Soul's masks symbolizing "masking", so he has alott of them. Basically when you put on a mask for different people or situations. During concord, he rarely wears a mask unless Whole is in social situations where you need/want to pretend. And he also looks like Whole:D. Between concord and cacophony(whether leaving or entering cacophony), thats when the half-shadowed face thing happens. Basically the Whole starts struggling with his identity and stuff, which is personafied through Soul. In cacophony, his face is fully covered by distortion and/or abstract to symbolize the feeling of not knowing who you are and feeling empty inside. He wears a mask more often during cacophony to represent the fact that Whole would pretend he's fine while actively suffering thru depression.
