i need to rant about something.
bit of backstory briefly: i am from the isle of man, in the british isles. we have a rather small population (around 85,000 in total), mostly white community however a lot more people are immigrating/emigrating here.
i am so tired of seeing racist comments everywhere on facebook. i saw a post earlier today made by a chinese gentleman that was inquiring about a missing woman that was over here on a work visa recently. i shared the post to our local page, i wasn’t expecting much to be honest as the police had been searching for over a year and found nothing, to my knowledge.
a man posts a comment: “what is happening to this island, it’s all going to shite” or something along those lines. i didn’t think a huge amount of it and assumed he was referring to the increasing violent crime over here.
someone then replies to his comment saying (and i’m c&p’ing this one directly from fb) “sadly it is. , they are letting anyone in here, time to shut the border, tighter immigration control. And stop allowing these people in. I was advised today that OPUL hotels here are bringing in loads of Pakistani people in, how true it is I dont know.” (for context, opul is a fairly new corporation over here that own hotels, coaches taxis etc)
i already dislike the woman who posted this comment because she’s been quite overtly racist in comment sections on this page before and i remember her because i called her out for using racist terminology. i don’t know why she felt comfortable commenting things like this on my post since i made it clear when i called her out last month that i don’t appreciate her views, but hey, everyone is entitled to an opinion.
then a boy who i KNOW is my age because i went to school with him said: “Doesn't surprise me, I've seen alot more Pakistanis walking around recently. The island is starting to become just as bad as the UK. It'll fill up alot sooner than the UK did with it being a small place.”
this entire mindset so many manx nationals have of “protect our island and our people from brown people” is bizarre to me. they get away with being outwardly racist on social media because they frame it like “we barely have enough resources for ourselves so why should we give what little we have to people who moved here?”
sometimes it makes it hard to determine the people who actually just care about our economy and the ones who say they do so they can spread their xenophobic garbage about.
i hate this place. i desperately want to move off this racist, classist, supercilious, piece-of-shit-rock, but much of the uk is the exact same. my partner’s family lives in edinburgh and i’m hoping to move there in the next few years. i know there will be similar people there but because it’s such a big place, hopefully i have less contact with these nasty, hateful people.
TL;DR: i’m sick of living in a small community where so many people are racist POS’s and frame it as ‘caring for our own people first’.
