Read the Losers last week, one of the latter Vertigo revamps of a dormant DC concept. This one has maybe the least to do with the original — it’s just the name. The original Losers stories are among the best war comics you’ll find because of the central theme of failure and futility. There are no winners in war, only survivors. I have a hardback trade of the Jack Kirby run on Our Fighting Forces somewhere that I recommend in particular
Andy Diggle does a great job of crafting a story that’s all about the monsters US foreign policy created (effectively, the CIA as a whole except one guy lmao) and the climactic reveal of where this has all been leading is like. One of my favorite “motive rants” I can name in comics history. The “necessary evil” the Company created goes rogue and holds a gun to the head of every nation in the world.
The theme of the US military industrial complex creating a monster beyond their control, who believes all of their own bullshit and turns loose in service of that agenda, reminded me some of the first Vertigo Unknown Soldier. It’s always the Brits looking in from the outside who have the most biting insight into what America got up to.

Recently revisited Blaze of Glory, the miniseries that acted as the final send off to the Marvel western characters. John Ostrander is good, the art by Leonardo Manco is great but the color palate is very… Gears of War. I guess that was the point though, sapping these characters of the color and flair and fantasy and showing them in stark relief. Outlaw Kid was easily the best character, a stuttering nervous farm boy who has a steely-eyed gunfighter split personality that takes control when he dons his mask
Pretty standard western plot, we have to save this simple town from a rapacious tycoon’s hired guns, not treading new ground here but idk I liked it. Kid Colt is the other character that really came alive to me, he’s a no good scoundrel with an honest heart
One thing you need to understand about me is that I collect wrestling t shirts but like only if I think they’re cool. I feel like the term “collector” implies a lack of discretion, my uncle collected action figures which meant he got all of the figures in a line, idk
