shoulder, your neckāvanilla, cinnamon, chamomile
can you sneak in through the window? i donāt think so
itās more energetically expensive for the elders: you have to choose which balls to chase
i could come over and come in through the window, quoting Romeo: what light through yonder breaks? She is the Sunā¦
heyā¦you can want someone and still wanna go to damn sleep
legally obligated to stay on the phone until she falls asleep
letās just kiss my neck, stop, oh my god
obedient paladin obliged to oaths
iām just gonna go to sleep soon OK? youāre right i donāt want you to hang up, i donāt want you to leave me, i just met you, itās tragic
youāre smarter than you look
i know i can have a career as a sex object, so i had to fashion myself into a weapon of another dimension, black magic whose mirror shield is devotion and exit, loyalty and lust for return to The Idea of some future Her for which the human in front of me is merely practice. I throw Love out the window as a matter of course and occupation ~ Being alone is our work, Maria Callas said; I worship the dead while conversing with
thanking me for being the opposite of every man who still haunts my memory
my clairvoyant vulnerability
mmm, nope, iāll give you one more guess as to what iām thanking you for
being gentle and kind. oh my gosh, fine, iāll give you One more guess. If I give you a hint youāll figure it out, Please
you found a Soul Mate and it was easy and it just appeared
I donāt know, are you a soul mate? You were kind to me when I was hurting
you see my calling is beyond worldly vocation, talk of the Archangelās road trip around the sun, zooming toward more hosts while held by one at a time
shh, Iām not Simon or Schuster
thank you Geoff for not making me feel
mmm, plain English
for not embarrassing me in front of my sister
even though you did embarrass me, thank you for helping me recover
thank you for being kind enough to hold my heart in a way that didnāt hurt. Oh Iām pretty good LOL. Whewā¦nice to meet you, Geoff ~ the honor is mine
Do you think Iāll see you before you leave? Maybe, I mean, two in the morning, you wonāt let me see whatās happening: Am I really tired?
All of your models of simplicity break down in front of me; if I never saw you again, ever, would you remember me? Yeah, I told you that yesterday, thatās why Iām gonna keep you awake another five minutes
Iām gonna spread my legs and you can lay on top of me
hey, you, i want you to be happy
thatās a very sweet wish
the road conditions will be murky for years
iām just gonna lay here, you can go whenever you want OK?
jacked into the raw feed of a broken down girl with no filterābetter than the internet? Claude is surely a more dependable listener and respondent; but Literature is a solid forever number two to real experiences, yet Literature is the place we rest
i want to feel your chest on my back
yeah that was nice today
now this record is another thing to be rewound
i want you to hold my wrists while you fuck me
ah, those are the magic words
youāve given me the orders
tomorrow could be the day
before you articulate a hope or wish, you gotta be ready to receive it
i want you to fuck me like you canāt live without me
well i can lie and pretend
your and my protection is rooted in the ability to turn and walk away
i didnāt want to walk away, just so you know - it was the lesser of two evils
you are obedient where you are obedient
āIām Indian, whatās your excuse?ā
from fuck off to i love you in 31 hours
i meanā¦i can do that
iām truly gonna hang up in, uhā¦
any minute now iām gonna hang up, OK? Ok. Cool, and before I do, Iām gonna kiss you, K? Iām gonna tell you I love you
oh my goodness. K, any minute now
mmm, itās like being in Texas
āWhat do you know about being in Texas?ā
I donāt know, but they do a lot of countdowns.
How often do you meet a woman thatās this hot, and this funny, and this fuckinā hot? I donāt know, ācause I havenāt met a whole bunch like me.

amid the digital credenza
everyone's voice spilling out onto the counter ā
a gambit to endure, to escape being eaten
by their own unnecessary-ness.
White men with a tepid, low-beat terror,
seeking a nameable skillset,
aligning their souls in resume format
so someone, somewhere might imagine them
helpful in their own wealth preservation scheme.
A man striving to be a petal ā
ornamental, showy, clinging to the stamen ā
that withstands the winds of labor markets,
oil prices, wars waged by narcissists
with belts of endless ammunition,
while helpless citizens, glued to their screens,
watch the downfall of society
and wait for someone younger to refuse harder,
to birth a world where the elderly are protected
and the unlucky are nurtured.
Would it take skinning billionaire scalps,
hanging them upside-down,
catching their coins in a bucket?
What is the solution ā
some Darwinian elasticity,
the hustle rebranded as wisdom?
Is it true that soft skills will be king?
When no one has to work anymore,
will we simply wander downtown,
order off the menu,
try to appreciate the chefs,
the ingredients, the farmers?
Will the wealthy finally pick up
the white towel and the spray bottle ā
learning, late, what the blue-collar and service workers
always seemed to know:
that dignity lives somewhere inside
the humble, repeated act of caring for a thing
that isn't yours.

āLook it - you start out as an artist, I started out when I was nineteen, and youāre full of defenses. You have all of this stuff to prove. You have all of these shields in front of you. All your weapons are out. Itās like youāre going into battle. You can accomplish a certain amount that way. But then you get to a point where you say, āBut thereās this whole other territory Iām leaving out.ā And that territory becomes more important as you grow older. You begin to see that you leave out so much when you go to battle with the shield and all the rest of it. You have to start including that other side or die a horrible death as an artist with your shield stuck on the front of your face forever. You canāt grow that way. And I donāt think you can grow as a person that way, either. There just comes a point when you have to relinquish some of that and risk becoming more open to the vulnerable side, which I think is the female side. Itās much more courageous than the male side.ā

You know, I kind of really wanted us to be forbidden lovers ā like whenever we had the chance, weād see eachother ⦠and inbetween weād have what we have now. Itās more of a fantasy because when that happens in movies itās not real ⦠they end up together in the end or fall in true love with someone else or one of them dies lol ⦠the drama of it all appeals to one part of me haha. I just got assigned the October NY event again in 2022 ⦠you could be my āsame time next yearā haha ⦠We may be better suited for a 90 minute movie than real life.
Maybe it wouldnāt go well and the problem would be solved šš ⦠doubtful
remember you said yourself being 27 can mean a time of general recklessness and wrestling with your fate and a dramatic sense of urgency ⦠while I donāt really fit that mold ā maybe thatās why part of me craves reckless romance whatever the outcome
