I'm a freshman on my school's speech and debate team, and I am doing Congress and Policy. Any advice?
I actually never did policy and Congress was not a regular event in my district, so this is mostly good-for-all-events and observation. But:
Stay up to date and spend a lot of time on cutting evidence for policy. Learn to enunciate fully even when speaking fast and learn to understand spreading (my high school coach had policy kids listen transcribe the fast rap she could find; try that). Learn by heart the logical fallacies.
Anybody else got any suggestions?

freshman year: wow this is gonna be so much fun i'm going to win everything
sophomore year: ha this isn't as fun as it used to be but there's still hope that i can go to nationals
junior year: why the fuck am i still on the team i hate this and i hate losing my saturdays and the same kids keep going to nationals over and over again and it's not worth it and it's my own fault i don't do as well as i hope but I DON'T CARE ANYMORE but at least POWERPUFF
senior year: why did i keep doing this i hate this and even though i've won in high school none of this is worth it at all

November 2012 Public Forum Topic
Current U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East undermines our national security.
The neg is so fucked on this topic. So, so fucked. Like, I'll have to do some reading and thinking to have any advice.
Remember that the Middle East is a specific set of countries, which does not include Libya, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Do not get side tracked.Â
Go read the news on each of the ME countries and keep up. Syria, Yemen, Iran, Israel/Iran, and Turkey/Syria in particular.
DO NOT get caught up in any analysis of Iran as actually being dangerous. It really isn't. A lot of their rhetoric is kind of like an angry cat fluffing up to make itself look bigger, and frankly it has every right to feel threatened. We have a fuck ton of bases in nearly every country it boards with.
Research the history of anti-American terrorism in/from the ME.
Read up on the major terrorist groups running around in the ME.
Research American counter insurgency (COIN) strategy.
Remember that a significant portion of our national security comes from not pissing people off.
Drones in Yemen. 'Nuff said.
The STUXNET worm. That was a tremendously bad idea.
It's probably not a good idea to talk about Israel or the Israel/Palestine situation if you can help it, but if you can force the opposing side to, do it and be prepared to argue it in return. Israel is teeming with racist, anti-democracy (for Palestinians) assholes. There's an Independent article on it, called The new Israeli apartheid: Poll reveals widespread Jewish support for policy of discrimination against Arab minority. I would link, but I'm having trouble with Tumblr lately. Anyway, supporting a racist state no one else likes fuels anti-American sentiment and we're not real well equipped to fight terrorism.
