As the last of the sun's golden rays caressed the spring-thawed hillsides of the karst, a weary, gray she-wolf laid down on the yellowed grass. Red gaze fixed on the ever darkening horizon, her form and visage never gave sign of the turmoil writhing inside, save for the slightest furrowing of her brow. The day's challenges were faced and overcome, but come morning new ones would arise, that she knew. Though she had no fear for herself, two little lives depended on her to be fed, nurtured and kept safe, which was in no way easy to do as they braved the unforgiving wilderness all on their own. Gruesome thoughts plagued her worried mind, but soon the mother forced them to quiet down. They survived this far, surely they would continue to do so.
