Do YOU need character designs for your overly soapy comic concepts? Do YOU want to undercut your drama plotlines with inherently hilarious design choices? Do YOU think Pokemon gijinkas deserve the chance to be played with like a weird little girl's barbie dolls?
Then, boy, do I have a concept for you!!!!
If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention latelyâŚ
Because it was trained on pirated workâincluding freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)âChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.
Including (sigh) the em dash.
There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve đŤ ), but the appropriation of the em dashâa punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhereâfeels especially personal.
A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuseâthe greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freakâs lexicon, franklyâare suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.
No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted asideâor the just-one-more clarification the sentence demandsâor the dramatic pause your comma could neverâetc.
You donât write like AIâAI writes like you.
Defend the em dash.
(Feel free to download/share/stick it where it matters!)
I've had her for like a year (nine months) but here she finally is!!! The second ever red Holiday Barbie... and also the sixth ever Holiday Barbie which really says something about our recent year Barbies... (bombastic side eye)
writing is a fantastic hobby but the kicker is it's a lot harder to show your friends as it's progressing. with a sketch i can show someone and they'll be like oh that's an apple. you can't do that with words until you get a lot of them down. so i'll just be like damn fuckin. uhh. check this out
that's right. and that's just one of the several words i know

Good news, I watched Masters of the Universe and I loved it and everybody should watch it
Bad news, I'm about to become soooo insufferable about hunting down He-Man shows to watch just so I can get inspiration because holy shit that movie was so up my alley for fantasy bullshit
"I'm having fun."
"Why are you face first in the table then?"
"Fun isn't having me."
"....explain?"
"I swear once I get flowing it'll be fun, but the words won't come out on the page."
"Oh."
"Why is writing so hard?"
"Because you care about it, I think."
Transplant Your Darlings: That bit is important to the story, it's just in the wrong place.
I have a document in every single book folder on my laptop for this. Keep it, just in case.
how to write endings that donât let readers sleep
⌠killing everyone is lazy. corpses are boring. the real cruelty is survivalâbut the kind of survival where the character will never sleep right again. give them trauma, paranoia, scars that donât heal. itâs way worse than a clean death.
⌠horror endings should feel unfinished. neat bows are for romance novels. if your reader closes the book thinking âoh good, itâs over,â youâve failed. the best endings itch. they should feel like thereâs still something lurking just off the page.
⌠leave something unresolved. donât describe the monsterâs bodyâdescribe the mug it left behind. the voicemail still playing. the dog still waiting at the door. absence is scarier than closure.
⌠the last line is everything. it should feel like a splinter under the skin. short, sharp, unforgettable.
examples:
âshe turned off the light. something else turned it back on.â
âthe baby monitor crackled: donât forget to feed me.â
âhis reflection waved first.â
âshe tucked herself into bed. then felt the blanket tuck tighter from the other side.â
⌠horror doesnât end when the book closes. horror ends when the reader stops thinking about it⌠which should be never. the goal is for them to set your story down, turn off the lights, and then immediately turn them back on again because something in the silence feels too heavy.
Someone asked if writing is lonely and i had to think about it for a really long time. technically yes. you are alone in a room with made-up people and a document and a coffee that went cold an hour ago. but also there are like six characters in there with you and they all have opinions and one of them is being difficult and you're negotiating with someone who doesn't exist about a plot point that affects no one. lonely is not the word i would use. crowded, actually. it is very crowded in here.

We write for ourselves, but we post for others.
(this came out of a conversation in the comments on a previous post about an author threatening to stop updating a fic because of lack of engagement)
So thereâs this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,
and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing
but i also think:
âi write for myself, but i post for others.â
because posting fic is not only self-expression. itâs social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.
people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,
and i donât think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. thereâs something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:
âok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.â
especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,
and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.
And i think thatâs why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,
and then itâs like,
does anyone see me? does anyone even care?
THIS.
Itâs particularly frustrating when you find something nice someone wrote about your fic on a completely different place and that same user name just put a kudo and didnât write that same nice thing in the comment box on the fic. You found that nice thing entirely by accident.
Or when a popular author you used to admire tells you oh yes, they know your work. In fact they discussed it on a private discord with other authors in your fandom that you used to admire. Yeah, they all thought it was great! Except none of them could be bothered to tell you that, you had no idea they knew you wrote, never mind read your stuff!
Oh and the person telling you this only left a guest kudo, they could not possibly leave one with their actual name on it. That person told you this while also talking about all the cool art, podfic and even a bookbind they got from readers, so they know how awesome that feels but they canât even tell you they liked your fic. They canât even just click a button with their own name attached to it.
Those are things that happened to me.
I really wish that person had kept their âoh Iâm one of your guest kudosâ to themselves, because that absolutely destroyed my desire to write for months.
Do I still write for myself? I do, and I absolutely do not see why I should bother sharing it, since clearly the very people going on about how important community is donât actually want to foster it beyond their own work.
Superhero noticing that all the supervillains keep shouting her friend's codename when they attack her city, and she's just so confused because actually he protects the neighboring city, they meet up for drinks sometimes when they're free but she actually can't think of the last time he was here AS a superhero????
Superhero pausing when they're complaining about minor interruptions during patrol hours and realizing she gets pulled aside for civilians and asked for pictures wayyyy more often than he does, and people are always rude when she says "sorry, I have a criminal I have to go aprehend".
Superhero wondering where all her merch is when her and her friend go out together only to find that okay so she does HAVE merch but it's all color graded into pastels or fashion dolls even though her color scheme is bold and bright and she really didn't think her costume was so doll-ableâis that doll wearing a SKIRT? They know she fights crime MIDAIR, right? In PANTS??
Superhero getting really upset actually because what do you MEAN her friend has an evil clone made by HER NEMESIS? Where's HER evil clone? It's HER NEMESIS!!!!
