The Ticket That Exploded, is a novel published in 1962 by William S. Burroughs, which perfectly represents the author’s idea of a language as a virus. According to the writer, the language was not a natural code nor the shared air in which we all move making sense, but a devious opponent to be disarticulated, broken down and destroyed. Starting from this reflection, the project consists in revisiting the novel created with the aim to be destructed and altered through a series of physical processes.

“A series covers of classic books. The books were leather bound and the design was then foil stamped in two foil colors onto the full jacket and spine. This is probably my favorite project of all time and thanks to Jo the interiors are as beautiful as the covers. Each has marbled endpapers, painted page edges and matching ribbons and headbands.”

Jessica Hische is a letterer, illustrator, typographer, and web designer. She currently serves on the Type Directors Club board of directors, has been named a Forbes Magazine “30 under 30” in art and design as well as an ADC Young Gun and one of Print Magazine’s “New Visual Artists”. She has designed for Wes Anderson, McSweeney’s, Tiffany & Co, Penguin Books and many others. She resides primarily in San Francisco, occasionally in Brooklyn.
