It’s official! Nintendo has announced that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be playable with Game Cube controllers. Now matches on Smash are going to get extremely serious!
Just what is this game? Is it a traditional fighting style game branded with Pokemon? Or is it something else?
I have a possibility that perhaps no one has thought of.
Please take note that many inferences in this article/whatever are based upon supposed "leaks." If you want concrete evidence, you probably shouldn't be here.
Anyway, let's start out by what some think the above image represents.
Some speculate that Pokken Fighters is a traditional fighting game akin to Street Fighter with Pokemon characters. The logic behind that is that the screenshot above does not depict the two Pokemon in a Stadium-esque arena and instead illustrates an arena typical to fighting games that we're used to, like Marvel vs. Capcom.
In addition, the name Pokken Fighters sounds similar to Tekken, which was produced by Namco. Namco has sporadically produced a number of different games for Nintendo franchises, and following their merge with Bandai in 2006, this trend continued. Notable examples include StarFox Assault, Mario Superstar Baseball and Donkey Konga. It is logical to think that Pokken Fighters could be an upcoming game in development by Namco Bandai, and to further justify this, they are also assisting the development of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS, another fighting style game.
Now I'm not saying any of those points are wrong. It's a solid theory, however, I want to add a possibility to the type of game that Pokken Fighters could be.
Remember that GameXplain video I linked a bit earlier? Well, one of the hosts brings up an unintentional point that couldn't have been made in August of 2013. They mention Poken, a technology that utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) to allow the exchange of online social networking data between two keychain accessories. In the video, they relate it to the Wii U's Game Pad and how it can be used in a similar fashion to Pokemon Rumble U, a Pokemon game that utilizes figurines.

Fast forward to May 2014. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced that an NFC concept would be implemented in more games for the Wii U and 3DS. Wii U already has Pokemon Rumble U, which utilizes NFC technology for figurines, but Pokken Fighters might also utilize figurines too. This archived thread on 4chan (Okay look, I know it's 4chan but bare with me for a few seconds) has an image that is of our interest, specifically the one below:
Since this comes from 4chan, I decided to do some deeper searching to see if this user actually posted this information, and I confirmed that this tweet does exist as seen by this link.
So let's look at the translation. It states that Pokken Tournaments is the name of the actual game itself, and Pokken Fighters is the name of the figurines that you use in the game. Pokken Tournaments and Pokken Fighters are trademarks that Nintendo registered shortly after the tease of the photo showcasing Lucario seemingly in a battle against Blaziken shown above. (Source) Most likely the figures the user posted about refers to the NFC figurines that Nintendo plans to incorporate into future titles as of May 2014. Considering that this tweet was posted on August 20th, this could possibly be legitimate.Â
Okay, so for all intents and purposes, let's assume that Pokken Tournament/Fighters is a Wii U game that utilizes NFC figurines. What could this mean? We can't just assume that it'd play as a traditional fighting game with Pokemon in it, since it'll have to use the figurines as a major feature to be on par on how Nintendo plans to use them. Perhaps, like with Pokemon Rumble U, the figurines could be of Pokemon that the player can use to scan the figurines to obtain stronger Pokemon in the game itself. If you can see, there is a symbol for the fighting Pokemon in the trading card game on the top right corner of the photo. Since Pokken Tournament/Fighters no doubt sound like a fighting-heavy game, does it mean that the figurines featured here could be of Fighting-type Pokemon? In Pokemon Rumble U, all figurines were of smaller Pokemon, including Eevee, Pikachu, Mew, and Shaymin. Generally, fighting-type Pokemon are taller, humanoid shape. Could this change how the figurines are?
