prompt: Come back inside. The cold doesn't care how angry you are.
Tightening the shawl that rests over her shoulders, Hannah sighs exasperatedly. "I'm not..." she begins with hot, biting vehemence that slowly dissipates into cold defeatism. Silence swells between them before she pops it with a soft interruption. "I'm scared, Charlie."
Shutting the front door, he leans back against it with crossed arms. "Of what, darlin'?"
Tears well in shimmering pools of deep chestnut. Looking ahead at the dimming horizon, Hannah watches as colts, and the freshly broken mustang that still needs a name, trot lazily around their wooden pen. "Everything. Being pregnant, being here, the fact that I'm probably never going home again."
Charlie sighs, then takes a step forward. Pulling Hannah against his chest, he presses a gentle kiss to the top of her head; to her curly hair that smells of oatmeal soap and warm Texas sunshine. "Alright, we'll start with the first one: why're you afraid of carryin' our little one?"
Reaching up, she settles her hands over his and holds fast to calloused fingers. "What if I get sick? Or it's breach? Or—"
"You focus strictly on the potential for things to go poorly and they will. S'posed to enjoy it: growin' new life. Becomin' a mother."
She rolls her eyes skyward. For all his curiosity about what the future holds—which he won't even be there to see—he's still most certainly a product of his own time.
"Now, next one: why're you scared of bein' here? Thought you liked the ranch—how much simpler things are; that everything is slower."
She dips her chin. "It's harder. Like, a lot more work than what I'm used to. There's no... "Amenities." It all has to be done by hand, so I feel freakin' exhausted constantly."
Take away the luxuries of modern appliances—washers and dryers, electricity and air conditioning, a microwave, hot running water, and a toilet that flushes, not to mention an iPhone—and you're left with nothing but the glaring, impoverished prospects in front of you. Of which there are many in comparison to what she has 170 years from now.
"Honey, if I had more I could give you to make any of it easier, I would. But I'm not an inventor. I couldn't craft one of the machines you've told me about even if you drew me a diagram. The parts just don't exist yet."
"Yeah," she pouts. "I know."
Truth be told, he'd rather avoid the last comment she made about never going home again. Far as he's concerned, Hannah's already there: right where's she meant to be. "C'mon," he begins with an encouraging pull of her arm. Turning around, Charlie pushes open the front door. "Let's go inside. Get you warm again."
HANNAH MCCREARY
Nickname(s): (by charlie) han, baby girl, sweetheart, baby doll, kiddo, sugar, honey Age: 19 Occupation: n/a
All-American girl next door, straight A student (with the occasional C in math), and sweet as apple pie would be how many describe Hannah McCreary. Or...did until her parent's death when she was seventeen. After their unbearable loss, she merely trudged through her final year of high school. She gave up cheer, stopped filling out college applications, and settled for remaining in her small hometown of Gap Creek—in her childhood home, that is—where she deemed she best belonged, along with her elder brother, Charlie. Her purpose? Tending to the home they left behind.

PARIS, TEXAS
Robbing banks from Amarillo to Laredo and living out of cheap, neon-lit motels and Charlie's Silverado, Hannah and her older brother cut a path of chaos across the Lone Star State in an attempt to make their fortune after their parents' demise, but just like Bonnie & Clyde, their story will inevitably end with a bang—not a whimper—since neither intend to go quietly... Should their luck finally run out with the law.
TEXAS KILLING FIELDS
Charlie's only ever been the jealous type when it comes to one young woman; apple of his eye that she's always been. Hannah. His heart in human form, walking around on two legs... Which begs him to consider the gut-wrenching prospect of her one day using 'em to up and leave him for another man who ain't worthy of her. Getting it into his head that only he is, he'll go to any means necessary to keep his baby sister close to his side... Including that of fresh dug graves in the middle the Texas desert or in abandoned oil fields.
YESTERYEAR
drabbles
During a solo road-trip to meet friends for a music festival, Hannah is forced onto what's supposed to be a short detour due to a road closure, but soon gets lost on a dusty back road with no end in sight. When she blows a tire, her situation goes from bad to worse. Traversing unfamiliar desert on foot in desperate search of cell service eventually thrusts her back in time. To the year 1856. Saved from the dire consequences of heat exhaustion by a cowboy named Charlie who takes her back to the safety of his ranch, she must—in time—make a choice about which side of it she belongs on.

prompt: you make the hard days worth coming home from.
Hannah flushes a pretty shade of pink—the same color which spreads across the southern Texas skyline at dusk in the heat of summer—then situates the last glass in the dishwasher's top rack. “Well, you make it easy to be here,” she replies softly while playfully bumping her hip against his. Picking up a dish towel, she fiddles with the thinning fabric. “Easier than it was... After... ”
When she trails off with a pensive look, Charlie wraps her in his arms, then pulls her against his broad chest. Threading his fingers in her curly mess of matching brown hair, he kisses the crown of her head. “We're gonna get there, baby. Just gotta keep givin' it time.”
She nods and tries to quiet a sniffle by pressing her face between his pecs. “I know,” she mumbles in half-hearted reply.
“Alright, kiddo,” Charlie begins. Taking a step back, he grabs Hannah's hand and extends her arm above her head before twirling her around like she's a dancing ballerina. When he pushes her in the direction of the living room, she snickers. “Go pick out a movie. Somethin' to distract us.”
Skipping over the threshold between the hardwood kitchen and carpeted living room, she hums thoughtfully. “We could watch—”
“Not Urban Cowboy again, or so help me,” he calls after her.
✦ ⋆ 𖤓 ⋆ ✦ 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 ··· a collection of ranch devotion, inherited legacy, the wild west, lovers divided by blood-soaked land and the lives built on it. genre: romance, angst, hurt and comfort, western drama.
The land doesn't lie. People do.
I've been riding this fence line since I was seven years old. Don't tell me I don't belong here.
You want to sell it. I want to die on it. I don't think we're gonna see eye to eye.
Come back inside. The cold doesn't care how angry you are.
I didn't ask to be born into this. But I'm not walking away from it either.
This ranch has buried better people than you and it'll bury better people than me.
Don't make me choose between you and this land. You won't like what I choose.
I found your horse at the gate this morning. Where the hell have you been?
The boots on your feet were my grandfather's. Remember that when you're making decisions about his land.
I'm not asking you to understand it. I'm asking you to respect it.
There's a storm coming in from the north. You staying or going?
You've been standing at that fence for an hour. Whatever it is, just say it.
I know what it looks like. But there are things about this family you don't know yet.
If I kiss you now, I’m not sure I’ll have the good sense to stop.
Sit down. Eat something. Whatever war you're fighting can wait until morning.
You’re the prettiest trouble this ranch has ever seen.
The cattle don't care about your feelings. Neither does the weather. Get up.
You want loyalty? Earn it. Out here it doesn't come free.
The fire took the east barn. We don't have time to grieve it.
You left when it was easy to leave. Don't come back now that it's hard to stay away.
Nobody out here is innocent. We're just honest about what we've done.
You’re softer than you let on. Lucky for you, I’m real fond of soft things.”
The river doesn't run through your property. It runs through mine. That matters.
You make the hard days worth coming home from.
Ever seen a sunrise over open land like this? No? Then you don't know what you're fighting for.
You make this old place feel less lonely.
This brand means something. It means we protect our own.
You can't buy what this land means to us. You can only take it.
You want to talk about legacy? My great-grandmother broke this ground with her bare hands.
I'm not leaving. You can threaten everything I have and I'm still not leaving.
Come here. You're shaking.
The foreman found the body at the south pasture.
You were supposed to be gone by now. Why aren't you gone?
I've loved this land longer than I've loved anything living. That's not something I'm ashamed of.
Dance with me. Don’t matter if there’s no music.
Stay. Just through the winter. After that, if you still want to go, I won't stop you.
CHARLIE MCCREARY
Nickname(s): cowboy Age: 32 Occupation: bronc rider, roughneck
Raised on a small patch of land in northern Texas, Charlie's first love came in the form of a horse. From the moment his father plopped him on the back of a freshly broken Bronc at four-years-old, he knew he'd never have a greater love. Until, after he turned thirteen, his mother gave birth to his beloved baby sister, Hannah. Absolute apple of his eye and just as sweet as the named pie, she took first place in his life while he continually took home buckles and trophies for earning as much through rodeo competitions.
"McCreary" practically became a household name across Texas as the young man easily climbed and competed his way through the rodeo circuit—nearing a chance to have his name up in lights one day even, amongst the greats—until disaster struck in the form of a car accident which took he & Hannah's parents from them and this world.
In an instant, everything changed. Buckles went into boxes, as did his belongings when he moved out of his place in Dallas and into his parent's empty house instead. He took on odd jobs here and there to ensure ends were met, but never quit riding. Although, now, it was simply for leisure. He didn't chafe at his newfound responsibility to Hannah, but instead took pride in being her provider and protector.
