if you don’t want to change then you won’t change, except that’s not really how it works. you don’t change for the better, but you aren’t exactly the same person as you were the day before. (you don’t change for the better, but you change nonetheless). maybe you’re a little more bitter; maybe your bark and bite get a little harder to distinguish; maybe you care a little less. (you don’t care about changing, so you change anyway and your don’t care enough to notice, so you think that you aren’t changing, but you still aren’t the same). the world thinks the same thing. it can’t see that it’s changing how it holds itself together, but it change nonetheless. the sofa didn’t look like that before; the window has melted into the wall; the carpet isn’t where it used to be.
