Recently been reading Charlie Higson's The Enemy series (out of order; we live and die at the whims of the thrift store and the local library.) A zombie thing predicated on everyone over the age of 14-16 turning into a zombie; cue Lord of the Flies, but with zombies.
It's extremely stylistically interesting in how it handles zombies, in that they're of the technically-living strain, exceedingly diseased but with rudimentary tool usage, language and reasoning, clumsy medicine, personal idiosyncrasies, elaborate nesting behaviors and a vampiric aversion to the sun; this, coupled with the fact that the survivors are exclusively children and it's set in the heart of London, serves to layer a fairy tale aesthetic atop the situation- the zombies are cast, structurally, in the role of ogres, trolls, giants, wicked witches, and Boogeymen. It's a zombie apocalypse, yes, but from the perspective of the kids it's a Things-that-go-bump-in-the-Night Apocalypse, an Exaggerated Cautionary-Tale apocalypse. Don't stay out after dark or they'll Get You. Don't talk to Strangers or they'll Get You. Don't play alone or they'll Get You. It's really neat.
Alright, I've gotten through six out of seven books of Charlie Higson's The Enemy series, and I do have to say that the enclave of infected-but-not-yet-turned survivalists who settle on Robert Scott's famous last words of "I'm just going outside and may be some time" as a black-comedy in-joke code phrase to indicate that they need to be taken out of sight of the group and shot before they fully turn, has cemented itself as one of my favorite beats in anything zombie related ever
the enemy is so funny because yeah thats exactly what would happen if a bunch of pre-teens were the last people on earth. they would come up with names like shadowman and jester for each other and they would give the zombies funny nicknames.
The Enemy is a series of children's books where the coolest POV character in the series is a partially-zombified fifteen year old kid with severe facial disfigurement who fills every room in a farmhouse with the ritualistically-burned severed heads of the zombies that he hunts and kills in order to stave off suicidal ideation- the first head in the collection having belonged to his infected father figure whose body he tore apart in a psychotic, grief-fueled fugue state triggered by having to put down the only guy who's treated him like a person in living memory. I am once again hoping that the occasionally-discordant level of editorial tolerance extended to graphic violence in stories intended for children continues forever and ever and ever because I am eating very well here
Everyone: omg Jordan is so scary it’s so intimidating how he looks at you without really looking at you
Jordan, squinting: god I hope no one here figures out that I’m blind
