rip arthur kirkland you would've loved the concept of a junk journal
"A young Roderich who is earnestly head over heels for Antonio is such a cool dynamic, and in some ways makes him a narrative mirror of Arthur (these two men and their Iberian sweethearts)."
oh boy i have a million thoughts on this because i also headcanon that portugal was a menace in terms of flirting with roderich and trying to hit because roderich is pretty and it would piss off antonio real bad (even though in my hcs tonio never stops sleeping with romano).
he gossips to arthur about it so arthur knows the #tea.
sry if this doesn't fit with your hcs i saw roderich on the dash and went into a fugue state.
Anon I listed to head over heels by tears for fears while answering this to get me in the right frame of mind, and now I want an 80s dark fantasy style romance with Arthur or Roderich being all starry-eyed and pathetically yearning for their sparkly Iberian lovers. Thank you for the ask!
My slightly queer take on hetalia is that you don’t have to study history for very long to realise that in 2026 we are really quite prudish compared to people from the past. They were just very camp in many ways. And so much more openly romantic when you read things like letters sent to lovers. One of my favourite versions of Arthur, Roderich, Gabriel, and Antonio is the one where they’re gossiping, flirting outrageously, and flogging centuries-old horses with each other in a gay bar after a laborious European meeting. As they have been doing for years.
Portugal is definitely a big flirt when he wants to be, and he’s similar enough to Spain that it works on Austria. What can he say the man appreciates being wooed by a big, tanned Adonis (so does England let's be real).
And I reckon the nations are rarely monogamous (with a few exceptions). There are certain relationships they keep coming back to, but they’ve lived too long and too many lives to be truly singular. Arthur and Antonio might be a bit pouty when they’re getting spurned, but also, they won’t refuse an offer to sit in the cuck chair and watch Roderich and Gabriel wrestle horizontally.
oh noooo wouldn't it be horrible if I brought you a little engaus headcanon, about how Arthur was the first person whose touch didn't make post-divorce-Roderich's skin crawl 🫢🫣
you’ve charmed me, you’ve got the job.
I’m really intrigued by England and Austria’s relationship because I sort of headcanon Roderich as being one of the oldest nations in Europe up there with the Italies, and while Arthur isn’t young like Ludwig is, he’s on the younger end for Europe. There’s an experience difference in the sense that England, who is usually quite tricksy and cunning, tries to pull those tricks on Austria who immediately sees through them and is just haughtily like “are you done?”. And a slightly flummoxed England has to readjust his approach and come at him more honestly and only then can they find common ground. Essentially, I think Austria is cleverer than England realises and England is not as clever as he thinks he is lol.
Austria has it rough during the Hapsburg years and his split from Spain in the 1700s, and England at this period of European history is coming off his hooligan pirate years in the Caribbean and looking to establish himself as a major power in Europe. So, they’re both powerful but in a precarious spot. And they find in each other a potential ally and counterweight within European stately quadrille politics.
I didn't realize that I have sent you an ask through my other blog lol, sorry about that, anyways that was me and boy do i have some Thoughts
my Roderich is fairly young I'd say, he popped into existence near the end of 900s and his rise to power was carefully and skillfully orchestrated because you are so right, he is very clever, and he always knows what he wants; by the time he married Antonio (who had to be dragged into this affair kicking and screaming, but eventually it did become a love-match) his ambitions were already through the roof, and mostly when having to side with Arthur he saw him as a weapon against France first and foremost; it also didn't help that Antonio had a lot of nasty things to say about him, and Roderich at the time really valued his husband's opinion.
when divorce eventually happened, it left Roderich in a position where he desperately needed to grief and process the splitting, but he simply didn't have the time: everything everywhere always called for his attention, so he had to quickly shove down every complex emotion he had towards Antonio and their situation as a whole. during the war of Spanish succession he and Arthur hit it off much better then both of them expected, probably because game recognized game — I like to think that they are both dark horses in a lot of ways, but Roderich has a better way of hiding his outlaw nature (basically he is just a fake lying bitch).
the main difference between them is that I think Arthur never opens up and trusts someone fully, which led to quite a few fallouts with other nations (cough Portugal cough), while Roderich's craving for connection lead to him having a painful codependency with Antonio, which later backfired so bad that he never fully recovered. and from this perspective I think they might learn from each other and find some kind of balance between those two ends of a spectrum. Arthur definitely said something among the lines of "NEVER TRUST ANYONE 🫵🏻" at least once, and Roderich was like yeah that's exactly why nobody likes you. expect from me, I guess. I kind of like you.
on the account of intimacy, Roderich was really not doing well after Antonio, because their relationships were so tied to sex that after the split Roderich really struggled to trust anyone else in that department. if there were any occasional hook-ups, they only left him feeling worse, but for some reason, with Arthur, it felt safe. maybe it was something that remind him of Antonio — the smell of the sea, the eyes, the brute force of a man crawling through the dirt to become a king of the world — or maybe they just get each other on some spiritual level. maybe Roderich realizes that Arthur is not in a position where he can hurt him (personaly), who knows. but nevertheless, when they eventually fall into the bed together, it's also the first time Roderich doesn't flee afterwards like a scared animal.
This is super interesting and I love seeing how diverse people's interpretations can be within hetalia it's such a sandbox setting! It seems that Roderich being the brains of the pair and Arthur being the brute is the universal constant.
A young Roderich who is earnestly head over heels for Antonio is such a cool dynamic, and in some ways makes him a narrative mirror of Arthur (these two men and their Iberian sweethearts). Roderich and Arthur then finding some solace in each other is also very sweet, and they are definitely concert and bar buddies in the modern day.
now that you've said concert buddies, concert fic set in a 90s London would be so cool actually

apologies if you've already done one and i missed it but i'd love to see an england moodboard please!
I did not! here you go 🇬🇧
does spain like jazz?
I think he might! At least in my personal perception of him, I see Spain as a guy that likes any kind of music genre as long as it resonates with him. Maybe more fan of Spanish groups like Mecano, Hombres G and such... Traditional music and folk songs are a MUST, but anyways...He likes to dance!
5 pm thought: he's gay lol
11 pm thought: unfortunately the sad but logical reality is that he is straight and just kind of a weird freak and also a misogynist but it's still beautiful how romantic his obsession with his best friend is and how its psychosexual nature haunts all his creative work
2 am thought: he's gay and he wants to fuck men and i know this for a fact. and also a misogynist
Harsh light of dawn thought: he may very well be some flavour of queer, but he is so repressed and entrenched within his misogynistic space that he does not have the frame of reference to understand or allow himself to explore what he actually wants and will further bury himself within the system in his internalized homophobia
but, yeah, there's definitely something gay there and maybe a fictional version of him can explore that

I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-

roderich: can you stop calling me "little" and "goatling" already? I am a grown empire, you are embarrassing me!
meanwhile bavaria's pov:
leans into mic thanks to @fuimus-troes I'm having the brother feelings and I mean Rodri and Gerhardt (my Bavaria OC) 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Gerhardt still loves that little bratling despite everything it's the typical sibling dynamic "I hate the little shit but he's still my little shit so whatever"
Also I want a hilarious familial context when the Great Potato War / Plum War came into play and I mean when Prussia and Austria both poked their noses into Bavarian's succession crisis
Both of the contingents ended up stealing potatoes from the Bavarians I'm not even joking there was no reason for either of them to have butted in
Listen it started with Bavarians establishing the Eastern March and my HC had Gerhardt discover the little runt and was like wtf is this dirty mutt
Then when washed down it revealed a child and he was like WHOA am I a dad now?!???! King Otto @ him "no the fuck you're not I don't even trust you to care for my child you're a guardian at best"
For a while it lasted before the duchy gained independence from the Bavarian kingdom as their own little fief under the Babenberg there were the sweet and precious moments together 😔 even if it consisted of yet to be civilised widdwe Roderich biting Gerhardt every chance he gets
uk is sometimes good looking and suddenly derp
roderich being called various versions of the word "goatling" by his family (affectionate) and rivals (derogatory) is very important to me.

Regarding ur last post about englands relationships the way u describe fruk is sooo “I fear only one guy has ever truly understood me and I fucking hated that guy” core which is so correct and valid of u
You can’t die here. I will save you. Only I am allowed to kill you.
I’ve studied a lot of Anglo-French medieval history, and England and France are so inextricably intertwined and such twin flames of each other that it’s genuinely impossible to imagine how one could have become the nation they are today without the other.
In 1066 France conquered England, fundamentally shaping the English language, distribution of land ownership, and system of governance, but in doing so handed the English kings a mandate to claim the French throne for the next 464 years. The kings of England only stopped claiming to be the rightful kings of France in 1801, when there was no longer a crown left to claim.
In the Later Middle Ages and after the English Civil War the English gained a reputation for being regicidal. Especially after the death of Richard II, the French perception was that ‘the English kill their kings’ and limited their divine authority [P. S. Lewis, Essays in Later Medieval French History, pp. 169-73]. But French thinkers like Voltaire later borrowed from British principles of limited monarchy and constitutionalism, fundamentally shaping the French Revolution and the creation of the French Republic in 1792.
After centuries of Anglo-French political and religious wars, at Dunkirk in 1940 thousands of French soldiers held the rearguard to allow the British troops to escape and were slaughtered. In 1944 Britain repaid the favour and thousands of British servicemen were killed during Operation Overlord to liberate France.
This is a tiny fraction of their shared history. Because at almost any point in English or French history over the past thousand years it is impossible to imagine one without the other.
Pylades: I'll take care of you.
Orestes: It's rotten work.
Pylades: Not to me. Not if it's you.
(THANK YOU sm for the ask! I love talking about these stupid men pls always send more)
nyo lady-knight England who, during the Hundred Years War with France, becomes brutally single minded about killing Joan of Arc because she's slightly insane and jealous of nyo France's devotion to her. is this anything.
