Hello! I bought a Yukata in a place where I could not try it on. Arriving home and finally being able to try it on, I realized, that it is too small. My hips are just too wide and the yukata won't close on the front. It's such a pity, especially because it was quite an expensive purchase for me. I really want to wear it, what could I do to wear it even if the size is not right?
Oh no! I don’t have much experience with yukata, being 6’3” and all lol. I do know that when my group was dressed in kimono, they used an under layer put on me normally, and then an outer layer that covered the gap in the lower layer and instead placed the gap to the side, revealing the under kimono instead of mu undergarments lol. So layering is possibly an option? Sorry I’m not much help, but I’ll post this here so that hopefully one of my followers who is more knowledgeable than me will see!
Wish you the best! <3
layering is not really a thing done with yukata. in hot, humid Japanese summers, the yukata and slip underneath are sometimes too much! (a lot of people even forgo the slip for shorts and a tank top, too.) under layers are something that’s part of how proper kimono are worn.
as a wide-hipped kitsuke student, myself, i know those feels, though. if it won’t close at all, there may not be much you can do, i’m afraid… can you get any kind of closure at all? i’ve heard of some people having success in taking apart yukata (and kimono) and re-sewing it with a smaller amount of fabric in the seams, but that may or may not be something worth the effort to you depending on your abilities/interests in sewing.
you could always use it as a decoration?? or to dress one of your more Japanese-sized friends?
yukata are one of the few types of kimono that can actually be found rather easily in larger sizes. idk if you in Japan or not, but there are a lot of sites where you can order plus-sized yukata, and a lot of the better sites will actually tell you the max hip circumference the garment will fit. (other sites will list the widths of the different panels making up the garment and you have to do the math yourself to see if it will fit.)
ichiroya stocks plus-sized yukata, and kimono machi on rakuten offers yukata (and kimono) in some plus sizes as well as tall sizes.
