Iām going to say upfront that Iām a complete and utter snob when comes to headphones. Iām constantly on a quest to find the best sounding products on the market, to the point that itās almost become an obsession. So when I was asked to review a set of Bluetooth earphones from a manufacturer Iād never heard of I was dismissive to say the least, even more so when I found out they cost under Ā£15.
I already own most of the more expensive Bluetooth headphones on the market, including the Powerbeats 2, Monster iSport Superslim and the Jaybird X2ās, so I was expecting nothing from the SoundPeats Q800 as thereās no way these would be comparible to the more expensive headsets. Right?
Iām also going to admit that Iām not a fan of reading instructions, so when I first tried these I put them over my head like traditional headphones, just like an Alice Band. Turns out that youāre meant to wear them around your neckā¦I know, Iām a complete plank at times. Although this seemed a strange design at first, the benefits would soon become clear.
Earbud style earphones can be a royal pain in the backside at times, especially when you have stupid ear canals like I have. Hence the reason Iāve previously opted for earphones that hook over the ear like the Powerbeats or those that have in ear grippers (official technical term) like the Jaybird X2ās. I have never been able to keep any earbuds in my ears that didnāt have those supports, so I was convinced there was no way on earth these SoundPeats Q800 would stay in.
Back to that silly looking head band design. The main reason earbuds usually fall out of my ears is because of the weight (of the earphones, not my ears) especially in the case of the bulkier Bluetooth sets.
The genius of this design is that all the heavy stuff is stored within the neck band that is supported around the neck. This has enabled the actual earbuds to be extremely light and this means they donāt fall out of my earsā¦Happy days indeed!
Many of you will be gym bods and will want to know if these will stay in during your workouts and the obligatory Instagram selfies that follow. Well I have worn these during many rigorous situations; sprinting to the fridge, demolishing a mixed kebab, having a power nap and Iām glad to say they felt very secure throughout. If youād like to know if they are suitable for the gym, find someone that is a little less lazy. All I can tell you is that they stay secure throughout all my usual daily routines, travel, walking and riding my bike etc.
The SoundPeats Q800 connected very easily to all my devices and gives an audio prompt through the earphones to let you know when they are paired and how much charge the battery has. The bluetooth range a is very good and once fully charged I got in excess of 8 hours use at medium volume. Once the battery levels drop to under 25% you will once again get audio prompts letting you know that they require charging.
Now to the most important part, how they actually sound. This headset is not aimed at audiophiles, so nobody is expecting high end audio from them, but for a set of earphones that cost under Ā£15 they sound pretty damn impressive. They actually sound better than my Powerbeats 2 (that cost me Ā£175). They provide a pretty satisfying amount of bass, which may seem a little boomy for some peoples tastes as they lack the precision youād get from higher end products. I was impressed with the quality of the audio through all ranges and have not an an issue with distortion even with the volume up high.
In conclusion I was amazed by how good these were for a set of Ā£15 earphones, let alone the fact they are Bluetooth. Like I mentioned before, you have to keep the price in mind when managing your expectations, but Iām sure most people would be impressed with the sound quality from this budget product. I now use them for general use over my more expensive alternatives due to the comfort and the amount use you can get off a full charge.
