now that my migraine is gone and my back pain is less present i can somewhat articulate my thoughts on the chapter:
its ugly
i just do not like the push for mir@xus
i especially dont like the push for mir@xus given how little they speak in canon.
I don't read enough manga to say that this is the worst downgrade of manga art I've ever seen. You all know I don't ignore his art regression but it's HARD to ignore especially when there are panels using old, significantly better art in this chapter. I don't have anything to say it just looks rushed and bad down to the paneling.
Every single pair in this series has felt more like shonen romance tropes and fanservice than decent character and relationship building, especially without those characters relying on that ship. I've never personally liked how Mashima writes (at all) romance, so even when the ships with the strongest hints of being endgame reach that point***, it always falls flat for me.
When ft ended with Laxus' interests being more of a mystery it was such a relief because it meant the never ending trend of "straight ship is canon despite relationship with man being more developed" (whatever its called) wouldn't apply to him but it looks like it's happening and I can't be shocked but I won't act like I like it.
Mind you, this series is straight as hell, and this fandom has always been straight as hell. I am the least bit surprised that Mashima would write a special chapter just to imply yet another popular straight ship is canon in the verse.
***I've also felt like he's a bit of a coward when it comes to sincere romance, beyond shonen tropes. I am talking mostly about G@jevy here: Gaj33l called L3vy the woman he loved in canon, and yet, within that proper context (not as mouth-to-mouth or in Juv*a's imagination in a special chapter), they wont kiss. Wont talk about marriage.
I figure they will at some point and the mf's only voicelines are about his kids so they've HAD sex, but not only is that the only progression of that relationship Mashima is willing to write, but that's all either of them are anymore. I would like, greatly, for that to not be the same for Laxus and Mira. For the love of god does any of this make sense. don't even get me started on the death of juv*a's character. i don't know if he knows what he wants gr@y to be.
Given how Mashima never writes ships into explicitly becoming canon except for one so far and look at the state of it, I'm fully prepared to eat my words. It'll be like a four course meal if it's just friendship and fuck all else. But I ship Lax33l you all know I don't care about what happens outside of my house.
