Tisza István: The Statesman Whose Death Marked the End of Old Hungary

Tisza István was not just a politician; he symbolized an entire political system — the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. His assassination in 1918 marked the collapse of the old order in Hungary.

Who Was Tisza István?

Born in 1861 into an influential Calvinist political family, Tisza grew up during the era of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. This system granted Hungary significant autonomy while remaining united with Austria under one emperor.

He served twice as Prime Minister of Hungary (1903–1905 and 1913–1917). Tisza was known for:
