Sampling a molten Lava on Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii | #Geology #geologypage #Lava #volcano #Hawai
On September 11, 2023, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists conducted an overflight to study a new eruption in the Kīlauea summit caldera, focusing on the east part of Halemaʻumaʻu crater and the adjacent downdropped block formed in the 2018 collapse, with a safe location identified for collecting a molten sample to understand magma characteristics, requiring permission and coordination with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Lava fountaining at Kīlauea, Hawai'i | #Geology #GeologyPage #volcano #kilauea #hawaii
Recorded on the evening of September 10, 2023, near the Uēkahuna overlook in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, this footage captures the onset of a new eruption within Kīlauea caldera. Following approximately an hour of heightened seismic activity and ground deformation, the eruption commenced at 3:13 p.m. on the same day. The video showcases lava fountains near the eastern rim of Halemaʻumaʻu crater, reaching heights of up to 130 feet (40 m). Notably, this summit eruption in Kīlauea is contained within a restricted area of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, with the primary concern being elevated levels of volcanic gas.
