this is one of arora's saddest lines to me. obviously she has about ten million to pick from, but it just hits really hard when you consider that everyone (other than otto) in her life has left in some way shape or form.
arora is someone who longs for connections that she can never quite make. for all her dreams about anton, the time she calls him "dad" and not "father" moments before he tries to kill her, following in his footsteps as a chemist, she can't ever make anton love her.
she finds common ground with dr kusamura - and converses with him with otto completely out of the picture, which is likely not something that she gets to do often - but he betrays her.
the trial victims, who she sees as her "boys", get killed by reagents.
otto, in one voiceline, compares arora to tantalus from greek myth. tantalus' punishment for offending the gods is to be eternally thirsty and hungry, but all food and water moves just out of reach from him whenever he tries to nourish himself. arora experiences something similar but with emotional connection. she tries and tries and tries to quench her loneliness, but every time it seems like she has a connection with someone other than otto, it gets ripped away from her. this likely reinforces their codependency - otto, physically, is the one person who cannot abandon her. but as much as she cares about him, it isn't enough to stop her feeling lonely.
like tantalus, she is taunted forever with satiating a desire that can never be fulfilled. and for indulgent people like the twins - who revel in their desires, partaking in them no matter what society thinks - it's no wonder that arora is so depressed by her lack of connection with anyone other than otto. it's something she can't ever have, even when everything else she's told she can't do is done. she can be a chemist, she can be incestuous with her brother, she can defy her father. but she can't have friends, she can't have children, and she can't be accepted by others. it's all just out of reach for her.

what we say: fandoms, much like every other social part of our life, should have political awareness and be a safe space for fans who belong to marginalised groups, as well as be cautious about media literacy
what tumblrinas hear: fandom is activism, fanfics are activism, shipping is activism, here's my fanart of a fictional white dude punching ICE agents like it's an art trend, i'm not racist because my oc is biracial
I have to defend overhated women characters with my life this isn’t a game to me anymore dog I’m so serious

If you were handcuffed to your girl blorbo with magical unbreakable handcuffs for 24h, would you be okay with this?
I trust her, I’ll be fine
I trust her, but it’ll be a stressful 24h
It depends on what kind of day we’re having

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO BE SAD ABOUT?
my yuris
fabricate is one of the most mean-spirited trials (fuck you easterman you meaniehead) but the neck ribbons on the arora mannequins look so cute. i think if she ever wore a suit she'd wear this type of ribbon with it (obvs would be purple or black not green) instead of her necklace. need to draw it now...
oh :) some sweet old people at my window :) how nice
all 4 new documents about amelia's hospital escape under the cut. spoilers obviously!!

unfortunately things that are popular are often not very good they're just marketable/accessible/comforting
I do wish we could make it a little more socially acceptable to wander the streets at night weeping inconsolably I feel like that would have a great catharsis factor for a lot of people
Absolutely. I think the reason this became taboo is likely because it was used in magic and then inevitably suppressed by the various churches and warlords that followed.
Irish witches would do this to curse people with social consequences. They'd let their hair down and go wander and weep or scream in front of people's door loudly about all the shit they fucking did so the whole town knows by morning and can point and stare. Then she'd go home and put her hair back up and go about her day like that didn't happen and not mention it again.
But the effectiveness of this type of curse was high in small tight-knit communities. If someone got cursed it's a big deal in gossip so now now the skeletons are out and everyone in town knows the accusations and the whole tawdry situation and can publicly debate their culpability. Pretty effective curse I'd say.
oh sure
