“You’re right about that, but I know how to take care of myself when I can’t get it elsewhere, if you need lessons, let me know.” Marlene teased, playfully winking at their friend, more than amused by the crimson color on their friends’ cheeks. “Good, he better, I already have enough of an ear to give him when he returns, don’t need to toss that on top.” Marlene mused, gulping down the wine in nearly one slurp. “ I don’t have a choice, if I don’t, who knows what’ll happen. If I wasn’t strong, I’d be my mother and that’s almost worse than being one of the men in my family.” They grimaced, the thought alone enough to cause their skin to crawl. “Nothing has, he’s strong, he can take care of himself. For all we know, he ran off first and Sirius will follow shortly after once the getaway is set up.” 

“Then we should better get started with this, shall we?” She proposed with a grin, accio-ing two glasses from the kitchen. “You don’t have to worry about him. He’s out with friends, or soemthing. I don’t think he’ll be back until tomorrow.” She replied with a shrug, although even if he came back, that wouldn’t stop her from drinking. “I’ve been doing alright I guess, though I’ve been better. How are you holding up? With James, I mean.”

“We should,” Lily wiggled the bottle, before uncorking it -- pouring out two glasses. Setting the bottle down on the side, she took one for herself, before handing the other glass to Hestia. “Rowle has friends? I’m shocked and surprised. Seems like he barely communicates sometimes.” Lily rolled her eyes before frowning at her glass. “Honestly? Awful. I’ve not been sleeping as much, I’m constantly trying to find any lead possible or trying to invent a potion that’ll magically find him.”

Her hands were buried deep inside of the pockets of her robes, it was still cold for this time of spring, but perhaps that was just the atmosphere of a looming war lately. She made her way through the cobblestoned alleys, eyes pinned on the floor, unable to bare a look at the numerous posters of James Potter that were staring at her.

From a distance, she spotted Lily in front of one of the posters and Mary’s heart fell. She had been through so much, this was not the same girl she had grown up at Hogwarts with. Once burning so fiercely, now barely a flicker, ready to extinguish. She shook her head, trying to rid her mind of worry — but how do you stay strong for someone who may have lost the love of her life?

“Hey—” Mary greeted, walking up to the red-head, she consolingly touched Lily’s arm, letting her hand linger for a bit. Not sure of a different way to share her friend’s pain. “We’re not giving up, Evans. We will find him.”

Lily sighed softly, before turning around to hug her friend, burying her face in her shoulder. “I know we’re not giving up, but with the amount of people disappearing--” Tearing herself away from her friend, Lily shook her head, unable to finish her words. “It’s not even me that I’m worried about. I’m worried about Peter, Remus and Sirius. Sirius especially. I don’t know how they’ll react if- if we can’t. I know we won’t give up hope but part of me feels like I should start preparing for the worst, in the hopes it will hurt less.”

Sirius had been dropping by James’s apartment every night, almost hoping the man would miraculously just show up at his place and tell them it was a prank. That he was just testing the limits of their sanity, and then Sirius would dunk that man into a vat of ice for this. Besides, someone needed to make sure the bed was still made and there was nothing rotting in the kitchen. He had sensed someone else in the apartment, before he could use Revelio or even hex the intruder, she revealed herself to the one and only; “Lils…” He kept the wand down, shaking his head. “Long time no see, Red. I actually…ignore the wand, it’s been a rough day.” 

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” Lily murmured, pulling off the blanket, setting the photo aside and standing to her feet. “Sorry I haven’t been around, I’ve been meaning to find you but I just, I honestly don’t know what to say.” Swallowing, the girl chewed on her bottom lip, before rushing forwards to hug him. “I can’t imagine how you’re feeling. You’re far closer to him than I probably ever will be.”

“ I mean, for once in my life I look better than Sirius Black, and if that’s not a silver lining in all this, maybe one doesn’t exist.” Peter attempted to joke, fingers fidgeting with the battered guitar strap, struggling to find the inspiration to play since James’ disappearance. “Not that that’s of any importance, truthfully.” He grimaced at his own stupidity, what a daft thing of him to say. “Sorry. I just, it’s been rough, if I’m honest. How are you, though?” 

Hestia had a feeling it would be Lily at the door. There really weren’t that many people who took the time to visit her anymore. And for a moment, she tried, she really did try to look annoyed upon seeing her friend on the other side of the door, but she instantly shifted into a smile when she saw the firewhiskey. “When do I say no to firewhiskey, tell me?” She simply replied, closing the door behind them before following behind Lily.

“You can’t, that’s why I brought it,” A slight forced laugh escaped her lips as she glanced around Hestia’s place. “The other half around? Or is he sulking in a corner somewhere?” Lily arched an eyebrow, searching for two glasses. “How are you doing, I feel like I’ve not been able to check up on you recently, I’m sorry.”

The previous night had been rough, and Alastor was still trying to recover from a horrible headache. Potions helped relieve some of the pain, but it wasn’t entirely gone. At least, it gave him some clarity he didn’t have that often. Possibly the reason why he approached Lily in a more gentle way than he usually would’ve. “Lily, how are you doing lately?”

Lily frowned at the potion she was working on, the colour not quite right. Hearing a voice, Lily’s head snapped up, a soft, sad smile gracing her lips. “Hey, Al, I’m fi- ah, screw it, I’m not gonna lie to you. I’m barely sleeping and I feel like crap.” A sigh escaping her lip, Lily flopped down onto a nearby chair, patting the spot next to her. “I’ll survive though. How are you?”

“Well fuck, Lils, it was a legit question, sex is important for our young selves, keeps us healthy and alive, or maybe that’s just my untouched vagina talking.” Marlene’s smirk grew as they leaned in closer to Lily, “You could’ve fooled me, I see the way he makes you all hot and bothered, but then who knows if he knows how to use what he’s got. I didn’t mean for him, I meant for you, unfortunately, despite how dumb he is, I don’t think he’d fall for that, but if you looked like me,” Marlene shrugged. “Though I would never put you through that hell, even if you did say yes.” The brunette insisted, pouring a generous amount in each of their glasses. Marlene’s smirk faded instantly at the sentiment. “Now we both know that’s not true, he adores you too much for that. If Sirius wasn’t around, I’d say, maybe the two of them ran off together because that is far more likely, but another woman, no. If he did, I’ll kill him.”
