I don’t think it will ever be something that is completely lost to her. We all have moments in our lives that define us or define who we end up becoming. We not always remember or think back on these moments, but they happened to us…and we will always have something that will remind us of that moment or at least the change that we made. Remember that at the beginning of the film Chihiro and her family are moving away from their older home and Chihiro is essentially losing all that she has known. She has her parents, but her life has been uprooted and the friends and experiences that she is used to are behind her. Essentially travelling to the Spirit world is a manifestation of this change as well. I believe that the tests she goes through in the Spirit world are teaching her and helping her with the tests and changes she is going to go through after the move.At the end of the film Chihiro is left with the hair tie that granny wove for her. Now, while this is a physical object, I think it represents the part of Chihiro that will never lose that experience or the change that she went through to help her deal with the large life changes she is about to embark on. She gained strength and, most importantly, she found herself again. She won’t lose that. She never will…she may not always remember what happened, but it did happen and it will stay with her forever.
