This time I translated Rita Lee’s song Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep), which is one of the biggest Brazilian queer anthems! This song talks about being the black sheep of your family, and going your own way to find yourself.
Rita Lee was one of the biggest icons of Brazilian rock music. She was open about having had relationships with women in the past, along with being one of the most outspoken artists against the military dictatorship. She was heavily censored and even arrested during the dictatorship.
Rita always spoke her mind — she frequently cussed during interviews, insulted other artists and politicians, and talked about sex and love in an open, irreverent fashion.
Rita passed in 2023 at the age of 75, and she is remembered as one of the freest spirits in Brazilian music.
