it’s crazy bc even with what renji is telling ichigo as he mourns rukia’s condemnation to death, he still does not seem to know how complex rukia’s role in the kuchiki family is which is really sad

but like he’s not part of the family! he’s a vassal if anything!

and tbh at first he vents his frustration at ichigo bc ichigo is the catalyst of all this but it comes all back down to the fact that renji has never been in a position where he can protect rukia despite all his efforts, the same way he was powerless when they were younger in the rukongai district

and now you have to depend on a stranger, solely bc he exists outside of this system you’re chained to

#no this gets me so bad #because there was so much he did not understand regarding what was really going on and the limitations of his influence #and the very nature of the position he ended up in as byakuya's lieutenant #by sheer strength renji wanted to protect her but he ultimately ended up directly reporting to one of very few people #who had legitimate influence over rukia's fate
