job secured!, in an alleyway...?
"i mean, i only just got a job." nobara says, a hand of hers sliding across the table to place itself over your own as you stare out the window, dazed. watching the world outside walk, run, cycle, and drive past.
"huh? oh, right. uhm, congrats?" you squeeze out half-assed, a singular eye squinting, not knowing what exactly you should be saying. "i'm not looking for congratulations, y/n." nobara sighs, pulling her hand away.
the diner around you both is packed to the nines, but the screams and shouts of kids and buzz of people talking isn't enough to silence your mind from the thoughts that seem to whizz in and out.
thoughts that make you worry for your future.
"i'm letting you know it's not easy," she states, "it took me half a year to secure a job." nobara looks at you, trying to figure you out as you hum, nod, tap your fingers on the table in a nervous state.
"what time does your shift start?" you ask, moving to nibble on the skin of your fingers, eliciting a deep sigh from nobara who discreetly shakes her head at you before standing up. slowly reaching for her purse to sling it over her shoulder.
"ten minutes." your eyes widen at that and you look to nobara's face, a face that holds nothing but pity. for what? you wouldn't know.
"you better get going." you say as you jump up from your seat, your hands grabbing at your coat and handbag. you shoulder on your jacket, quickly slinging your handbag over your right shoulder as you watch nobara place a few notes on the tray with the receipt for the meal you'd both had.
the one you didn't have space to stomach.
"pay me back." nobara speaks up, grabbing at your wrist when you go to remove a few of her notes and place down some of your own. "pay me back when you can, i don't need the money right now." she assures you as she lets go of your wrist and watches you step back.
"see you?" nobara questions and you nod briefly, turning to leave after a few moments when you realised she wouldn't be moving any time soon. she didn't want you covering the bill behind her back.
you leave the diner, minus nobara, plus a hundred more thoughts and worries. you push over the door, allowing the cold wind from the outdoors to blow into your face and turn your cheeks red.
outside, the streets bustle with busy people, cars honk, kids cry and laugh. the city moves with life and you're left standing in front of the diner in a trance, all until the door to the diner slams shut behind you, causing you to jump.
"fucking hell." you breathe out, making move to stuff your hands into the pockets of your coat and walking quickly away from the diner to the parking lot right behind it.
today had oddly worsened your fear of not getting a job before college was back. it felt like every night you tossed and turned with nervousness that you wouldn't find a way to make enough money to pay off the school for the last year of your course.
you needed to complete the course, because, you needed a well-paying job to help you thrive.
you couldn't get that without a degree.
and, you wouldn't be able to get that degree without money.
cutting the corner, you're met face to face with a darkened alleyway. you take a quick step back, brows furrowed as you look around. "i swear the parking lot was 'round here?" you speak under your breath, slow steps moving you back into the alleyway as you suss out whether the parking lot is at the end of it or not.
you're met with nothing but a few rats squeaking from god knows where, a twitching light on a lamp post and silence.
it doesn't take a lot for you begin to clutch your handbag tighter to your side as you travel further down, only stopping for a second to wonder if it was even a good idea.
but, when you turn around to map out just how far in you are, you're met with darkness. "fuck." turning around completely, you begin to move back, moving faster than you had been when entering.
the only thing on your mind is getting the hell home, but, you come to the conclusion that might not be for a while when your foot collides with a rock of sorts on the floor and you end up on your stomach on the floor, breathing out a cough from the impact.
"ow." you groan, chest heaving as you plant your palms to the floor and begin to push yourself up. only, when you begin to rise, a pair of leather shoes enter your vision.
the further up your eyes travel, the more of a man you begin to make out, until, you're looking directly at his face.
"hey, need a hand?" he asks, a smirk etched across his face. "uh, i'm fine." you sit back onto your heels, dusting off your hands on your thighs before finally moving to rise to your full height before the mysterious man before you.
he extends his hand towards you, you eye it with suspicion until he speaks. because, when he speaks, he's got you hooked on one word, and one word only.
"hi, the names shiu kong. i help people find jobs." he winks, you take his hand. "y/n y/l/n, i'm looking for a job." your voice comes out breathier than intended, your cheeks run pink from embarrassment but you don't break the eye contact with him.
"hm, what can you do?" he questions, a brow raises as he looks you up and down, without a doubt noticing the stains on your clothes from falling. "anything." the man's lips curve at that, "that's not a qualification." a quiet laugh escapes him, a laugh he swallows back when he spots your desperate look.
shiu pulls out his phone, extending his phone towards you, he talks once again. "put in your number, i'll sort something out for you." you quickly grab the device from him, tapping in your number and ringing your cell to make sure you put the correct digits in.
once the rhythmic sound of your ringtone sounds, you hang up and hand shiu back his phone. "thank you so much." you hold out your hand, one he quickly shakes with a smile.
"just doin' my job, ma'am."
