Chapter 18: No Cycle Exists in Isolation

Has spring come already? The wind has stopped The moment I raised my head Oh, you were there.  You trust me more than I trust myself.  That is so you.  The beauty of this world is there for those who seek it.  Your eyes saw me clearly in the face of my darkness. I promise, I won’t leave this place either. What if I ask you to be my light?

Vi’s feet seemed glued to the tiles as she watched Caitlyn Kiramman finish the last of the notes with deft, slender fingers. She felt the fluttering of her heart and the heat on her face. Cait was wearing one of her white shirts and mile-long pants. Her blindfold was purple, her hair loose about her shoulders, and she was humming even after the song had ended.

“Father?” Cait asked, fingers flying across the keyboard to a childish, funny tune.  

“Vi.”

She stopped. “Vi?”

Cait stood up and made to grab her cane. Step by step, they came to meet in between.

She reached up a hand, seeking Vi’s face. She held Cait’s fingers gently and pressed them onto her cheeks. “It’s me.”

Quick as that, a faint pink rose to Cait’s own face. “How?”

“Your dad,” Vi told her. “And, yes.”

Cait squinted at her. “Yes?”

“I said that I would steal the light for you. You just asked if I could be your light, and I agreed.”

She loved seeing the way Caitlyn Kiramman flustered at her words.

“Who said that I was singing to you?”

“So, you were not?” Vi reached up a hand and ran her thumb across Cait’s lips. “I guess it’s my fault for assuming—or no?”

“Vlonqo Flower? That’s wild. How did they get them here?” Cait insisted on pulling the cart with Vi. So, it’s Vi’s fingers around Cait’s as they went about, clearing the vendors as they passed. “Scaling those cliffs just to get some of these blossoms. I wonder if it’s costing us an arm and a leg. Planning to pay for those, Cupcake?” “No. There’s a reason they are endemic. We cannot make it take root, I’m afraid.” “Most of the ones in our cart are going to wilt within half a month. We can get it still. I’ve met a Weh’le tattoo artist once, he told me that we could mix this with some berries to make ink.” “Raikkon berries. I have them right here, friends. See that you’re inked. Want to get a few more?” offered the merchant. The man was a head shorter than Vi. Stubble covered his jaws and the hollows of his cheeks. His skin was seared crisp from all the travelling that he had done. "Just wait. it's at the back of the cart."  "Do you have no man to help you out?" Vi asked, rubbing a petal gently as the man scurry to go through the boxes in his cart, giving his horse a small, fresh apple. “No, girl,” said the man, returning with two wooden boxes, intricately carved. “Do you have the dried one?” Vi asked while Cait was shifting her focus from one plant to the next, and to other goods the man had brought to sell or trade. “Clever. Apparently, that’s what I am showing you,” he said, unlocking the first chest—filled with dried, flattened petals—and another that held dark, withered berries. “I cannot find a Weh’le around here, though, but I can learn, but it’s much,” Vi said nonchalantly, making sure the man perceive her as uninterested, ready to offer her price. Cait pulled out her wallet at once. “All of what you have in his store for the two plants.” Vi’s head snapped toward Cait. “Sheriff, he’s robbing you blind!” Vi whispered to her partner. “At least let me try to bargain some.” “Love . . .” Cait turned and held Vi’s face between gentle palms, squishing her cheeks. “We were merchants once. I know how it works. There are a lot of things money cannot buy," she paused, looking over to Vi with eyes like the summer's sea, "but not these.” Vi felt almost dizzy at the affection. “Feeling like a pampered mistress, me.” Cait laughed. “Odd, as do I.” Vi held her palm and gave the fingertips a soft kiss. “That tickled!” “You’re pretty ticklish everywhere.” Vi teased. “Shut up,” Cait said, thrusting the boxes at Vi.

“I like that name. Violet,” Cait’s tone draped over the name softly. “Vi. Violet. They’re all you.” In the dimly lit room, Caitlyn Kiramman became vivid. “Vander’s idea.” “You grew up and became the names,” said Cait. She reached out a hand and held Vi’s in her own. “You’ve taken the wraps off.” “Don’t think that I must fight here.” Cait’s face lit up with a smile. She did not leave all the lights on, only the bedside lamps. They were sitting cross-legged in the center of her bed as Vi watched Cait’s unseeing and unmoving eyes. The blue of her prosthetic ones was startling. “You’ve also taken your blindfold off.” Cait touched the scars that criss-crossed her eyelids. “Yes.” Vi pulled a hand from of Cait’s grasp. “Mind if I—?” Cait shook her head gently. Vi reached up and touched the scars with her free hand. Running her fingers gently over them, she wrapped Cait’s fingers in the other and tightened the grip. “I never knew about the pit,” Cait mumbled at last, guilt-ridden—as if she had a say in the past time hobbies of the gaolers in Stillwater. “What for? Are you all that powerful, Princess Kiramman?” Vi asked, and Cait chuckled. “A word from you and the whole system gets reformed?” She frowned at that, contemplating. Realizing the weight of her words on Cait, Vi pointed between her brows and parted them with her forefinger and middle finger. “A broken system cannot be fixed by a 23-year-old.” The brows sprang back as soon as Vi let go. It was Vi’s turn to frown. Stubborn, this one.

They had been here for hours, playing before stopping to eat and then returning to the field. Vi and Cait had joined at some point, but after a while, dark wet spots began to spread on Caitlyn’s clothes as her hair plastered onto her face. She had to call off the evasion in frustration. “You stood no chance!” Powder had called out, seeing her opponent defeated. “You were so loud! And your laughter confused me,” Caitlyn had screamed back from half a field away as Vi guided her back to where Raven was lying with her legs stretched out in front of her. “THAT’S CALLED A TACTIC!” Powder had yelled back and turned to her squad. Vi and Caitlyn had been sitting across from her since, and their hair had mostly dried by now.
