Every therapist I've ever worked with has been startled and appalled to learn that I , a person with a chronic illness that leaves me too disabled to work, likely for the rest of my life, will never qualify for disability insurance. Because I'm married. And my husband makes more than minimum wage. I personally am not to bad off because I have the sheer good luck to have parents who are willing and able to let us live with them and contribute huge amounts of money and labor to supporting me. Every time it comes up I am a) newly angry that I will never have anything like financial independence, and b) enraged, grieved, and horrified for all the people in my situation who aren't as lucky in the support network they were born into. Ps: this is all absolutely a USA thing.
