#Man vs #land: Every #Easter, the “red-centred” guavas harvest in my garden! In January, I also discovered that the fig tree in my garden which I thought was dead is actually alive and bears fruits! Summary of key ideas from “From Paradise to the Promised Land”: l At the outset humans are created in order to enjoy a special relationship with God and to exercise authority on his behalf over the earth. l Man and Land: the creation of earth as God’s temple, and humanity is commissioned to fill the earth. Adam created from adamah (dusts of the ground). l Relationship between man and land disrupted after the fall. l Women punished after the fall with severe pain giving birth, will birth “seed” that will crush the serpent. l Cain as drifting city builder: Cain’s murder of Abel further cursed the ground, and eventually all the earth is so polluted by sin that God decides to wipe out the adamah and the adam by flood! l Salvation and family unit. Nations all came from one family: Noah’s family. l Abraham: no land no “seed”, given a nation (land) and seed (eventually leading to Jesus, the seed that will crush the serpent), becomes a blessing, reversing the curse from the Fall. l Israel as a “kingdom of priests” (Exod 19:5-6). The people have a mediatorial role. “By analogy Israel as a priesthood will perform this role for the nations.” Israel’s election involves responsibility, and obedience to the God who chose Israel. Jerusalem as a temple-city that will become God’s earthly residence. l God’s reign returning on earth: God’s presence shifting from the Tabernacle to the temple to the church and each individual Christian (body as the temple for the Holy Spirit). l Church/body of Christ is like Israelites, the elect people of God, in the desert entering the promised land. The story of Israel serving as an example for the nations. l God’s reign spreading from Garden of Eden to the whole earth as temple of God like God had initially intended in the beginning of Creation!
