an homage and a digital shrine to the glory of suede's punk drummer ๐
I have three of these now, but I have no idea who the photographer was. The only clue I have is that the black and white one was saved from an archived version of Suede's official website from around 1997 and has a filename of 1994. So these are early Dog Man Star era. I'd love to find more from this shoot and its lovely mysterious and Gothic atmosphere and potentially find the photographer.

This photo is wrongly attributed here to Renaud Monfourny, as in reality it was taken byย Philippe Mazzoni forย LโIndic (French) magazine, issue 27, September 1996:
Inside the issue there are 2 more cool pics:
All of them were taken at Gare du Nord Paris railway station (where Paris-London Eurostar trains originate, btw) and here are some more from the same shoot:
Suede in France, photo by G. Roussel for Best (French) magazine, November 1996.
Itโs another split photo, laid-out across 2 pages and scanned here as such, but since Iโve never seen it anywhere else I thought Iโd post it like this anyway.
The caption, which is a quote from the interview, reads:ย
โOn n'en a rien ร foutre des clichรฉs du Rock! On n'essaie pas d'ศtre Led Zeppelin, on veut juste ศtre Suede!โ (โWe donโt give a damn about the clichรฉs of Rock! We are not trying to be Led Zeppelin, we just want to be Suede!)
Fair enough, boys! This is exactly what we want you to be, too.ย
Thereโs also this nice pic of Richard in the article:
A highly informative and previously unseen interview with Simon Gilbert, who rarely opens up about why he moved to Thailand and joined the incredible Thai band Futon.
From Hot Press Magazine, July 2006
By Ed Power
Following the implosion of Suede, drummer Simon Gilbert quit the rock'n'roll business and moved to Thailand, only to hook up with a pair of fellow ex-pats, making big music under the Futon banner.
Simon Gilbert sits in his back garden in Bangkok, watching lizards scrabble over the hot rocks, wondering how he blundered his way back to a career in pop music.
โAfter Suede, being in a band is the last thing I wanted to do,โ reminisces the drummer. โIn fact, I moved to Thailand specifically to get away from the music industry.โ
Gilbert, drummer for all of Suedeโs ten-year history, may have been ready to give up on music, but music wasn't ready to give up on him.
Six months after relocating to Thailand โ drawn, he says, by the โsleaze and the glamourโ โ he fell in with fellow ex-pat musicians, David Coker and DJ Bee (real name unknown) who, under the ephitet Futon, were investigating major-league melodies and stadium-rock choruses.
You can hear the result of their collaboration on Futonโs debut album, a juddering soft-rock extravaganza calledย Love Bites. Set next to Futonโs lascivious anthems, Suede sound like weedy indie nerds.
โAt the time I came upon Futon they didnโt have a drummer โ it was just a drum machine,โ reminisces Gilbert. โYou could already see they had potential. These are big, big songs, man. Songs that need, demand, to be heard on the radio.โ
Withย Love Bitesย vaulting to the top of the charts, Futon have blossomed into Thailandโs favourite rock act. This, says Gilbert, is a more modest boast than it might sounds.
โThe rock scene here really isnโt that big. Outside of Bangkok you wonโt sell any records. Even within Bangkok, we donโt really fit in because the music scene is very exploitative. Itโs all conveyor belt pop acts, so anything different is bound to stand out.โ
Gilbert says he harbours no ill memories over Suede, who, unlike most bands of their age and stature, were spared a messy death: on the cusp of irrelevance, the veteran Britrockers drifted apart in 2000.
โIt just felt right,โ says Gilbert of Suedeโs last days. โThereโs no use flogging a dead horse. If Iโm being honest, we were getting a little bit bored. It had started to feel like a routine.โ
Does he keep in contact with his former band mates?
โFunnily, I was never particularly close with anyone in Suede to begin with. Thereโs no bad blood, at all. But weโre not on the phone to each other every second weekend, either.โ
Having conquered Bangkok and the, er, surrounding villages, Futon now have their sights on global, or at least European, domination.
โWe donโt have a major label behind us, so itโs up to us to make this happen for ourselves,โ Gilbert reflects. โWhat makes it so interesting for me is that some of the guys in the band were Suede fans as kids. Now, weโre doing this together. Itโs totally crazy.โ

nice! no idea who took this exact photo but i assume itโs from the same press day as these photoshoots by Michel Linssenย and Paul Bergen. according to Getty Images & Paul Bergenโs website, his photos were taken on 20 August 1996 in Amsterdam.
โ(โฆ)As consolation hereโs a charming ole fotie from December 1997, and a show Suede sticksman Simon Gilbert and I did for London student radio, with DJ Hamish and Sam, and Melody Makerโs Daniel Booth, who snapped the piccie.
In the boozer beforehand I couldnโt resist asking Simon - a lovely chap, it must be said - if side two of Bowieโs Low was still, and I quote, his โfavourite shagging music.โ
The look on his Indian boyfriendโs face indicated that it was. I swear even he looked like he was turning red.โ
