Gale’s body always feels like touching a kettle on a stove, hot and strong and unbreakable.  Even in his half sleep state and his dizzy mind, he snaps out of it and smirks, always steady and smooth like the liquor at the hob.  Katniss can’t help the way she grins, dropping her gaze to shake her head.  

“You’re impossible,”  she whispers after a small laugh, impossibly bitter that they’re stuck in here and not in the woods, where the world seemed to fall away leaving them to enjoy the little things.  But soon her family and his would be inside the house for dinner during the commission of the games, and tomorrow maybe they can sneak behind that fence.  The woods wasn’t a job or something to do, no.  It was where friendships were glossed over.  The slight twitch of his fingers in her hand bring her back, removing her hand and putting it to work to cover up her instability and thought process.  

“How’re you feeling?”  

“I think it might be fatal,” he had to joke. They both knew he’d be fine, of course, simply because he never wasn’t. There were too many people counting on him, on both of them, for anything about the way they were making due to change. Illegal hunting, and trading their extra game on the black market, had been working for them for years, and it would continue to work for the foreseeable future. It was just a cold, one that would go away within the next few days. And just like always, he’d be fine.

They knew how risky this expedition was, but that hadn’t stopped Gale from volunteering. If they missed this chance, there was a good probability they wouldn’t get a better one any time soon. The Victors had already been in the Capitol for long enough, and seeing the state Peeta was in during his televised interviews with Caesar Flickerman was proof enough that Snow hadn’t exactly welcomed them with open arms. So when they higher-ups in Thirteen told them what they were planning, and asked for soldiers willing to go on the rescue mission... Gale didn’t hesitate to raise his hand, knowing how imporant this was.

“Good- I’m glad. It’ll take a lot of the pressure off.”

She finished the wrapping, going into her drawers to get out what she would need to wrap up the hand. All those on the counter, she unlocked a drawer that she kept medicine in. She got out a few pain relievers, and a cup of water. Then she brought it all back over to him.

 “Take these, then I’ll wrap up   those fingers.”

Gale thanked her before taking the medicine, swallowing the pills and then downing them with a sip of the water. He might’ve protested if they’d been the heavy stuff; he wasn’t hurt enough to warrant putting up with how out of it they made him feel. He could only remember taking anything heavier than a sleep syrup a handful of times before, the whipping the most recent of them.
