"once in a blue moon" -an expression that many of us have heard but may not fully understand. The image above is of the blue moon tonight. Blue moons (which is when two full moons occur within one month) are rather rare; the last occurred in August of 2012, and the next will be January 2018. The color of the moon (unlike the blood moon I've posted about before) isn't blue as its name suggests, but a grayish hue similar to that of most full moons. This cycle just barely made blue moon status—last full moon was the first day of July & tonight's moon falls on the last day of July.

Every shot I've ever taken of this woman makes me feel exactly as I imagine Steve McCurry did when he first shot the "afghan girl," the image that eventually made front page of national geographic & launched his career ahead full speed. the moon: earth's only natural satellite. many nights it's the most prominent feature in the night sky. I've posted before regarding the 'blood moon' which although similar in appearance is different from this shot I took Tuesday night. the orange tint is not from a filter, but rather from wildfires in Canada and Alaska that have polluted the sky here in the Southeast United States. hoping to shoot Venus & Jupiter's near eclipsing orbits, I found myself in the field and out of luck due to the overcast from the wildfire's haze. to my delight, after a half hour the smoke started to clear and I was able to capture a time-lapse and this image of the strangely orange lunar surface.

da best part of wwdc 2015 was this slide.
