So since we're sharing sunday commentary...

I have several muses who speak the common tongue (whatever the default may be in their canonical worlds), but they also have a native tongue in some other fancy language.

Atem has his ye olde Coptic / Ancient Egyptian.

Thranduil has his glorious Sindarin / Elvish tongue.

The silver haired dragon people: Aegon I, Daemon, Rhaenyra, Baela and Daenerys Targaryen all have High Valyrian. Dany also has Dothraki though she'll often default to High Valyrian.

Charles is fluent in whatever language he wants due to his telepathic abilities that allows him to learn languages very quickly, but he is particularly favorable to French and German for reasons he claims are unknown.

Loki has his Asgardian. (And hearing him sing it is chef's kiss)

Alucard speaks a few languages from home studies and just living among certain people for years.

Yelena has her Russian. God I love her Russian.

Anyway, all this to say if you hear them whispering words in their native tongue during a make-out / intimate moment, you are doing absolutely everything right.

Thranduil and Atem are the worst offenders when it comes to switching languages. One of them might even start glowing because...magic. But usually only when he's really pent up and stressed and its been a looooooong time since he's been touched / touched anyone OR if he hasn't fought. He'll go for months without in the Egypt verse cos he's either single or so damn busy. Thranduil's just...stubborn. And by default hasn't gotten laid in centuries so there ya go.

when that movie comes out a year from now i am going to be beside myself. i am not going to stfu about thranduil and i am apologizing a year in advance. i have been baited with his beautiful face and i will be sat next december. because i am weak.

Bleh. I've got some errands to run today but before I go, I saw some discourse on a YT video that had me twirling my imaginary villain mustache.

Okay so. I love me some ATLA. I've probably written at least all of the gang at some point and that includes Zuko. That said, someone mentioned that ghastly Netflix adaptation and how it appears they're leaning towards Zuta.ra as endgame.

Let me be perfectly clear. I have no issue with people shipping outside of canon. Lord knows I'm still salty at Naruto for baiting us with Naruto x Gaara only for him to keep crying over Sasuke and not get him either. Though I do like Hinata. I really do think she was ride or die for him since they were kids so I'm not mad. But I digress.

Netflix's Avat.ar is... not good man. It's just not good (if you enjoy it then that's great! I just...don't.) From a writing standpoint, the show is all over the place. They go from trying to mirror some of the original episodes frame for frame to leaving out whole other episodes. I also think the only character who consistently feels like himself is Sokka. The other characters are not as consistent in terms of their characterizations. So that said, my issue with Zuta.ra, aside from bad writing on Netflix's part, is what will they do with Mei? Because one of her defining moments on the OG show is when she finally tells Azula that she loves Zuko more than she fears her. THAT is a pivotal moment for her character. I could see Netflix kind of pushing her to the side eventually. Having Zuko and Katara team up to fight Azula then get together. I mean sure. Go off. But then that leaves Mei out to pasture which would be pretty sad. If they go that route, I'd hope they'd have some sort of consolation / reasoning so it doesn't come off as unrequited when we both know Zuko cared about her too.

I just think that while we all enjoy fanfic ships, using them in remakes / adaptations muddles the plot. Because with good writing, things were put in place that made the endgame ships make sense. There's always some exceptions, but for the most part, ATLA did a lot of things that we all could live with as fans. Might not be what some of us wanted, but it wrapped everything up tidy enough that there's no hardcore vitriol either way. The Vampire Diaries had a questionable finale when they veered away from book canon. Bamon was endgame but on the show, the fans aggressively harassed writers to get their precious Delena. Not cool. The natural buildup of enemies to friends to lovers was RIGHT THERE, especially since Nina left the show. And don't get me started on Klaus, Stefan and Caroline.

Anyway, just my two cents. I've always felt ATLA didn't really need endgame ships. They were all kids / teens trying to figure shit out. Hell Katara looked at Jet, Zuko and Aang before she acknowledged Aang's feelings. To me, their relationship morphed from mom figure, older sister, best friend and then finally a couple. Aang's character went from playful child, guilt ridden, lost little boy. And by the time he fights the firelord, he has a maturity about him of someone who as finally resigned himself to being the avatar. He and Zuko had to reckon with a lot within themselves so i also enjoy stories that put them together too. In the grand scheme of things though, i doubt the fire nation changes its ways over night, even with Zuko as firelord. I imagine the tensions between communities took years to reconcile and we see in Korra just how fragile some relations still are. But anyway, yeah.

While I realize most of the characters were butchered between seasons 6 and 8, it still doesn't change the fact that Jon Snow pulled a dick move all because Tyrion Lannister let Varys convince him that Daenerys was a 'mad' queen.

And here's the thing. As we're watching them adapt House of the Dragon, you can clearly see that there's very few 'mad' Targaryens although I suppose that depends on what you conclude constitutes as 'mad'. Helaena is probably the one most would point to off rip. Helaena, who is clearly someone who has 'the sight', acts odd by most accounts. It makes her a little different --- odd in comparison to her other kin --- by no means is she mad. I imagine if I had random visions of death all the time, it would make me a little off putting to others as well. No one can relate to Helaena because they can't grasp where she's coming from. But being a little eccentric does not mean mad. She's very kind, smart but is often overlooked. She's always been treated badly by her family so as she's gotten older, some of her behavior can be attributed to how she was raised.

Now let's look at Viserys I, the father of Rhaenerya / Heleana. One could argue he was a bit 'mad' if you count the fact that he spent hours alone putting together his version of legos and obsessing over the prophesy of the Prince Who was Promised instead of keeping a watchful eye on Otto Hightower. Viserys was kind to his constituents and on the surface wanted what's best for his family and kingdom, but Viserys was the reason all this mess started in the first place. By remarrying and making babies with Alicent, he further pushed Rhaenerya down the ladder whether he intended to or not. He named Rhaenyra his heir but he knew full well a woman had never sat the throne. Viserys was dying and people fought him over the decision while he was alive. He remarried and made MALE babies with Alicent. A man with half a brain should have known once he was out of the way, the council was going to overlook his wishes. He was dead. Not much he could do from the grave, especially if Alicent was still Queen Reagent.

Daemon KNEW this. He had the reputation for being the chaotic Rogue Prince, but Daemon was the younger brother. There may have been a time when he longed to be king, but I think it's more so because he thought his brother was incompetent / too soft. Daemon, while a menace, still looked after his brother, even when Viserys pushed him away. He knew Rhaenerya was always sweet on him but he stayed away from her until she was marrying age. He begged to be wed to her. Viserys assumed it was a prey on his daughter but in reality, I think Daemon knew everyone was less likely to rise against her as queen if they knew he was at her side as king --- a MAN. And one with a reputation of killing and with the loyalty of the gold cloaks. Daemon was out of control at times and one might argue he had a touch of madness, but incest breeds all kinds of issues and that family was nothing but peak incestual genes. Still hard to pin Daemon as truly mad. He's calms down when he needs to. His achilleas heel is always acting out of passion rather than thinking things through.

Meanwhile, Viserys I rotted away in his lego room spilling words about the prophesy and the illusion of controlling dragons. People all around him were making moves and manipulating him including his own wife.

So I say all of this to say, Daenerys being mad is such a weak narrative no matter what D&D said. The showrunners claim they sprinkled hints throughout the series, but let's examine what happened. Season 1, Dany is forced to marry Khal Drogo who grapes her every night. It's not until she learns how to deal and please him that it gets better. The show romanticizes the ship (and ill ship it on the blog), but she literally had no choice in the matter. He took her every night, saddle sores and all. Viserys, her older brother, abused her long before she married the khal. When he tries to do it post marriage, she realizes he has no authority over her anymore. Her Bloodriders threaten Viserys and when he starts making too many demands, Drogo pours a hot crown over his head and he dies. Daenerys looks on with seemingly no remorse. But lets be real: would YOU mourn your abuser?

Season 4ish? I think she sacks Astapor and Yunkai. She burns a slave city to the ground but only orders the killing of the masters. Once Daario helps her take Meereen, she elects to pull a Vlad the Impaler with her 'answering justice with justice'. Barristan tries to talk her into serving sentences of mercy, but she burns the lot of criminals with her Dragons and calls it justice. Now I ask you: what's the difference between executing criminals with a sword (a la Ned Stark) and a dragon? Are we not still taking lives? The other thing she does is leave Doreah in a safe after finding out she was sleeping with a man that lied to her about having riches. This never happens in the book. The most common thing she does that's often pointed out by her antis is the thing that happened with the Tarleys. So here's my take on it:

When Daenerys arrives to Westeros on Dragonstone island, her next step was to go straight to Kings Landing and meet Cersei head on. Had she done that, boom. War is over. BUT she elected to do things the Westeros way by allowing all the men around her who were supposed experts, tell her what to do. "Send Ravens". "Try to get in good with some of the noble houses". Jorah had no say in the matter because he was exiled by Robert. Then deflected to her side. Barristan was killed out of the picture even though he's alive in the books. I guarantee you Barristan would have given her better advice. He was way over The Lannisters and their shit after being humiliated by Joffrey so he would have likely told Daenerys the Tarleys need to live, but taking King's Landing should be priority. Olena Tyrell even told her to stop listening to the men and go be a dragon. Take the fucking city and declare yourself queen. Who was going to stop her???

Tyrion as her hand sounded good on paper, but Tyrion is still a Lannister. His feelings towards his family was complicated. I doubt he wanted anything to happen to Jaime while Cersei was probably up in the air. He knew Jaime loved their sister so I have to wonder if he would have seriously advised Dany to do anything that would put Jaime in harm's way. Dany had ALL the momentum and it all fell apart. She lost her whole squad. Jorah. Jon, her LOVER, betrayed her. Ollena was poisoned. And Missandei executed in real time before her very eyes. Dany wasn't mad. She was ANGRY. And men love to say women acting out violently isn't justified when we see people on HOTD do the very same things.

I don't think it was wrong for Dany to feel some type of way when it was revealed that Jon might be the true heir to the crown. This woman spent her whole life making moves to get to the chair. She endured grape, lost a child, endured countless other losses, setbacks, betrayals only to have "good" MEN snatch it away again. And on top of that, JON DIDN'T EVEN WANT THE CROWN yet he somehow got dragged into it anyway. If Jon actually loved Dany, it should have been a no brainer to suggest they simply marry. She still gets to be queen and he'd appease everyone as the new king. Done deal. Instead, we get them arguing and people making him feel like she only cares about power. Dany had no one. Once she realized she was alone in the world, that's when she began to unravel. She had no one to lean on. No support system. On top of that, she lost two dragons putting her goals on hold to help a man she laid with that betrayed her in the end.

Meanwhile, we got to see Daemon and Rhaenyra be dragons in the past. Like Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys. They rode up on their dragons, kicked down the doors and took the chair. I mean thats what dragons do?? I just... idk. I think GRRM coined the whole Targaryen madness thing but when you study some of these characters more closely, you realize they got mommy issues (Aemond and Aegon), brother issues (Daemon). abuse issues (Helaena / Daenerys). Trauma changes people. Daenerys has so much trauma. Graped. Smothered her husband in his sleep. Lost a child. Wandered a desert and lost half her khalasar. Avoided assassins. Betrayed by Jorah. Anyway---

Sorry for the epically long rant but I will never not be angry about this. She deserved better. And even though I know how things will end with HOTD it was still nice seeing this couple... seeing Daemon kill the way for his wife to sit on HER throne for however long it lasts
