Iβve studied a lot of Anglo-French medieval history, and England and France are so inextricably intertwined and such twin flames of each other that itβs genuinely impossible to imagine how one could have become the nation they are today without the other.
In 1066 France conquered England, fundamentally shaping the English language, distribution of land ownership, and system of governance, but in doing so handed the English kings a mandate to claim the French throne for the next 464 years. The kings of England only stopped claiming to be the rightful kings of France in 1801, when there was no longer a crown left to claim.
In the Later Middle Ages and after the English Civil War the English gained a reputation for being regicidal. Especially after the death of Richard II, the French perception was that βthe English kill their kingsβ and limited their divine authority [P. S. Lewis, Essays in Later Medieval French History, pp. 169-73]. But French thinkers like Voltaire later borrowed from British principles of limited monarchy and constitutionalism, fundamentally shaping the French Revolution and the creation of the French Republic in 1792.
After centuries of Anglo-French political and religious wars, at Dunkirk in 1940 thousands of French soldiers held the rearguard to allow the British troops to escape and were slaughtered. In 1944 Britain repaid the favour and thousands of British servicemen were killed during Operation Overlord to liberate France.
This is a tiny fraction of their shared history. Because at almost any point in English or French history over the past thousand years it is impossible to imagine one without the other.

The BEST trope is when a character tells another βletβs run away together, we can leave all of this behind and start a new life somewhereβ and gets rejected. And then the rest of the tragedy unfolds
them having sex "casually" every now and then just because why the fuck not? they were married for a long time, so they know each other's preferences in that area (not to mention that most of those preferences formed when they were still together) and they trust each other and they are good old friends who both tend to get lonely, so what's the harm?
but the problem is, both of them are still lowkey in love with the other, and having sex together again does NOT help to suppress that AT ALL, so they slowly but surely start to melt back into an actual romantic relationship β staying the night, staying for DAYS, having breakfasts and dinners, going out and showing to world meetings together (both 15 minutes late and antonio is carrying two coffees), to the point where someone (let's say arthur bc i like to think of him and roderich as pals, also background fruk/porteng lets goooo) has to call them out, like, guys, you are literally dating, why didn't you tell anyone that you are together again
and one of them has to man up and say "we are not together," even if it breaks both of their hearts, because they're NOT, then CAN'T, there's too much water under the bridge for them to ever consider dating, but at the same time if one of them just made a fucking move the other would be thrilled to start everything over, it's the matter of like 10 min conversation!
and i need at least five chapters of this shit. might as well write it myself who knows

γ βοΈ. γ they both prefer their coffee disgustingly sweet. like almond milk plus three sugars plus whipped cream sweet. antonio also tends to fall for fancy (and questionable) stuff like "spicy cinnamon mango latte with chili flakes" because he is adventurous like that. roderich never stops him from trying it because he is secretly curious and can have a sip from antonio's cup without spending his own money on something he might not end up liking (as if he ever actually pays for his coffee when he's out with antonio)
γ β°οΈ. γ roderich does not get out of the bed earlier than 10 am if he can help it. he's also not a morning person at all, and needs at least half an hour of just getting ready for the day in complete silence or with some calm classical music playing in the background. antonio is up and ready by 6 on most days, so when they are staying together he ends up being in charge of breakfast and morning coffee and answering urgent work emails for both of them. they also tend to have midday naps after dinner together
γ π. γ roderich still has most of the gifts that antonio give him during their marriage. some of them, which are more subtle and plausible for modern era, he wears, other are stored safely in jewel boxes. some of the items he sold to the museums back when the times were desperate. he has a complicated relationship with his wedding ring, though; he almost never wears it, not even on a chain, mostly because of the implications that used to come with it (he doesn't wear any of his wedding rings, actually), but it's still the most beloved possession of his. he likes to remind himself from time to time that, no matter how it turned out to be at the end, there was genuine love between him and antonio, and that's something that can't be erased by politics, wars and passage of time
γ π. γ antonio kept his ring on a chain after the divorce, and almost never took it off with the exception of battles (when he remembered to do it) and a short period of time during the war of austrian succession when roderich confronted him about wearing it. antonio is very superstitious about this ring and almost treats it as some kind of a lucky charm; which probably has something to do with the inherently religious implications which their marriage had in a first place. he entertains the idea of giving roderich a new ring every now and then, the one that would not be associated with an enforced union and political cage alongside with their happiest times, but brushes it off every single time (because deep down he knows that roderich's reaction will not be the same as he anticipates in his fantasies)
γ π . γ they own real estates together; mostly in europe, because roderich is not at all interested in visiting any of the americas, although they do technically have a house in california. the ones that are most frequently visited are an apartment in pozzuoli (30min car drive from naples) and a small villa in cΓ‘diz. they sure own a lot of coastal houses, which is somewhat funny considering that roderich is scared of big bodies of water and sea animals; let's just call it exposure therapy
γ π. γ one of the most valuable gifts antonio has ever given to roderich was a beautiful dappel grey andalusian mare, who roderich named marzipan. as it often happens with animals who belong to nations, she sort of inherited roderich's immortality/prolonged lifespan and has been by his side in most travels and battles over the years since 16th century; she had a bunch of offsprings and is now retired in spanish riding school in hofburg palace, where roderich still visits her frequently and takes her for a ride
γ πͺ». γ roderich's perfume is usually fresh, woody and floral, reminiscing of the alpine air and rainy flower gardens, although his going out fragrance may end up being more sour-sweet (cherry, plum). he is also one of those people who use way too much laundry detergent, so it always lingers heavily on his clothes, adding a distinct lavender base to it all. can't escape ink pen and coffee smell. antonio often opts for aquatic scents with heavy musky base and a hint of spice, like black pepper or ginger; if there is a citrus note, it's usually more on a bitter end rather than sweet. can sometimes smell a little bit like soil from working in the garden and like cigarettes if he's been smoking a lot lately. sun dries most of his clothes, so there's always a hint of this specific, almost rustic warm linen note to his appearance
