I once got a very probing "なぜそんなに土方が好きなの?" from my teacher and the implication was not "why are you so interested in this history", no, it was "why'd you pick THIS one", because she clearly thought the cool and cute Okita was a better choice.

it's really funny to have music be super attached to a particular moment and idea in your mind, even years later. i can listen to youth by daughter and think "yeah this is about those birds from hatoful boyfriend"

you don't appreciate good lyrics translators until you get into an artist who only has ppl who do overly literal translations with no sense of poeticism translating for them

one of my favorite things about historical fiction is seeing how the authors work in the surviving documents. there is always soooo much information we don't know, so how did the things we DO know survive? Was it because a character had a strong sentimental attachment to a specific item? Was there an elaborate string of coincidences that lead this one record to be in a different place while others were stolen, or burnt down? Was what was written in this letter the truth, or was someone trying to cover up their own failures so as to not embarrass or disappointed the letter's recipient? Were people thinking about their legacy? Did this generally accepted order of events, based on a first-hand account, really go this way? Or did the person who told the story lie to protect someone, maybe themselves? Did someone purposefully write down something untrue, even if they were not in the habit of recording their actions, because they knew that would be the story that survives?

the saddest thing about that episode to me was definitely the fact that they realized they've changed so much they could never go back to who they were before and that there's now an insurmountable gap between them and the people from their home town who used to be their peers
