i think you can't reduce bostonnick to a matter of Romantic Feelings or lack thereof —or, rather, i think the question is irrelevant. people don't feel the need to argue that boston was in love with ray or mew or chueam, even though he was clearly hurt and heartbroken after losing those friendships. so what does it matter whether he was In Love with nick or not? what does it matter if the issue was that boston isn't suited for romance, or that he isn't suited for monogamy, or both, or a fuck-up that has nothing to do with some inherent predisposition for relationships of any one kind? none of it changes the story being told, and that is a story in which nick was in fact The One That Got Away in every way that matters —they understood each other, they enjoyed each other's company, they cared for one another, they clicked in a way that boston clearly hasn't clicked with any other friend or hookup before, and boston wanted to keep that. what matters is that it hurt him to lose nick and it hurts him still. is it any less a heartbreak if he lost the best friend he'd ever had instead of the love of his life?
