OASE #100: The Architecture of the Journal / Available at www.draw-down.com / The 100th issue of OASE takes the journalâs long-standing collaboration with its graphic designer #KarelMartens as a starting point to explore the relationship between #architecture journals and #graphicdesign. In doing so, it challenges the conventional idea that architecture journals are mere carriers of information, showing instead how these journals play a defining role in the message they convey. Adhering to Marshall McLuhanâs famous maxim âthe medium is the messageâ, it considers the graphic space of the journal, its materiality, its production, and the physical experience of reading. The landmark issue zooms in on the relationship between architecture journals and graphic design, starting with a historical overview before considering the specific history of #OASE and the practice of its own graphic designer. The aim is to provide an insight into the close and mutually enriching relationship between the graphic design of an architecture journal and the production of architectural knowledge. Includes the articles âMagazine Architectureâ; âKarel Martens and the Architecture of the Journalâ; âHarvest of Oasis: Merits and Dilemmas of the Gridâ by #LindavanDeursen; and âImageless Architecture Building Metaphors for a Typographic Gridâ as well as a transcribed converation between Karel Martens and the issueâs editors. Dreaming is Heavy Metal: Grace Ahlbom / Available at www.draw-down.com / Designed by Benjamin Ganz. âPin-holes cut from cardboard, shining a flashlight through it for a fraction of a second. Imagery that I found from fanzines, brought into the darkroom and made into cyanotypes. Shrines, relics, and fan culture have long possessed a magnetic intrigue for me. On a trip to Norway, I happened upon a record shop that ignited my curiosity about the fanaticism of the #blackmetal scene.â âGrace Ahlbom / Published by #SoftOpening, 2018 / Printed in a #limitededition of 300 copies
