So I know this is an account solely dedicated to Trevor Stines, but I’m sure a little leeway to another topic can be tolerated.
We are approaching, or waiting, for the 4th Season of Rick and Morty. And by all means, I don’t mean to pressure Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon to work on the 4th Season every hour of their day. If you guys want quality content on Rick and Morty, then you should wait. An essay is more strategically written and organized in a few days than an hour.
Anyways, besides virtually annoying the 14-year-olds who detest waiting, I have an important topic to discuss: Evil Morty.
There are many theories existing in the Rick and Morty Fan Universe, but there’s only one that makes the most sense to me. Evil Morty is the original Morty of the Rick we see in every episode. Let me start from the beginning by adding screenshots and images so you don’t tire out your eyes by staring at a bunch of dumb paragraphs.
Evil Morty is seen in 2 episodes through the entirety of Rick and Morty. First, on Season 1 Episode 10 “Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind” and secondly, on Season 3 Episode 7 “The Ricklantis Mixup” or “Tales from the Citadel.”
!!! Watch the episodes, please. I am here for the theory not for the full explanation of the episodes. !!!
Now, let us speak about S1 E10. In the beginning, a rather Evil looking Rick kills another Rick.
Then (so far unknown) Evil Morty tranquilizes the Morty for the taking. This is so he can add Mortys to his Dome of Mortys. (Elaboration later)
As we switch to our infamous Rick, the Citadel appears through a portal to announce that Rick “is under arrest for the crimes against alternative Ricks by the authority of Transdimensional Council of Ricks.” Talk about a long sentence. So Rick goes along with the dumb Ricks to see what this is about.
Now, an important detail to note when they arrive at the citadel is their background. Here are two images for reference. Look closely and tell me what you see.
You might’ve seen it. You might’ve not. I am here to tell you, folks. Look at the Trump Alien Rick and Morty. Look at the Deformed Rick and Morty. (As well as the Cowboy Rick and Morty which impressed Morty) They clearly match as a Rick and Morty team. Right? Meaning that Rick and Morty match outside AND inside. Inside as in motions, heart, specifically the brain. Even at the end of the episode, Rick says “It would go without saying that the Rickest Rick would have the Mortiest Morty.”
Point 1:
Our Rick is the smartest Rick. Evil Morty is the smartest Morty.
Many people have pointed out the dichotomy between Rick and Morty. Their personality, behaviors, and intelligence. Well, there it is. It is a very lucid difference. Rick is a narcissist. Morty is insecure. Rick is very abrupt while Morty is very cautious. Rick is an egotistical Einstein and Morty is a dumb piece of bread. That for one shows that they are not a match made in heaven. Or Earth Dimension C-137.
Alright. Let’s move on. As Rick enters the (how should I call it) Citadel Courtroom, he is blamed guilty for killing the Ricks. Rick asks, and I quote, “Why am I the first Rick pulled in everytime a Rick stubs his toe?” One of the rather funky looking Council members replies “You have a history of non-cooperation with the Council.”
My brain here goes A-HA! So does Evil Morty! He hates the Council which is why in the 2nd episode he is revealed in, he murders members of the Council who think they will continue to rule the Council even in his presence. This ties in with Point 1. Rick and Evil Morty have similar views. Would you look at that?
Point 2:
Both Rick and Evil Morty despise the Citadel of Ricks
As Rick is tired from hearing the Council speak he rebels (like always) and escapes with Morty. He explains to Morty that every Rick needs a Morty to cancel out “genius waves” by the uhm “Morty waves.” (He obviously means the dumb waves) Morty doesn’t seem to welcome this information he hears and becomes rather apprehensive.
Anyways, Rick traces the signals that hacked his portal gun and unveils its location. Rick says that the real killer hacked his portal gun to “obviously frame him.” Now, I know this isn’t really something to look far into but I do have a point to explain further on. Remember this piece.
Rick says that the real killer hacked his portal gun to “obviously frame him.”
As both Rick and Morty go to the location they discovered they see a Dome of Mortys (as I will call it. Yes, dramatic I know) As they approach the Dome of Mortys, Rick says that he “fiddled with a concept like this once.” Another quality point showing that Evil Morty and Rick think the same. Meaning. . . (you should be catching on at this point) that Evil Morty belongs to our Rick.
As we move on we can see that Morty, being very annoyed at Rick as being seen as a human shield makes a lot of noise causing them to be found inside the Dome of Mortys. Here is a picture because I have been ranting for quite a while and I believe that you should have a break. Thank me later.
Next is the long-awaited encounter of the Original Rick and Original Morty. (In my opinion, Evil Morty is Original Morty) To be completely honest, it was not eventful but rather aggravating for both of them. Rick, again being the controller of the two, degraded Evil Morty and Evil Morty. . . well, he just got annoyed. That’s that.
As Evil Morty leads Morty to the Chamber of Mortys. Morty says “Hey man, you seem to know how this place works. Is there any way we could shut down that grid and rescue all those Mortys outside?” Evil Morty replies very specifically. In fact, across the whole episode of “The Ricklantis Mixup,” we will be seeing this message everywhere. And I mean everywhere. He says “It would be pointless. Mortys have no chance of defeating a Rick.”
“Mortys have no chance of defeating a Rick.”
Point 3:
Evil Morty is aware of the superiority of Ricks and is leading himself to a world of superiority of Mortys instead.
As Morty is in the Chamber of Mortys, Rick is tied to a dentist chair (something like that) while Evil Morty speaks to him through his Evil Rick. Evil Morty says “You see, Rick. You’re not as clever as you think you are. I wanted you to find me. We’re not so different you and I.” Rick doesn’t think much of this and replies with a “Yeah, well duh.”
Rick assumed that Evil Rick was talking about how they were both Ricks. But I’d like to point out that that is not what he was trying to say at all. He is saying that they are, in fact, the exact same. Same origin and same dimension.
Evil Rick then explains to Rick why he chose Rick. Okay. Great. Then Rick says “I get it. So, you want me to team up with you to take down the Council of Ricks. Right?” Evil Rick then says “Please. I think I am doing pretty good on my own. I’m just going to download the contents of your brain. And then kill you”
(I would queue the music now if you want to get chills)
The reasoning behind this is to rid of someone smarter than Evil Morty by adding the intelligence to himself. Yeah, Evil Morty. Pretty good. Evil Rick then begins to play a video of Ricks life. As Rick starts tearing up Evil Rick says “You’re crying? Over a Morty? Ugh, pathetic. We both know that if there’s any truth in the universe it’s that Ricks don’t care about Mortys.”
“Ricks don’t care about Mortys.”
Point 4:
Evil Morty believes that Ricks don’t care about Mortys.
As Morty escaped the Chamber of Mortys and defeated Evil Rick, Rick calls the Council of Ricks and tells them he found the culprit. As Rick and Morty are leaving, Rick says that “A cocky Morty can lead to some big problems. It could be a real bad thing for everybody.” Leaving Morty confused Rick says that he’ll explain when he’s older. After Rick and Morty leave, the Council of Ricks finds out that Evil Rick has a receiver in his head. But where’s the transmitter?
Wow. That was some explanation. Now we get to S3 E7. Bear with me. If you’re truly looking for details for this theory then hopefully my post/article (I mean it is long) gives some insight.
This Episode starts off with Rick and Morty getting ready to go on an adventure to the Lost City of Atlantis. Rick K-22 comes in through a portal with his Morty and asks Rick and Morty to fund “The Citadel of Ricks: Redevelopment.” Rick says “We’re done with the Citadel of Ricks. I was never on board with it in the first place. That’s why I murdered everyone in charge and left it to rot.” K-22 realizes who he’s talking to as his Morty says “Well, you’ll be happy to know that the Council is gone now.” and Morty says “Yeah he knows. He murdered them.”
Here is the fun part. Rick murdered the last one. Not the present one. Evil Morty murdered the present Council (as I stated before). Here’s an image to re-jog your memory.
So, back to the Citadel. Evil Morty somehow. I elaborate SOMEHOW managed to campaign himself for Citadel Presidency. All the Mortys love him. He’s doing great.
In this episode, we tune into 3 stories besides the Evil Morty. The Rick and Morty Police Partners, The Student Mortys, and the Factory Worker Rick. You know how I said that there was a message being constantly repeated by Evil Morty in his first episode of appearance? Well, now it’s being highlighted in this episode.
For the first scene of the Rick and Morty Police Partners, we see how Police Rick is actually in touch with his emotions and how the Police Morty is disgusted by Mortys. They head off to Morty Town for an assignment. Morty Town is the town of Mortys without Ricks who lead their own lives in the Citadel. Plain simple.
Police Rick gets injured while on the job. Police Morty picks him up and says something that will forever be a bad choice by the Citadel, but eventful for Evil Morty. Police Morty says “Nothing’s wrong with putting your faith in a Morty. You just have to pick the right one.”
“Nothing’s wrong with putting your faith in a Morty. You just have to pick the right one.”
They later end up in The Creepy Morty. Police Morty was handling an inside job for Big Morty. A mafia head. Police Rick didn’t like the sound of this and got them into a shooting. At the end of the shooting, Police Morty wanted to kill Big Morty (the mafia head) so he doesn’t talk. Police Rick had to kill Police Morty because of his lack of professionalism. Policemen arrive and ask Police Rick what happened. And he said something rather very important for my theory. “Same old story. Ricks killing Mortys.” Remember this piece.
“Same old story. Ricks killing Mortys.”
We meet the 4 Student Mortys in their classroom being taught to accept and support a Rick the “proper” way. The Student Mortys are being assigned their Ricks tomorrow. They decide to go to the Wishing Portal since it’s their last day. As they get there the first 3 Mortys throw something valuable into the Wishing Portal to make their wishes come true. Slick Morty points out that none of their wishes are going to come true. He says that “Morty wishes never come true in the Citadel.” His friends ask him why he brought them there then and he replies that he wishes it would change. That everything would change. “Well you better put something really important in there,” says Smart Morty. “Yeah. Me too” replies Slick Morty as he throws himself into the portal.
This scene doesn’t clearly have a connection to my Evil Morty theory, but I can attest that Evil Morty had the same wish as Slick Morty. He’s not the only Morty who felt that way. The only difference is that Evil Morty is someone who takes action. Is someone who took action.
Factory Rick is someone who is upset that he works in a factory and how he didn’t get promoted after working there for 15 years. He gets a surge of anger and kills his boss. He’s a Rick with the same intelligence level as all the other Ricks in the Citadel, yet he labors away in a factory while some are resting in their mansions. I couldn’t really find a direct connection between him and Evil Morty either. But again I’m sure that Evil Morty was targeting Citadel members like this Rick.
Evil Morty is held up on a political debate with the other contesters. They try to slide him a question that would halt his gained support. They ask him about the divide between Ricks and Mortys. This part I find very odd. Evil Morty preaches to the audience that he doesn’t see a divide between Ricks and Mortys. As we saw in his first episode he was very, and I mean very, candid how Ricks are superior to Mortys. He instead speaks of the divide between the Ricks and Mortys who are for and against the citadel.
I believe that his speech is for show. (The evidence for this is when he says “But speeches are for campaigning” at the end of the episode) He does it to gain the support of the Citadel and win the election. A rather smart move. He must be a true politician.
Another reason for his speech could be to target Original Rick. By leaving the Ricks and Mortys who are against the citadel in the light he can lead the citadel members to give them a hard time. Since he was with Rick for a long time he knows that Rick is apart of those Ricks and Mortys who are against the Citadel. He plans on creating a path where Rick will be brought to him easily and casually. But to do what. I have no idea.
Anyways, Evil Morty wins the election. Huzzah! And I’ve said it before he kills the Council members who feel superior to him.
As Rick and Morty return to their homes after their calm adventure to the Lost City of Atlantis, they have no idea of what’s to come or what is happening.
To end off all the factual evidence I could give I would like to end this piece with Evil Morty's “cold and calculated speech with sinister overtones.”
“A speech about politics. About orders. Brotherhood. Power. But speeches are for campaigning. Now is the time for action.”
I know you’re bored. I know you want this evidence-based theory to wrap up and finish. And that is exactly what I am about to do. Now, remember how I told you to Remember this piece? There were two of them.
Rick says that the real killer hacked his portal gun to “obviously frame him.”
You guys probably didn’t question this piece of information. Allow me to help you question it. Why would Evil Morty want to frame our Rick? There must be some motive. An evil motive. And from this, I can infer there must be some dark history behind the Original Rick and Evil Morty. There could be so many things involved. Rick could’ve replaced his Morty. He might’ve left him on some detrimental planet. My own view is that he might’ve thought that Morty was dead and had to leave him behind. Evil Morty didn’t know that Rick thought he was dead and began believing that he was left behind on purpose. Whatever it is. I don’t believe that Evil Morty started off with bad intentions. He started off as a normal Morty just like the one we see on our screens in every episode. He lost faith in Ricks when he was left behind.
Point 5: (No Evidence)
Evil Morty is evil due to his past with Original Rick.
“Same old story. Ricks killing Mortys.”
Now, this ties into the unknown dark history behind the Original rick and the Original Morty. This quote is exactly why I believe that Rick might’ve killed Evil Morty. Either intentionally or unintentionally. Whatever it may be, Evil Morty is dead to Rick, but Evil Morty lives and prospers more than Rick ever could.
Point 6: (No Evidence)
Evil Morty believes that Rick left him behind alive with acknowledgment.
Okay, the last thing I would like to point out is a scene we already passed. The scene where Rick teared up watching his past with Morty.
Evil Morty was present when that happened. Correct? (Yes. He was Evil Rick) Having seen Rick tear up about Morty, instead of feeling any sad or happy emotions, he instead reminds Rick that “Ricks don’t care about Mortys.” This tells me that Evil Morty is so far into vengeance that he no longer can be satisfied by the emotions of his own Rick. This permits him to reach any depth and length of the remorseless evil inside of him.
Now we just wait (patiently) and see what Evil Morty is capable of executing in the next seasons.
Thank you so much for reading this. I know it’s long, but it’s also detailed so go ahead and smack these facts in everyone’s faces. And if Justin and Dan are reading this, if you guys have an epic reveal for Evil Morty, I can not wait. Kudos on the show!
