On top of all the annoying real life bullshit I have to untangle, my little Time Lord friend ended up mentally and physically broken, in chains, and who knows what will happen to him. Was maybe not the day to listen to that. Far more depressed about all that than I, or any rational adult, should be. There is probably something wrong with me, but it's not like we didn't know that.

Can hardly write a sentence. Just staring blankly at the Word doc. Watching a Doctor Who episode seems like a sensible 4am choice.

Out of all the Doctor Who and Doctor Who-adjacent characters, this is the guy I look at and think, "Yeah, we are kindred spirits."

I love the idea of 12+Gally gang.

In the meantime, how about a fic where 12, when he's on Gallifrey during 'Hell Bent,' learns that Romana's been imprisoned in the Matrix data slice. While he's in the Cloisters with Clara, he frees her before stealing the TARDIS and running away.

It would end up as a complete AU, depending on what BF do with Romana, and I don't like writing AUs, generally speaking. But it seems like a cool idea.

As the Gallifrey War Room episodes go on, you start looking at the Doctor's decision to use the Moment and thinking, "Eh, not the worst idea in the world."

Whacking it into a pocket dimension so Rassilon couldn't do anything to anyone outwith Gallifrey was also not a terrible idea. A wee bit more humane to the rest of the Gallifreyan population, although they still had to put up with Rassilon until Twelve stumbled out of the confession dial.

We can listen to 'Gallifrey' with a weird sense of irony, because we know how the Time War ends. And we know how Rassilon's presidency ends. He's not deposed by a coup of idealists wanting a freer, better, more democratic Gallifrey, nor by Narvin, Romana, Rasmus, et. al., who'd probably be quite happy with the same old stodgy oligarchy as before. No, he's deposed by the Doctor, singlehandedly, because he's royally pissed and acting completely in his own self-interest. Could not give a flying fuck about a freer, more democratic Gallifrey. War, Ten, and Eleven left Gallifrey to its batshit sociopathic tyrant of President, but Twelve...well...batshit tyrant got his companion killed and tortured him in a time loop for a few billion years. Oh, no, you don't make that mistake. The 'oncoming storm' indeed.

Once Twelve gets what he wants (access to the extraction chamber), he fucks right off and leaves Gallifrey to whatever messy power vacuums follow in his wake.

I want to know what happens next.

I hope some enterprising nerd is making a list. ;) I wish I was, but I always listen to these whilst driving, which makes writing things down rather difficult. The whole 'Gallifrey' series has been rather excellent for Gallifreyan swearing (Narvin in particular is always firing off something...). A wee collection of Gallifreyan invective wouldn't go amiss, since I hate making Time Lords use Earth swear words in fics. As great as some of those words are, they don't have any cultural valence for Gallifreyans.

Really fed up with writing today but it's like the only thing I can do. It's just never good enough. I can't make those sentences lyrical or dazzling enough, or the narrative clever and light and insightful enough. And for fuck's sake, I'd love to be able to write a brilliant Op Ed for something like The Atlantic but I have nothing interesting to say or qualifications that make my drivel worthwhile.

Like when they don't just show up five minutes before the Doctor arrives.

Holding staff meetings.

Signing paperwork.

Literally saw a post with people dredging up old interview quotes Davies gave about regeneration and basically saying (not a direct quote, but I do think I've captured thes entiment) "Note to future showrunners: People get really, really attached to a given Doctor so you shouldn't just regenerate a Doctor for the sake of it, that's basically like killing a fav character for a lot of people"

And I'm sorry but at that point you're just descending into self-parody. Cool, let's not let the show recycle lead actors like it's done for sixty years now. I hope you like the show fucking ending OH WAIT!

Even if Ncuti Gatwa had decided to stay on for the rest of his natural life, and the show kept going until he was ninety… he would die, eventually.

The whole point of the show is that it can go on forever, and the only limits are those imposed by your own ability to conceive of new ideas. Why should that be sacrificed just so the viewers aren't ever made to feel uncomfortable? What, are we just supposed to pretend that death doesn't exist anymore? I know the tech CEOs would dearly love us to use AI to resurrect those who have passed away, whether it be William Hartnell or your own grandmother, but that's not what media should be about.

Shit that's not what *life* should be about.

I realise that it's a lot to extrapolate out of one stupid Tumblr post. But it's not one stupid Tumblr post, it's an entire cultural edifice built around people wanting to pretend that things can stay the same as they were when they were fourteen forever (and spoiler alert: when you were fourteen, the world still sucked! You were in high school! Even if you set aside the whole "You just didn't know about bad geopolitical events" of it all, your world still probably sucked and you hated it, in one way or another!) and it's just *exhausting*.

Baffled by Davies' quote, though. "note to future showrunners: People get really, really attached to a given Doctor so you shouldn't just regenerate a Doctor for the sake of it…" Huh? What planet is he on? I don't think anyone regenerates the Doctor for the sake of it. Obviously, as anyone with sense knows, they do it because an actor wants to leave, or someone up the food chain wants an actor to leave. No one's gonna stay in the one job forever and ever. Unless it's Eastenders.

Or does he mean all regenerations should be bigenerations, so Time Lords are all basically like amoebas? So no one has to go through the pain of losing their favourite Doctor? Even if your Doctor isn't on screen, you know they're off enjoying cocktails on a beach somewhere while the new regeneration gets on with Doctoring.

I curled into a ball and lost all dignity at 'The Doctor Falls' and 'Logopolis,' but that's the point. Somehow, this silly little sci fi show makes you fall in love with this daft alien, and when they invariably twat themselves and have to regenerate, it's hard, but that's life.

For a guy who can write some very hard-hitting television, like 'It's a Sin,' Davies sure does like to pull his punches with Doctor Who. I never quite forgave him for giving Rose her very own pet Doctor after she got stuck in the parallel universe.
