Last time: Lex and his family start to plan how to get Lilith away from Lord Sterling. They don't know where he is located, and they will need allies if they are going to pull this off.
Now:
The weeks following Lexâs return to Willow Creek were a whirlwind of activity as the Goth family set about contacting other Courts and arranging meeting with not only them, but members of their own court and some of the more prominent clans outside of the Courtâs territories.
Lex worked tirelessly, obsessively. There was so much to do before they would be able to go rescue Lilith, but every day that passed without results was one more she had to spend with Lord Sterling. It made his stomach churn with growing distress.
Then Mordred disappeared.
Lex was used to Mordred blinking in and out, he was a Grimraven, so that wasnât all that unusual. But Mordred didnât just blink out like he usually would. There was no green flash that proceeded him vanishing, no rustle of feathers as he took off from his perch.
Mordred was there one moment, and the next he was gone. Lex scrambled to his feet, rushing to the window hoping he had just missed the raven leaving.
But no, there was no sight of him outside either.
Lex glanced back at Ghast, who was laying on the bed watching him. The fox didnât seem upset in anyway, so Lex was forced to assume that whatever had just happened it wasnât bad and Mordred would return.
He didnât even want to think about how he would explain to Lilith that he had lost one of her companions while she was imprisoned in Lord Sterlingâs court.
Lex buried himself back into his work, heading to the library in the upper level of the castle to do some research that would hopefully get his mind off it. Ghast followed after him, tail hung low and ears pinned down.
The little fox had been struggling without Lilith around. Lex was doing his best to take care of him, but it was clear that he was depressed. He stuck close to Lexâ side, as if afraid that he might disappear on him too.
Lex worked himself into exhaustion. Returning to his room hours later only to find Mordred sitting on his perch as if nothing had happened.
The grimraven perked up when he entered the tower, hopping down onto Lexâ table where a folded piece of paper sat.
âDearest Lex,
Iâm so glad Mordred was able to find me. Iâve been wanting to contact you but had no way of doing so without alerting him of where I am.
I did manage to escape from Lord Sterling and Iâm hiding somewhere he canât follow. I know it wont be much of a relief to know, but I am currently hiding out in the Fae Wilde. (the paper crumpled in Lexâ fist when he read that, the elated relief of hearing that Lilith had escaped was quickly replaced by alarm.)
With all my heart,
LD
Lex wasted no time, he picked up Ghast and flew down to the throne room with Mordred following close behind. His parents were currently getting ready to hold Court for the night but this was far more important.
âI just got a letter from Lilith!â He exclaimed shoving the paper at his father. âIt says she is out of Lord Sterlingâs hands, but sheâs still in danger. I have to go to her!â
Before he could do anything drastic, Bella grabbed his arm and held him in place while his father read the letter. Lex anxiously watched as the older vampire started pacing.
âThe fae realm.â He hummed, almost to himself. âAnd do you even know where in the fae realm she is or would you be going in blind?â Mortimer asked.
âMordred can show me, he knows where she is now.â Lex explained, eager to get going. He tried to pull away again, but his mother refused to release him. He hissed at her in annoyance, she just raised an unimpressed eyebrow at him. Lex cringed into himself, that had been uncalled for on his part.
âManners, Alexander.â His father chastised, and Lex finally stopped fighting. âNow, I know you want to go to her, but that is inadvisable for several reasons. First is that Lilith is correct, as long as she stays in the fae realm Lord Sterling will not follow even if he knows her exact location. We are on only slightly better standing with the Queens, and trespassing into their realm without explicit permission would at the least cause an international incident, but could end with you either imprisoned by the queens or killed outright. Your presence would also draw the queenâs attention to Lilith and that would be disastrous for her as well.â
âI canât just do nothing!â Lex cried.
âWe wont do nothing, Alexander.â Bella said, her hand moving up to his shoulder, âWe will do what we have been doing with the other Vampire Courts, send a human delegate into the fae realm to speak to the queens on our behalf and try to set up a meeting. I know you do not like it, Alexander, but this is the best course of action, for you and for Lilith. In the mean time, why donât you write back to her. Even if you cannot be with her physically, you can still offer her comfort and support.â
Last time: Lilith bonds with Mordred, making him her familiar and bringing him to her side. She felt something watching her and ran home.
Now:
The following days were rough for Lilith. Every time she stepped foot outside her house she felt like she was being watched. Followed. She was being stalked by some unseen force and it had her on edge.
She almost didnât want to leave the house anymore. But she knew she couldnât hide away forever, she would just have to stay alert to her surroundings at all times. Which wasnât a bad thing in a realm that was designed to be her undoing.
It all came to a head when Lilith was out foraging for new flowers, wanting to expand her selection. Mordred twisted through the trees, sharp avian eyes scanning the forest around them. She had just crouched down in front of a purple flower she had never seen before when Mordred came swooping in, tugging at her clothes as he passed and letting out a sharp cry of warning.
Lilith was on her feet in a split second, spinning around. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end as she saw the dark shape in the trees. She had to suppress the urge to hiss in warning (Iâm human, just a normal everyday human with no fangs, and no magic. Just a normal human woman.) she chanted in her head.
After a few tense moments the figure stepped forwards, moonlight spilling down a tall elegant woman in a long dark dress. A dark gossamer material framed her eyes, like a mask that had grown out of her face. She was stunningly beautiful in a way that sent a cold shiver of pure fear down Lilith's spine. And on her head, supported by the intricate twists of her hair sat what was unmistakably a crown.
The woman smiled at her, thin black lips curling up to reveal a mouthful of needles. Lilithâs breath caught in her throat, undead heart racing in her chest - what an uncomfortably unnatural feeling she hadnât been aware she could still experience. She wanted to run, flee the area and never return, but her body refused to cooperate. Lilith was prey, and the being standing before her was her hunter.
âWhen my guards informed me that we had a visitor squatting in the crumbling remains of an old castle I didnât fully believe them. Humans donât normally trespass into my realm, much less without explicit permission from either me or my sister.â
âI-Iâm sorry, I didnât mean to-â Lilith stuttered, dipping into a bow and hoping it would be enough to pacify the fae, words failing her.
The womanâs smile thinned dangerously and she stepped closer and Lilith could see just how tall the woman actually was, standing more than a foot taller than even Lex. âYou didn't mean to what? Trespass? Insult us? Peek our curiosity? Get caught? You have managed to do all four; that is quite the feat little one. But I digress. I am the Unseelie queen of the Faerealm, The Nightshade.â
Lilith rose out of the bow slowly, eyes wide as the woman introduced herself, âOh! Um, Iâm Lilith. Lilith Darling.â She said quickly, not wanting to offend the fae queen further. The moment the words slipped from her lips she knew she had fucked up.
She slapped a hand over her mouth, but it was far too late. A slow malicious smile spread over the Nightshades face, transforming it into something terrifyingly Other. Lilith was no stranger to the horrific and monstrous. She was a monster herself. But there was something so otherworldly and unsettling about the Unseelie queen.
âOh, and you just became so much more interesting, pet. A human is one thing, but a vampire and a magic one at that? In my forest? You must be either very brave, or very stupid.â Lilith swallowed hard. She knew giving your name to a fae was bad but the books she had read on the matter had never explained why beyond a vague âthey own itâ. Did owning Lilithâs name somehow tell the woman everything about her?
The Nightshade paused, a thoughtful look in her eyes as she seemed to stare right through the horrified girl, âNo not brave, or stupid...but desperate. Curiouser and Curiouser.â The Nightshade focused back on Lilith, âNow, run along home, daylight is almost upon you.â She said with thinly veiled amusement.
Lilith got the distinct impression that the woman would find it entertaining if she didnât make it home in time. Lilith took the dismissal for what it was and fled back to the sanctuary of her little hole in the ground.
It would be some hours later before her instincts calmed and she was able to tend to her small garden.
Then: Lilith settled into her new home. She started a garden and began to learn flower arranging to make a little money.
Now:
Lilith spent the next few days keeping as low a profile as she could. She did not want to draw any attention to her or where she was staying. Luckily the place she picked to live seemed to be out of the way for most fae, but she did see them flitting about every so often (usually in their small forms).
It was going well, but Lilith was lonely. The only time she ever interacted with people was when she was in town selling her flowers.
She missed Ghast. She missed Mordred. She missed Cassie, and Greta, and Honey, and Tae and all the rest of her friends. But most of all, she missed Lex.
Every time she closed her eyes she would see his face. She caught herself turning to say something to him only for him to not be there.
She fought to keep her mood up, but she had never been a cheery girl in the first place and depression quickly set in.
About an hour before dawn, after Lilith had sold all her flowers and done some foraging, she found herself a nice patch of flowers under the thin blue moonlight and sat down to meditate on her magic for a little while before returning to the empty rubble she called home.
It was harder than usual for her to focus. She kept getting lost in her emotions, memories flooding her and dragging her deeper and deeper into her loneliness. Silent tears filled her eyes and slid down her cheeks unnoticed.
A sudden burst of magic jerked her out of her trance and Lilith shot to her feet, spinning around defensively.
Hovering a short distance from her, dark feathers glinting like an oil-slick in the moonlight, was Mordred.
Lilithâs breath caught in her throat, and she desperately looked for Lex or Ghast. If Mordred was here, then they had to be too!
Only, there was no one. Just her, and Mordred.
Lilith pulled herself together, and held out her arm for her feathered friend. The raven gratefully landed, climbing up to her shoulder and starting to groom her hair. Lilith giggled, feeling lighter than she had in days. âItâs good to see you too old friend. But how did you get here?â
As if in answer to her question she felt something tugging at her magic. Startled she looked inward, examining the feeling. A line of magic was branching out from her font and reaching to...to Mordred.
A familiar. Mordred had bonded himself to her. There was no place she could go that he would not be able to follow her.
Before she could really celebrate this unexpected development she felt the creeping sensation of eyes watching her. It raised the hair on the back of Lilithâs neck, and ever fiber of her being screamed danger.
Lilith didnât think twice. Running home and locking the door behind her. Whatever that was she had no interest in it.
Last Time: Lilith escaped Lord Sterling and hid in the fae realm, hoping he would not follow her there. She spent the day in a tree scoping out somewhere to live and spotted an old ruin in the distance.
Now:
The ruins Lilith had seen from the tree were better than she could have ever dreamed they would be. It wasnât much to look at, at first glance. Just some crumbling brick walls. But there was a lower level carved into the ground below it. She didnât bother with the stairs just flew right in. There was a fountain with a statue in the center of the courtyard and arches leading into a covered veranda that circled one half of the courtyard.
The building itself was empty save a thick layer of dust and random scraps of wood that might have been furniture at one point but had deteriorated over time.
By then Lilith was not only exhausted but starving as well. She had brought a couple plasma fruits with her, butt she knew it would be wise to plant them so she would have more in the furture since she had no idea if they even grew in this location naturally.
She decided that she would eat one, and plant the other. Once that was done Lilith curled up in a corner of her new home and fell into a deep sleep.
It was still dark when Lilith woke up again, but the position of the moon in the sky told her she must have slept through the entire day.
She spent some time cleaning up the dust and taking all the broken pieces of furniture outside to the veranda, before tending to her single plant garden. Lilith wasnât quite sure what she should do now. She had always made money through her music in one form or another but that would draw attention to her so she was hesitant to do so now maybe later after she was more established in the area.
Lilith was good at gardening and she had seen a market in the village earlier so maybe she could set up a little farm and try to make money that way. That seemed like a fairly good idea to her, and, really, who would ever think the random farmer living in the fae realm was a vampire. It was a ridiculous idea and maybe that would be enough to keep her away from any suspicious eyes.
The only problem with that was she only had the one plasma fruit plant and she doubted anyone in this part of the world would be interested in buying those. So she would need to find another way to get her garden up and running.
Lilith had studied a little bit about foraging. She wasnât very good at it, but it was definitely a place to start.
She spent the night gathering as many things as she could from the forest around her. Just as the moon was starting to disappear behind the trees Lilith found something unexpected. It was an old sofa someone had abandoned just outside of Innisgreen.
This would be much better to sleep on than the hard stone ground so Lilith spent the remaining cover of night dragging the sofa back to her ruins. With nothing else to do while the sun was up Lilith took some of the old wood she had salvaged from the building and used it to make some rough plant beds in the shelter of the corridor surrounding the courtyard. When night fell she gathered some soil from the land around her ruins and transplanted her plasma fruit plant into one of the planters below.
Lilith had been planning to make a proper farm and sell produce to the villagers, but all she had been able to forage were flowers and a couple strange magical plants she had found in her exploration. Maybe she would shift her plans and open a flower shop. She didnât have any experience with flower arranging but how hard could it be?
She spent the rest of the night gathering more flowers from the forest around her and when dawn came she retreated back underground to start her new business.
She started by ripping strips of fabric off her skirt and tying the flowers into small bouquets. At around six in the evening Lilith decided that it was dark enough that she would be safe to venture outside if she kept her cloak on and her hood up. So she took her flowers into the town to sell.
By the time night had truly set in she had gathered enough coin from the sympathetic villagers to buy some seeds from the general store. It wasn't much, but she would make it work.

Last Time: Lilith was finally able to escape from Lord Sterling's castle.
Now:
Lilith only have a vague outline of a plan when she left Forgotten Hollow. She was able to use her magic to trigger the rune circle that Lord Sterling had used to take her to the magic realm...only she wasnât going to the magic realm.
Lilith needed to go somewhere he would never think to look. Somewhere he would never dare to follow her into.
One option would be werewolf territory, but Lilith wasnât sure she was up to that after her last few interactions with a werewolf.
The other option would be the faewilde. She knew that faeries didnât like vampires. She hadnât dug too deeply into that history, but she figured it wouldnât matter. And faeries werenât just hostile, they had the ability to drain a vampires essence and turn them human...only vampires arenât alive anymore, so the result is, ultimately, death.
Was it frightening to think about? Yes. But she would rather that then be under Lord Sterlingâs thumb for the rest of eternity. And hopefully if she was able to keep a low profile the faeries would never even realize she was there...or at least not realize what she was.
She had been practicing her human disguise and she thinks she is getting pretty good at it, and with the added security of a spell that would mask her vampirism from magical creatures she thought that it just might work.
Lilith had never been to Innisgreen before. It was in one word: Magical. Innisgreen itself was a small port town on the Green islands, situated right outside of the veil separating the faewilde and the mortal realm.
Magic from the faewilde seeped out, traces of it glittering on the wind or shimmering on the surface of an object.
The veil wasnât a metaphorical thing either, it was a physical...wall would be the most fitting word Lilith would think of. It was a gleaming iridescent sheet of pure magic curling across the island. Lilith knew that this portal was large enough to cover the remainder of the Green Isles. She also knew that this veil only led into a very small portion of the Faewilde.
She wasnât sure exactly how it worked, magic she supposed.
A heavy snowstorm greeted her as she wandered the streets of Innisgreen, feeling thankful that she didnât suffer from the cold the way she did when she was human. And the storm itself was a blessing in disguise since it managed to block out the rising sun.
Her timing could have been better, she supposed. But she was here now.
The next step Lilith would need to take was figuring out where she would be staying while she was here. She didnât have any money, so renting an apartment was out of the question. And she wasnât sure staying in Innisgreen was the right choice anyway. While it was on the doorstep of the Faewilde, it wasnât close enough for Lilithâs comfort.
The vampire left the shelter of the town and headed up into the hills. She could see a forest in the distance, peppered with large mushrooms the size of trees. Sheâd never seen anything like it, and they let off a gentle blue glow beckoning Lilith into the cover of the trees.
She almost didnât notice the Veil when she came upon it, too busy staring up into the branches of the ancient trees that almost seemed to hum with power.
Lilith did notice the abrupt shift in the weather when she crossed that barrier. One minute it was snowing, the rising sun a dim glow through the grey clouds and the next she was smacked unceremoniously in the face by a happy little sunbeam.
Lilith hissed, shielding her face against the light before shifting into her bat form and taking shelter in one of the trees. She hid in a puff of mint green leaves, clinging to the silvery branch to dangle upside down.
There wasnât much she could do but wait. Exhaustion tugged at her, but Lilith resisted. She was not safe here. If one of the leaves shifted the sun would catch her unaware, or she could be ambushed by a faerie. And there was no telling what other dangers lurked inside a magical realm ruled over by the fae.
No. It would be better if she held out on sleeping until she found herself a place to stay where she was sure she would be safe.
The leaf pile Lilith had found turned out to be a fairy good hiding place. She only needed to rearrange a few leaves if the sun started to peak inside. And there were several places where the leaves parted just enough for her to look around.
She could see all sorts of fae creatures milling around below her, going about their day, completely unaware of the vampire lurking in the tree. She also got a pretty good lay of the land, and she was very keen on a ruined building she could see in the distance.
It wouldnât be anything grand, and Lilith was aware that she would be starting over from scratch. But that was okay. She was quite used turning empty abandoned buildings into a comfortable home.
Last time: After Lilith was kidnapped by Lord Sterling Lex returned to his family seeking their aide.
Now:
After their reunion in the throne room the Goth family retreated to the family sitting room. Mortimer headed to the bar to make drinks for everyone while everyone else took a seat on one of the sofas.
Ghast followed Lex up the stairs slowly, ears drooping and tail hung low. Lex, leaned down to scoop up the fox before settling on the sofa. Ghast whimpered softly but curled up on his lap.
The room was mostly silent while Mortimer prepared their drinks, the sound of glasses clinking and the murmur of Lexâs sister and mother conversing on their sofa providing a subdued backdrop to Lexâs racing thoughts.
He felt restless, like sitting here and talking was the worst possible thing he could be doing right now. Even if he knew it was the best, and possibly only, choice he had, all his instincts screamed he needed to be out there, looking for her.
The last moments he saw her kept repeating in his head: The shock of the blade skewering him as he fell to the ground. Looking across the street and seeing Lilithâs agonized expression as she fought to reach him.
That image of her screaming his name would forever be etched into his soul. A stark reminder of how he had failed her.
His father pushing a glass of blood into his hand pulled him out of his memories. Lex wasnât very thirsty, simply holding the drink in his hand and idly watching as Ghast took interest. Lex allowed the fox to lap at the liquid, ignoring his motherâs displeased expression.
Mortimer sighed and Lex saw him making a second glass and putting it aside for him later. âYou said they took her?â His father began, getting straight to the point. Lex knew there would be more questions about Lilith later, and was grateful for his father focusing on the more important things.
âYes. We were on our way here after graduation. I was going to introduce her to you, but we were ambushed outside the dorm.â Lex explained.
âHow many were there?â Bella asked, she was in charge of Willow Creekâs security so it was only natural that she take the lead in these sorts of matters.
âFive, I think.â Lex said, Mortimer arched an eyebrow and even Bella looked baffled. Lex had been training with the sword since he was a child, Bella had taught him herself. It was clear that his parents were surprised five people had been able to overpower him. âThey had a Master with them, and a werewolf.â He admitted.
The two eldest Gothâs tensed at that, sharing an alarmed look between the two of them.
Cassandra was staring into her drink thoughtfully, watching the crimson liquid swirl around the bottom of the glass. âLilith has had werewolf problems for a while. But not just werewolf, sheâs also had hunters trailing her. And she has had visits from two other Grandmasters.â
Mortimerâs attention snapped to her in less than a heartbeat, âWho?â
âLord Sterling and Madam Bell.â
Mortimer cursed under his breath and started pacing, âThis complicates matters. Either one could be behind this.â
âIt was Lord Sterling.â Lex told them.
His father stopped pacing. âYou are certain?â Lex nodded. âElaborate.â
Lex looked down at the small creature in his lap, Ghast had finished off the drink and appeared to be sleeping now. He ran a hand over the animals head, scratching behind his ear softly as he thought of what to say. âThe Master said as much. Implied that she was going to tell him I was the one keeping Lilith from him.â
âAnd why would that matter to Lord Sterling?â Bella asked shrewdly.
âBecause Lord Sterling had forced a Sire bond on Lilith. When I found out I took her with me to the academe hoping to hide her away while we figured out how to break that bond.â That feeling of failure settled over him again, and Lexâs shoulders slumped under the weight of it.
Bella stood and crossed to her husband, the two of them talking low and fast amongst themselves, Lex didnât bother trying to listen, once again lost in his memories and crushed under his failures. He should have brought Lilith directly here. Why did he think he could hide her all on his own? He should have told his parents immediately.
The sofa dipped next to him, his sister pulling him against her. Lex had grown a lot since he last saw her, and she felt tiny next to him, but he sank into her overwhelmed. This whole mess was his fault.
After a short while his mother joined them, Lex sandwiched between the two of them. It was a comfort he hadnât felt since he was small.
âWe will figure this out, darling.â His mother said as she brushed his hair away from his face. âThis situation may be complicated. But not impossible.â
âYour mother is correct. Unfortunately the hardest part will be finding her.â Lex looked up at him where he was leaning back against the bar. âLord Sterlingâs territory is an unknown. We know he has quite a large territory but he has managed to keep it hidden for as long as he has been a Grandmaster.â
âAnd while we will always fight by your side, allyâs would be good to have backing us.â His mother put in.
Lex relaxed as a plan finally started to form.
They would get Lilith back, and Lex would never let her go again.
Last Time: Lilith makes a new ally in Grandmaster Straud.
Now:
The plan was simple. Lilith would tie Straudâs soul to the mortal realm so he could spend his afterlife tormenting the man who had murdered him and taken his kingdom. And he would teach her how to hide from not only Sterling, but Lady Crystalâs magic as well.
âDo you have magic?â Lilith had asked curiously during their first lesson.
He chuckled. âOh, certainly not. But I knew someone, once, who did.â He got lost in his memories for several minutes after that before shaking his head, âI may not have any practical experience, but what I do know should be enough for you to pick up on.â
The next several weeks were exhausting. Lilith would spend hours every day âlearningâ from Lady Crystal. Their sessions were little more than an excuse for Lady Crystal to abuse Lilith. Lilith got the distinct impression that Lady Crystal was jealous of her. Jealous of how much attention Lord Sterling was showering Lilith with. Jealous of Lord Sterlingâs seeming obsession with the younger vampire.
Lilith would have gladly let her have it all. Lord Sterlingâs attention made her skin crawl.
Any spare moment Lilith had was spent in that hidden room beneath her tower actually learning from Grandmaster Straud.
âGood, I think you have it.â Straud said, inspecting the warding runes she had painted around the room. âThis should be enough to keep prying eyes away from your home. Youâll still have to be careful when leaving the safety of the runes, but it should help.â Lilith practically glowed with pride.
âNow.â He continued, âYou will want to go somewhere he would never think to look for you.â
Lilith deflated. She had, of course, been planning to find Lex but that would be the first place Sterling looked. She cast her mind out for a location she thought would work. âI think I know where.â She said, it was risky, of course. But she would gladly take that risk if it meant escaping from Sterlingâs grasp.
âGood.â Straud said, turning to look at her intently, âAs for this bastardized sire bond you have with him, there is one way you can get rid of it. It would have to be overridden by another Sire bond. But not just anyone can override it.â He warned.
âIt would have to be a Grandmaster.â She realized.
âNot necessarily.â Straud said as he fixed the cuffs of his sleeves, âI would actually suggest finding your Sireâs sire, or someone else from his line. Sterlingâs claim would shatter, no matter how strong he is.â
âOh.â Lilith said, feeling what little hope she had fizzle out. She barely remembered her Sire. Didnât even remember his name, really. How was she supposed to find his Sire?
But that was a task for another day.
âNow, are you ready for your grand exit?â Grandmaster Straud said with a mischievous smirk. She nodded. âExcellent. Iâll go distract them. Good luck, little one.â
Lilith didnât know what the ghost was planning to do, other than whatever it was would be big enough to cover her escape. Hopefully by the time that whole crisis was over Lilith would be long gone and they would not be able to find even a trace of where she went.
Last Time: Lilith found a hidden room under her tower. In that room was the remains of an ancient vampire.
Now:
Lilith had never actually performed a sĂŠance before. She was a licensed paranormal investigator but she hadnât been able to put that skill to use yet.
This sĂŠance was going to be a bit different than a normal sĂŠance, she figured it would be easier to do with her magic so she had to alter the ritual a little but she didnât think it would cause any problems.
Lilith closed her eyes and felt her magic surge excitedly, the circle of blood on the floor bubbled and seethed as her magic fed on it. She felt the ground under her feet fall away as her magic found the thin thread connecting Grandmaster Straudâs spirit with his remains.
She gave the bond a gentle tug, urging the vampire to return to the living realm. He ignored her at first, but Lilith was insistent, and eventually her patience paid off.
Lilith felt a surge of annoyed acceptance down the bond.
When she opened her eyes again a tall thin spectral man stood before her, staring up at her with intrigue. âYou were not who I was expecting to meet, Childe.â He commented as he studied her. âI was not aware that whelp had a new toy to play with.â
Lilith allowed her magic to fade into her blood again, dropping from the air and landing silently before Straud. âIâm not Sterlingâs plaything.â She said, spitting his name with venom.
The ghost arched an eyebrow, âYou are here, are you not.â
Lilith glanced away, âNot because I want to be.â
âThen why havenât you left?â
âI canât.â Lilith said, despair creeping into her voice, âHe has some sort of weird power over me, it hurts when I do something he doesnât like.â
Sraudâs ghost hummed thoughtfully, âHe is your sire then?â
âNo!â Lilith snapped offended, âMy sire is dead. I may not have known him for long, but I know that what I have with Sterling is a twisted parody of what I had with him.â
âI see.â Straud walked a slow circle around Lilith, who didnât move to follow him. One wrong move could break the connection too soon and she wasnât ready for this conversation to end. âI take it you would like out of this arrangement?â
âI do, but it seemed impossible.â
âNothing is impossible, Childe. Especially when you have magic at your fingertips.â He returned to his place in front of Lilith, behind his urn. âI can help you.â He offered.
âReally?â She asked dubiously, âWhat is in it for you?â
A slow, vicious smile spread over his face and she got the first glimpse at his teeth. Not only did he have fangs, but every single one of his teeth were sharp as a needle. âRevenge.â
Last time: Lilith had her first magic lesson. It did not go well.
Now:
The next few days consisted of much the same. Lilith spent most of her time in the basement with Lady Crystal learning her magic then she would retreat to her tower until she was required for the evening meal with Lord Sterling.
She spent as little time as possible with her captors, trying to lose herself in her music and think of a way out of this horrible situation. But every escape plan was discarded for the same reasons. There was no way she would be able to get out of Forgotten Hollow Without Lord Sterling catching her.
Lord Sterling had spared no expense in outfitting the tower to cater to Lilithâs preferences. There were plant pots in her bedroom, music in her sitting room. A shrine for tarot on the second floor, and the bottom of the tower held a candle making station.
Feeling despondent, Lilith flew down to the first floor to make some scented candles. As she was waiting for the wax to dry enough for her to start molding it she looked around the small room and her eyes caught on a tall floor to ceiling bookshelf set into the wall.
Lilith stared at it curiously.
There was no possible way.
She abandoned her candle and went to investigate. She had lived in several locations with hidden passages and thought she could spot them pretty well. It wasnât long until she found the book she was looking for and triggered the mechanism that shifted the bookcase out of the way. Behind it was a small room with a staircase down.
Lilith spared no time in dropping down into whatever room lay below her tower. Could it have been dangerous? Quite possibly, but at this point Lilith really didnât care.
The room she was in was dark, but Lilith had no trouble seeing. The room was filled with old boxes, crates, and several ancient looking coffins. Unlit candles sat throughout the room, melted wax pooling at their bases. The whole room was covered in a thick layer of dust. Obviously no one had been in this room in a very very long time.
Curiosity got the better of her and Lilith started rummaging through the different boxes. She found a few loose tarot cards but nothing else really stood out to herâŚ.until she spotted a urn tucked into a corner of the room.
She knelt down in front of it and wiped the dust away to read the epitaph. It was plain and Simple: Vladislaus Straud.
Lilith knew that name. Cassie viewed him as some sort of Vampire superstar. And Lilith had seen him mentioned in her studies numerous times. He was the eldest living vampire...or so she had thought. It was a curious thing and she wondered why his remains were here and not somewhere more fitting for someone of his stature.
Lilith glanced back at the candles scattered around the room.
...she could just ask himâŚ
A few minutes later and Lilith was standing in the middle of a circle of candles, some she had sourced from this tomb and other she had crafted herself over the days she had been trapped in this horrible place. Inside the layer of candles was a painted circle of blood (her own), and sitting in a place of honor at the head of the circle was Straudâs urn.

Previously: Lilith has unlocked her powers and Lord Sterling has ordered her to be Lady Crystalâs Mentee. She is not happy about it.
Now:
Lady Crystal spun on her heel and breezed passed Lilith, the clack of her heels loud in the otherwise silent room. âFollow me.â She ordered when Lilith didnât move from her spot, glaring up at Lord Sterling.
Lord Sterling narrowed his eyes at Lilith in warning. A shot of fear ran through her and she reluctantly turned to follow.
Lady Crystal led Lilith to a small door in the hallway that hid a staircase heading down into a dark basement. Lilith hesitated, she wasnât afraid of the dark, but she was wary of following Lexâs murderer down into a secluded underground room.
âDonât dawdle.â Lady Crystal snapped at her from the bottom of the stairs. Lilith, not wanting to risk angering her or Lord Sterling further (who knows what they would do to her) she shifted into her bat form and flew down to where her new mentor was waiting for her.
There were two main rooms of the basement that she could see, one was filled with nectar bottles and the other was a large spacious room with nothing but an old beat up training dummy on the far side of the room. That was where Lady Crystal directed Lilith to go.
âYou will do everything I say promptly and precisely.â The older woman said, striding into the room and standing with her back against the wall staring daggers into Lilith, the bright blue glow the only thing she could make out behind the womanâs feathered mask. âFailure to follow my instructions will result in immediate punishment. Magic is a dangerous force all on itâs own, but when wielded by a vampire itâs deadly. Not just to your target, but for you as well should you miss step.â
Deadly? Lilith could die using this magic Lord Sterling forced onto her? The more she learned the less she wanted to use it. But, as she was quickly learning, she wasnât being given a choice. When Lord Sterling said something it was law.
He said jump, and Lilith would find herself saying âhow highâ completely against her own will.
âMost magic users are able to take the magic from their surroundings, but vampires cannot access this well-spring. So we must use another.â Lady Crystal went on, heedless of Lilithâs growing alarm. âYour magic will be fueled by blood, naturally. How you get that blood is up to you, a vial you keep in your pocket, a random man on the street, or slicing into your own flesh, it matters not.â
Well, that would be easy enough, at least.
Lady Crystal produced a bottle of nectar from the other room and tossed it at Lilith. âWhile this would not be sufficient for a proper spell, you donât know any so this will do for now.â
Lilith scrambled to catch the bottle before it shattered on the floor, clutching it to her chest for one breathless moment before popping the cork.
Lady Crystal held out her hand and the plasma nectar rose from the bottle in a thin stream which curled around itself in the air in constant motion. âIt should be like feeding, a natural instinct. You have used your vampire powers for long enough that this should not be difficult. Reach out, not with your vampire powers but with the magic flowing through your veins.â
Was that what the fire coursing inside her was? Her magic.
Lady Crystal returned the nectar to the bottle, and Lilith placed it on the floor at her feet. Then she closed her eyes and forced herself to concentrate on that feeling. The burning inside her that threatened to consume her.
âIt is your magic. Do not let yourself get lost in it.â Lady Crystalâs voice filtered into her awareness, âIt is yours to use, yours to command. Do not let it control you.â
Lady Crystal was right, once she knew what she was looking for it was easy. She breathed in, feeling the magic burn through her and gather in the tips of her fingers. Lilith opened her eyes and looked down at the glass.
She could feel it. The blood in the nectar. The sluggish flow of it inside Lady Crystalâs body feet away. It would be so easy to just reach out and wrench it out of her.
Yes! Do it! We donât need her. Weâre stronger than her. Take it. Itâs ours if you just take it.
Lilith gasped, losing her grip on her magic and stumbling backwards. No! She couldnât. She wouldnât. And even if she did what would happen to her then? Lord Sterling was still just a floor above her.
âYou little idiot!â Lady Crystal hissed. She moved before Lilith even had time to process her words. Her head snapped to one side as the older vampire struck her, talons ripping into her cheek, barely missing her eye. âI told you to do something. You are wasting my time, now try it again.â
Lilith whimpered, her eyes clenched tight against the pain but obediently sought out her magic once more. The nectar bottle had been tipped over when Lady Crystal had struck, spilling the nectar all over the floor.
Lilith focused on that spilled nectar and willed it to snake upwards and back into the bottle. Her magic burned hotter inside her, but the plasma did as she urged it to with no more than a thought. When it was done Lilith was panting and gritting her teeth against the burn, the pain in her cheek faded into the background as her healing took effect.
She couldnât help but wonder, would it always feel like this?
Last time: Lord Sterling took Lilith to the magic realm to unlock a hidden talent with in.
Now
Lilith awoke back in her cage in the tower. She lay there for a long time, staring at the ceiling swaying above her. She didnât want to move, her whole body ached as it was and she felt like liquid fire was coursing through her veins. She could only imagine how much worse that would be if she managed to get to her feet.
It took several minutes for the world to stop dancing around her, although the fire in her veins didnât go away.
It didnât get worse either.
Mikel was waiting for her in her sitting room, which was directly below where she woke up. The room was decorated in lush crimson and his black suit stood out. âLord Sterling would like to see you in the throne room once you have freshened up.â He instructed before turning to leave.
Lilith had half a mind to ignore the prompt completely, but she didnât dare. Lord Sterling frightened her, and she did not want to push her luck.
She would have to bide her time while she looked for a way to get free of this prison without Lord Sterling there to stop her.
When Lilith thought she was ready to face Lord Sterling again she flew down to land in the hallway just outside the door to the throne room. She took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
Lord Sterling was lounging on his throne, a glass of blood in one hand. And he wasnât alone. Standing several feet away from him was the vampire that had stabbed Lex.
Lilith swayed on her feet as the scene played out in front of her once again. The strong furry arms holding her in place, claws threatening to dig into her stomach with one wrong move. The sound of a sword sinking into flesh.
The scream that rent the air, and the sound of Lexâs body landing in a heap on the ground.
âAh, good. You are here.â Lord Sterlingâs voice snapped her back to the present. Her palms stung where she had dug her claws into her own flesh, and she could smell the scent of her own blood in the air as it dripped from her clenched fists onto the floor.
No one commented on that, though.
âCome in, we have much to discuss.â He instructed.
Lilithâs feet were rooted to the spot. Her eyes still locked on the murderer standing before her. âNo.â
Lord Sterling slowly straightened up in his seat, and the woman turned to look at her her eyebrow arched and an amused smirk on her painted lips. âThat was not a suggestion, Lilith.â
Before Lilith could decide for herself, her feet were moving, dragging her closer to the two older vampires very much against her will.
She hissed in frustration, snapping her fangs at the woman as she came to a stop next to her.
âStop acting like a feral fledge.â The woman sneered, âYou are a member of the Sterling Court and that demands decorum.â
âEnough Lady Crystal.â Lord Sterling spoke, âShe will learn her manners with time, one way or another. Now, Lilith, we have awakened your magic but you still need to learn to control it. That is where Lady Crystal will come in. She shall be your mentor as you explore your powers.â
âIâd rather die.â Lilith snarled at him with another, more threatening hiss.
âThat can be arranged.â Crystal drawled, examining her talons.
âLady Crystal.â Lord Sterling snapped, turning back to Lilith. âYour training begins now.â
Last time: Lilith followed Lord Sterling to the magic realm where he tells her she had magic and he wants to unlock it.
Now:
The water in the magic realm was unlike water in their home realm, Lilith quickly realized. It was cool to the touch, which wasnât so unnatural, but it tingled like a fizzy drink. A light prickle at her senses, it didnât hurt and it wasnât uncomfortable in any way it was just...there.
As Lilith waded into the water Lord Sterling slit his hand open on a small blade he had tucked in his belt and walked around the pool dripping blood onto all the rune covered stones before walking to Lilith.
He didnât enter the pool himself, but held his hand over the water and let the droplets fall. âBlood of a Grandmaster is the only way to unlock the power within you.â He explained, âDrink.â He ordered, holding out his injured hand to her.
Lilith really did not want to drink Lord Sterlingâs blood, just the thought of it repulsed her but the look in his eyes scared her so Lilith slowly brought the vampire lordâs hand to her lips. The wound was already closed and Lilith had to suppress a shudder of revulsion as she had to lick the blood from his hand.
Once the metallic tang of his blood hit her tongue she pulled back sharply stumbling as the sheer power just a taste of his blood hit her system. She trembled, curling forward, panting for unneeded air. A low hum filled the air around her...or maybe it wasnât around her but inside her. A buzzing in her veins as the elder-blood triggered something inside her.
She could feel it burning through her, like electricity just under her skin that lit up every part of her-body and soul. She arched back with a silent scream as the power overwhelmed her. The red mist of the island swirled more and more frantically, twisting up her body seemingly lifting her off the ground until she hung suspended above the water like a puppet with itâs strings cut as the magic in the air flowed around her-inside her.
It was agony. It was exquisite. It was like she had been touched by the sun and lit her up from the inside out.
The magic retreated sluggishly, sliding down her body like droplets of crimson heat.
Lilith dropped, landing in an unconscious heap in the magic pool. Only once the magic had completely disappeared from Lilithâs body and the water did Lord Sterling bend down and pick her up to carry her back home.
last time: Lilith went to meet Lord Sterling for Breakfast...it went about as well as you imagine.
now:
âYou will be given a tour of the lands another night, for now we have business that requires our immediate attention.â Lord Sterling said, striding towards what looked to be an ancient stone gazebo with strange runes carved into the pillars and floor.
Lilith stepped into the center of the circle with the older vampire, feeling a little silly, but moments later she felt the surge of his powers flood into the stone beneath their feet.
Lilith had seen Lord Sterling teleport before, this seemed to be something similar but on a much grander scale. A red mist flowed from the carved runes, swirling around the two vampires until the world was obscured from Lilithâs sight. She felt it as her power connected with the mist and she fell into it, her form dissolving into a similar form and dragged into the runes?
Or...that was what it seemed like. It was hard to truly conceptualize the experience, but moment later the mist had flowed into a different gazebo and she was herself again.
Lord Sterling waited for her just outside the circle, watching as she stumbled forwards, feeling like her legs had forgotten how to work. âYou will get used to it.â Was all he said before turning and walking into a forest. Although this forest was a far cry from the grey desolation of Forgotten Hollow. The trees here whispered of magic and she could almost see it clinging to the flora, twisting it until the plants had become something completely new. And in the center of it all sitting on the edge of a waterfall that cascaded down into the valley below, was a portal.
âDo you know where we are, Childe?â
âGlimmerbrook.â As a human this forest was nothing more than a myth. As a vampire she had learned all about it in the Academe. There were small villages of magic users scattered throughout the forest, and through that portal was the magic realm.
âIsnât the magic realm forbidden?â She asked nervously. The magic users were very protective of their realm and didnât like other occult visiting. It wasnât as bad as the Veil of the Faerie, of course, but Lilith had no interest in breaking inter-species treatise.
âWe wont be long. They wont even notice.â Lord Sterling said dismissively, when she continued to hesitate he stepped behind her and pushed her towards the glimmering magical surface. âIn you go.â
The magic portal was nothing like traveling through the stones. It was almost like she had been dowsed by cold water although she stepped out the other side completely dry. Lord Sterling walked out beside her.
Lilith gawked at their surroundings. They were in space! Or...at least it looked like space. They were standing on an island suspended in a void sprinkled with starts. Lilith could see more islands drifting nearby. She had seen paintings of this place, but never thought she would see it for herself.
The very air here buzzed with magic, tickling her skin and making the hair on the back of her neck stand up.
âYes, yes, fascinating.â Lord Sterling cut into her thoughts, âCome along, we have places to be.â And then he turned into a bat and fluttered off. Lilith following slowly behind him.
They landed on another island, the trees here were dripping black vines and there was a small pond emitting a strange red mist. More stones were scattered around the island with those same runes etched into them.
Standing on this island Lilith felt a chill go through her. This place was ancient, more ancient than anything Lilith had ever been exposed to. The magic here was almost sentient.
âWhat are we doing here?â Lilith asked at last, unable to keep her questions to herself any longer.
âIâm sure you have wondered why I wanted you to join my Court so badly. It is not something I wanted to discuss with you before you were one of mine. As you are undoubtedly aware at this point, vampire powers can manifest differently in individual people. Some gain superior strength, others the ability to walk in the sun. Others loose their ability to feel emotions in exchange for an eternal peace only the restful dead truly experience. But all the powers come from the same place and there are only a set number of them that have been observed. If a vampire lives long enough they may learn all of these powers. It is said that Grandmaster Vladious Straud had unlocked all the powers before he sequestered himself in his castle and disappeared from the known world.
But I digress. There is one power that is not accessible to all vampires. You possess the potential to unlock that power and I am going to help you.â
âWhat if I donât want that power?â Lilith asked nervously, stepping away from Lord Sterling, who followed her with his eyes.
He chuckled dryly. âOne would think you had learned by now. It is not a choice, Lilith. Now, step into the water.â
Lilithâs eyes flitted to the edge of the island, briefly entertaining the idea of trying to escape. But she knew that was a hopeless fantasy. Still, she didnât want to go into this blind. âWhat kind of power is this?â
âMagic, Lilith.â Lord Sterling said, âYou possess a special gift that we can unlock. This is a very special trait, one very few vampires ever develop. Not even a mage turned vampire retain their magic.â
Magic? That seemed so preposterous. Maybe Lord Sterling had made a mistake, or maybe he was delusional. What would happen when whatever he was trying to do to her didnât work? She knew she couldnât get away, but maybe if he realized that she wasnât what he thought she was he would let her go. She would be useless to him.
Or he would kill her.
But that would still be preferable than spending eternity under his thumb.
Lilith took a deep breath and stepped into the water.
Last time: After Lilith was kidnapped and taken to Lord Sterling, Lex returned home to seek aide from his father, Grandmaster Mortimer Goth.
Now:
Lilith thought about staying in her room and refusing to eat with Lord Sterling. But the threat of him coming in to collect her himself was frightening enough that Lilith was dressed and ready precisely at nine.
She hesitated, fluttering as a bat just outside the open window leading into the dining room where she could see Lord Sterling sitting at the head of a long table.
She really did not want to go in there, but with his eyes fixed on her form she knew there was no way to avoid it, so she flew in and landed on the floor in her human form. The dress she was wearing was more elaborate than anything she had ever warn before, including the one she wore to meet the Goth Grandmaster.
She hated it.
And that was not including the ridiculous hair style Bonnie, the woman the butler had sent up to help her get dressed for the evening, had put her hair into. Lilith thought it was the ugliest thing she had ever seen even if it was draped in diamonds and sapphires.
Lord Sterling rose to his feet when Lilith entered the room, a toothy smile that didnât reach his eyes on his lips. âMy Childe, thank you for joining me at the breaking of the fast. Please take a seat.â He said gesturing towards the chair opposite his where a second placing had been set.
Lilith didnât move for a long moment, it felt as if her body had forgotten how to move the moment he caught her eyes. Like a fawn caught in a predatorâs gaze.
Lord Sterlingâs smile thinned, âSit. Childe.â He ordered, and Lilith did.
âExcellent.â Lord Sterling said with a pleased glint in his eye as he too took his seat. âMikel, the Nectar.â He said, holding out his empty glass to be filled.
Mikel, who had been standing patiently against the wall holding a bottle of Plasma Nectar stepped forwards to pour their drinks and moments later Bonnie came into the room holding two plates of pasta with a chilled plasma sauce.
Lilithâs stomach turned just looking at it. She hadnât had the stomach for much solid food since turning, even when cooked with Vampires in mind. She had learned how to cook mostly because Lex had seemed to enjoy it when she did.
They sat in uncomfortable silence, and she could feel the older vampire studying her from across the room as he ate. âEat, Childe.â He ordered when he noticed she had not touched her food.
âIâm not hungry.â She said quietly, staring out the window and wishing this whole ordeal would be over soon.
Lord Sterling sighed. âThat was not a suggestion, Lilith. You will eat.â
Lilith clenched her jaw, reluctantly reaching for her glass. She wouldnât be able to keep the pasta down, so this was the only other option.
Sipping at the glass seemed to appease him and he went back to his own meal.
When he was finally done and Mikel started to clear the dishes away Lilith rose to leave only to have Lord Sterling stop her. âI did not give you permission to leave, Child.â He said the words calmly, but Lilith felt the cool steel in his tone.
She paused, but didnât turn around.
She heard him stand up from his chair and the steady thud of his shoes on the floor as he moved to stand behind her. âWe have much to talk about, donât we my dear?â
âI have nothing to say to you.â Lilith said softly.
âThen you will Listen.â Lord Sterling said, striding passed her. âCome along, we have a busy night before us.â
Lilith tried to remain where she was, refusing to follow him. But as he walked away she could feel the bond tugging at the back of her mind. The feeling grew until a sharp pain radiated from behind her eye and a strange pressure built up in her chest.
She resisted for several minutes before her bat form overtook her and she flew to her Sireâs side. She landed gasping behind him, leaning against the wall. He had thankfully stopped walking, seemingly waiting for her to arrive.
âIâm sure you will not try that again. Now, come along.â Then he turned and pushed through the front door and into the open air of the valley. âWelcome, Lilith Darling, to Forgotten Hollow. Your new home.â

Last time: Lex and Lilith were ambushed and Lilith was kidnapped.
Now:
âFather, I need to speak with you!â Lex exclaimed as he stormed into the great hall. His voice echoed off the high stone walls of the castle, alerting everyone to his presence.
Blood red tapestries and banners hung from the ceiling, a long crimson rug led up to where his father sat in his throne on the far side of the room, Lex's mother standing vigilant at his side.
âAlexander! My boy. Itâs so good to see you, have you finally come to visit? Did you bring your girl with you, your mother and I have been very excited to meet this vixen who has stolen you right out from under our noses.â Mortimer teased as he stood to greet his son.
Lex strode across the room, his every step filled with tension. âThey took her!â He said as he reached them, âI tried to stop them but I never stood a chance, they had a Master with them.â
âDarling...is that your blood on your shirt?â Bella asked with concern, stepping forward to check on him.
Lex waved her worry away, âItâs not important right now.â
âIf you are injured it is very much important.â His mother said sternly. âWho did this?â
Before Lex could answer his sister batted into the room, landing on the floor several feet away. As soon as she had regained her human form she rushed forward to embrace her brother, âYouâre home! Itâs been so strange with you gone.â
A wet nose pressed against Cassandraâs leg and she looked down, a frown quickly replacing her smile. âAlexander, why do you have Ghast with you?â She asked, picking up the little fox. Then they all watched as a raven appeared in a cloud of green magic before landing heavily on Alexanderâs shoulder. "Mordred?"
Lex cast her a curious look, âHow do you know Ghast?â He asked back.
âHeâs my best friendâs familiar.â She answered before realization slowly dawned on her. âWait...youâre Lex!â She accused.
âYou know Lilith?â Alexander asked, this was news to him, although some of his conversations with Lilith were starting to make a little more sense. He shook his head, focusing back on the matter at hand, âIt doesnât matter right now, Lord Sterling took her.â
Last time: Lex and Lilith were ambushed as they were leaving the Arcane Academe. Lex was injured, and Lilith was taken.
Now:
Lilith woke to a dark foreign room. Sleep clung to her thoughts making everything a bit foggy. Memories from the last night came to her in waves, leaving her gasping for breath on the bed. âLex.â She whispered as she sobbed into her hands.
How had this even happened? Everything was going so well.
Too well.
âwe are better off without him.â a dark thought crossed her mind. âhe was holding us back.â
Another sob escaped her as she clutched at her hair.
No! No that wasnât right. Her life had only gotten better when Lex came into it. He protected her, guided her, allowed her to thrive in a way she hadnât before, too choked by fear and uncertainty.
And now he was gone.
âIt is for the best.â
âMiss Lilith?â The unexpected voice startled Lilith, who had dozed off again. A stranger was standing in what she had to assume was supposed to be her room. His black hair was slicked back from his face and he was in a neat black suit. âOh, good you are awake.â He said stepping further into the room and setting a pile of dark fabric on the chair.
Lilith regarded him suspiciously, curling in on herself where she sat on the bed.
âYou may call me Mikel. I Lord Sterlingâs butler. You will have the day to yourself to get acquainted with your new home. You may ask me or Bonnie, our cook, if you need anything. Lord Sterling will be sleeping until late this evening. See that you do not disturb his rest. Breakfast is promptly at 9:00 pm and you are to wear this gown. Do not miss it. You do not want Lord Sterling to come fetch you himself. I will have Bonnie come up to attend you this evening. Have a good day.â
With that the man climbed back down the ladder which was the only exit in the room. Once Mikel was gone Lilith turned to the window, peaking outside.
Even in the middle of the day the land was dark, a white mist rolling across the mountains and blotting out the worst of the suns rays.
Lilith had no idea where she was, it looked nothing like any land she had ever visited, and seemed almost devoid of color all together. She shivered, looking away from the window. Something about the valley gave her an uneasy feeling.
