Possible touch-ups on finished translations. Will be looking over them and determining if anything needs an update, and if so, I will update them. This will mainly just be slight rephrasing, or adjusting manga bubbles for the mangas to make them look nicer. As far as rephrasing, basically, sometimes when translating, a sentence will look like: "when this happens, this follows" in JP, and I translate it with the same structure and forget to readjust it to "this follows when this happens". Usually when this happens it's fine to have it that way, but it would just sound better adjusted. Nothing major will change. I'm not sure when I'll do this.

A friend of mine suggested I write up something about Flynn's emotional state because we were having a discussion about it, but I also found some old official JP material that talks about him and describes him, including his voice actor, Mamoru Miyano, basically saying the exact same things I was saying LOL.
I'd like to maybe talk about it in my own words as well, but my explanation of him is exactly what Mamo-chan was intentionally portraying. I won't say I was not 100% confident in my breakdown of him while talking with my friend (this might make more sense when y'all actually see it if I post it. it's sort of like... I was trying to speak about him more factually based on existing media, sort of thing), but by the time I've written it up here if I do, I can't say I haven't seen official sources that corroborate my explanation of him. That was true when I first discussed it with my friend, but I will also be using official sources if I make a post now too. I'll try describe the post as "this is what I discussed before I saw that, yeah, Mamo-chan literally said the same things I said" to separate what I originally said before seeing the material. Then I'll include official sources additionally.
There's been so much mischaracterization of Flynn over the years (to the point it seems intentional and like people make things up just to hate him...), so I might actually translate some of this stuff. In general I like seeing the VAs and devs talk about my faves, but I definitely think with so much misdirected hatred of Flynn in the fandom, this sort of stuff is good to have on hand.
But anyway yeah, maybe I'll write about Flynn in this regard sometime. Thanks Mamo-chan for being a champ as always.

Mao from Rebirth has a crush on Vesper... Man I know I said Mao and Flynn interacting in RM3 was adorable, but I didn't expect Mao to become his son-in-law...
was looking at my merch and started to get really angry when I thought about how much Flynn has been thrown to the wayside ever since Tomizawa took over the franchise (this has been a problem with Leon, too). so here I am, ready to rant about it and the fact that no, Estelle is not the deuteragonist, she never has been, and she was never treated like she was... until Tomizawa decided men can't be a deuteragonist with the exception of Laphicet because he has no choice on that one.
reminder: a deuteragonist is the second most important character. my problem is that Tomizawa only looks at "hero/heroine" and not "who is actually the second most prominent figure", which is how Tales has gone about using the term "heroine" for a long time now. Vicious and Laphicet are also deuteragonists, "heroines", and Crestoria's writer even confirmed this.

the pre-Flynn stuff that is similar to his case:
to be specific, I would say yes, Rutee is considered canonically the female heroine. however, Leon has been seen as a deuteragonist for a while now because of DC. he's been treated and presented as such... and that's declined a lot since Tomizawa took over. which also just tells me this guy has no idea how to handle a franchise, because what on earth are you doing throwing the franchise's second most popular character to the wayside because you're terrified of two men being the two most important figures in a game?
and before anyone argues about Leon, I'd like to remind y'all that Stahn's motivation in the final arc is largely Leon. Leon remains the main character's central motivator, as well as a primary driving force, much like Sophie even when Sophie was not with Asbel.
then we have Vicious, who not only did the writer say is the heroine alongside Misella, but the evidence to this already existed in the key visual. behind Kanata, the main character, is the rest of the cast lined up. Vicious is directly behind Kanata, in the middle position, whereas Misella is off to the side of him, in the mirrored spot to Aegis. Aegis is definitely not the deuteragonist. Misella may be seen as "the main female" (which isn't hard to do when your main cast only has two females), but her importance as a driving force of the story falls off pretty quickly, replaced by Vicious.
Vicious is the driving force for a lot of things, but he's also an extremely prominent role overall. he's the one who helped Kanata press on when he was ready to give up, and he continues to support Kanata throughout. Misella is extremely important to Kanata on a personal level, but that's similar to Asbel and Cheria. Cheria is not the heroine/deuteragonist. Sophie is, and that's not contested by anyone. Vicious has the singular most impact on the story and its events, but Kanata is the main character who navigates all of that.
Flynn stuff:
Flynn is an active participant of the main story for the full game. he's a prominent figure in all arcs and remains a key driving force during everything. the story is explained even by the devs to be a story about them. Vesperia is Yuri and Flynn's story. that alone should tell you that yes, he's the deuteragonist. he is the second most important character of the story.
why is Estelle not? her relevance in arc 1 is not anywhere near Flynn's relevance. Flynn is still the driving force before you even leave the first city. Estelle is part of a wider political narrative, but one that is being dealt with by Yuri and Flynn. she has a large arc in arc 2, but it's also one that's tied to the main story again - much like Judith's deal with blastia. in arc 3, she falls to the wayside completely, and is barely a footnote worth being noticed or mentioned in the story. once Rita solved her aer issue, her arc was done and the story moved on.
would I say she's the tritagonist? yeah. but she's not the second most important, and she was never marketed as such until Tomizawa walked in evidently terrified of men in that position, and I can hazard a guess as to why.
basically, what made me think about it more was looking at my merch. we used to get matching merch of the protagonist/deuteragonist. it was always Flynn who got that merch. Flynn merch has completely dried up in recent years (with the extremely rare exception of a plushie), and the only reason we got something at all in 2024 is because JP fans literally had to vote for him to get merch for him. he got merch because of a fan vote (and unsurprising, his standee went for a lot of money on the secondhand market. six times the official price, and I'm not even joking).
I'm just saying that as a Flynn fan, and given his popularity in Japan, it's pretty obvious to me that there's a huge disconnect between Tomizawa and what fans actually want, and what he considers to be "the second most important character" (always, always male/female, so fuck anyone who is a fan of the actual deuteragonist, basically). I'm saying actual deuteragonists are completely ignored by him because they're not female, and he apparently doesn't have a flying fucking clue how Tales handles that role - and hint, it's not by gender.
I feel like Tomizawa is basically trying to shoehorn in "male/female only" and erase previous "canon". I mean obviously he can't erase what already exists in the created material, but that's part of my problem: he's completely ignoring it and pushing this idea that Estelle (in a way where I can tell, 100%, that he would treat Misella as more narratively important than Vicious, which is just objectively not true in any capacity) is the second most prominent figure in the game.
all the 30th anniversary artwork we've been seeing... never includes Flynn. he's not at all celebrated by the franchise's anniversary, and a massive milestone year at that, despite his role and popularity. why? because he doesn't fit the mold of "has to be male/female", and again: I'm sure y'all can figure out why two men as the leading story narrative is Oh No Scawy. even though, you know, Vesperia has been repeatedly expressed as Yuri and Flynn's story. it's nothing new.
and here's the thing: the first female to show up... is not the deuteragonist or heroine. Alisha proved that (marketing aside, because we're not even gonna get into that failure on Bamco's marketing of her compared to her role in the story). but as we know, Tomizawa hates Zestiria, so of course he's not using it as a prime example that the first female to show up does not equal heroine/deuteragonist. Rose, like Flynn, shows up later in the story (yes, you get a sort of "cameo" of Rose early on, but she doesn't join you until a little bit in).
and yes, Alisha is my favorite Zestiria character, so nobody can try to pull the "you're just saying this because of your faves!". nah. Alisha ain't the heroine. being a fave of mine doesn't mean they need to be in a prominent role. I accept when they're not. but there are undertones to Tomizawa's handling of the francise that are exremely uncomfortable, too.
and yes, if the two leads were female, I would want that to be respected, too. we've never had a main female with a female secondary role, but if it existed, I would not want Tomizawa pushing in the next most important male to make it male/female, like he's been doing... which is not something this franchise used to do. Flynn was always marketed as the deuteragonist. because he is.
yes, I realize most of the time it's been a female character. but that, imo, makes it worse that when it's actually a male, Tomizawa is out here fighting for life to pretend Flynn doesn't exist. Leon at least gets... some stuff, because I think someone at Bamco must be pushing for him to get stuff given his popularity. I don't trust that it's Tomizawa for a second, bc he's proven himself to be incompetent as a franchise producer, but also extremely bias and hateful toward Tales.
and to be clear, my issue is not with male/female or female/male specifically. it's the fact that it's the rule Tomizawa goes by, which typically leaves Flynn and Leon completely ignored except in very rare cases (and even if you argued Leon isn't in that role, Flynn is proper). problem is, that's not "the rule" for Tales. it's just that he doesn't care about Tales or properly celebrating it/its characters.
so let's see who the deuteragonists (secondary in importance and driving forces) are then:

Mileena (although she and Ix switch this role for arc 2)
Vicious ( + Misella, but her actual role in the story... does not strike me as equal to Vicious, if I'm being honest)
so... not really unheard of. and there are characters I hate/strongly dislike in there, but I know if they're the deuteragonist and won't deny that.
unfortunately, Tomizawa won't do the same.

it's just really annoying for me to see how you'd never know Flynn was in that role from how Tales is being "celebrated" (which is just new artwork of a guy and a girl from each game, fuck every other character I guess). like a newbie to the franchise would have no idea. for years before Tomizawa, Flynn was undisputed in his role via official channels/stuff released by Bamco. now you'd never even guess if you were new.
also, given that Flynn's voice actor is absolutely famous, you'd think they would wanna capitalize off that... but again, Tomizawa is actually just that incompetent and seems really bias to me. but not surprising coming from the guy who drove this franchise into the absolutely mud and does not give a fuck that he did... if it wasn't on purpose.
...also, I rly just want smth of Flynn to pop up right now so I can be like 2 percent less frustrated. or like, anything with him as the second lead. official art. something.

Half/partial circles mean I either didn't complete it, or I skipped around and know portions of it (via video), but have yet to sit through everything. I've looked things up for the original Destiny, but haven't sat down with it properly. I plan to play Eternia when the remaster comes out. Tempest is up in the air. I've tried Berseria, but unless I can get past my disgust with Velvet, I don't foresee it going smoothly if it does go (don't message me about "she gets better", I've heard it all, including how late game it is).
I don't really have a definite, determined order for my faves of anything except the top spot, being Legendia for game, Moses for character, and Fluri for ship.
Fun fact, I don't remember how long it took anything to be my favorite of anything except Vicious. He was my favorite within minutes, maybe seconds and never lost his spot, and ended up climbing the ranks to being a whole franchise fave. Good for him!
Back again with another Fluri doujin translation! This time, Another Strike.
As a heads up, there is mildly graphic sexual content, but the majority of the doujin focuses on story and on the emotional aspect of their relationship and sexual relationship. There's no hardcore smut in this, but it also doesn't entirely avoid some lightly graphic panels. If that's not your thing, you may want to pass on this one!
Apparently there were seven unused skits in 360 Vesp, and only one of them ended up in the PS3 version (and so also DE, the happy birthday one for Yuri). Two of the other six have English text present, and the other four are JP only. All seven were removed from the game for the English release (the scripts were taken out entirely, so I guess they were scrapped before they put the game data on the English disc?).
(note: this is from the JP iso, so I don't know how the English is handled in this situation, in relation to the official loc. like with the strings I found for Flynn, there were some in English, but not everything was. so I'm not really sure why there are some odd English things popping up in the JP iso. maybe they had plans to do rough translations on the JP side for the official English release and it just didn't pan out? who knows... well... the dev team does but--)
I didn't find most of them particularly interesting, but one of them covers the fact that Leblanc and co saved Raven's life (which I think in the final game in both versions was only implied or something? I haven't played in a hot minute so I don't remember if that was explicitly covered) and makes a point to have Rita express a lot of concern for him.
One of the others seems to imply some kind of like... New Game Plus+ vibe, like the characters seem to remember fighting with each other even though they haven't before or something? That's just how I'm interpreting the context of the skit, but it feels like that's what it's getting at.
I might be interested in tling these at some point, but it's nothing groundbreaking. Might be some fun tidbits for fans of any particular thing, but it doesn't contain any unexpected information or anything.

I was going through the game files for Vesperia 360, using the JP iso
only to find
"If Flynn in on standby, he will cheer from outside
the battlefield, boosting the Over Limit gauge."
(note: I'm aware of the typo here, but this is what's directly in the JP string files. there are oddly some English strings in there, sometimes with incorrect grammar or typos like this. I couldn't tell you what they were doing with these, if they were some sort of early English translation or what have you, especially since some of those English strings made it into the localization later, but this string is in English.)
I'm telling you there was a plan in 360's development to have Flynn cheering for you outside the battle ring.
I'm telling you Cheerleader Flynn was almost actually canon. we almost actually had it all.
also yes, I can confirm this string was entirely removed from the DE version (so almost definitely PS3, as well). it's apparently, then, a scrapped mechanic from the 360 version that was scrapped with Flynn's playability status (standby almost definitely meaning not in the active battle party. I'm pretty certain based on the string text that this was a skill, since it's sitting with some other skill information).

I realize most of my followers don't know Innocence, but if you're interested in some fun content for Yuri and Flynn, the Twin Brave Innocence demo is now available to play fully in English (not to be confused with the other demo that does not feature any exclusive content).
For anyone who just happens to stumble upon this, this is a Tales musou game's demo, featuring Ruca and Spada as playable characters to celebrate Innocence R's release. Spada's story is from the main game's serious scenario, and Ruca is given an exclusive comical scenario for the demo, featuring Yuri and Flynn.
More details are here. You will need PSP hardware or PPSSPP to play this game.
I don't have any screenshots of Yuri and Flynn's dialogue on hand, because it's one of those things where I've worked on Twin Brave so much that I have no drive to play it right now lol. If you want to see the boys in the demo, you'll have to play through it!
If you plan on playing the main game when it's ready, playing this demo might give you a handle on the game's functionality before the main game is out. I can't give a date for the main game's release, as I'm still working on the translation for it and other team members have their areas of work that are still in progress, but it's pretty far in and we'll continue working on it until it's complete. :)

TL Note: There's a part where Tsubasa explains that he thinks he's "impolite". Kana uses "kinda like" to express what he's saying. The word he uses here basically means things such as "I mean" / "How should I put it" / "Or rather", etc, but those aren't phrases that really have a "casual" form in English, so it's written this way with the emphasis on "kinda", to retain the meaning behind what Tsubasa is explaining.
Essentially, Tsubasa is expressing how he sometimes speaks too casually, which can be seen as impolite in Japanese society, depending on the situation it's used in (i.e. it would be acceptable in a close group of friends if everyone was comfortable with it, but not necessarily in a work environment. I say "necessarily" here because while it's a general rule of thumb, these people are technically Tsubasa's co-workers and they don't find him impolite). Tsubasa's concern is basically that he isn't polite/formal enough, and recognizes he's more prone to speaking casually/informally than using the "proper" version of words, and that this makes him impolite.
