The Waking Nightmare

Entry Point 1: Instead of being frozen in ice multiple times, the second incident involves Adam's consciousness being pulled into the mind of a grieving woman with superpowers. Angela's retreated into a world of her own where she is in her early 20s, seeking solace in friendships with favorite literary characters and refusing to acknowledge the tragedy of her husband and daughter's deaths. He can be dragged out early anytime between 1905 and 1973*.

Entry Point 2: In 1973 [but it's very easy to set in pretty much any other time] he wakes to find that his unconscious form is in the care of a man who was obsessed with Frankenstein's Monster. There's a whole weird brain/soul transferance plot here which leads to an embittered Adam seeking out a cult, only to kill most of them when he realizes their goal is not to help him, but to bring the being they worship to life in his body.

Entry Point 3: Adam finds another scientist trying to follow in Victor's footsteps. The unfortunate man does manage to create his own monster; it is significantly less sapient than Adam, but just as angry. The new monster kills its creator and his wife in front of their teenaged son, but Adam manages to protect the kid. Shortly afterwards, a private investigator shows up trying to track down Frankenstein's Monster and saying rather menacing things about his client. The duo assume the worst and go on the run, spending several weeks on a cross-country roadtrip. [There is a beautifully silly plot in the comics about a villainous organization called I.C.O.N. whose leader is "Rainbow". I'm probably going to make it just the remnants of the cult.]

Entry Point 4: Cornered, Adam and his new friend get imprisoned by the cultists, only for the detective to free them and then kidnap them again. Turns out the client was one of the few decent members of the Frankenstein family, however. When their enemies find them and attack, Adam and his new friends must protect each other.

Why not take a little trip to Lionel's island home? It's said to be a lovely place, after all. Scenic and full of old-fashioned charm, but with plenty to keep the mind busy; welcoming to scientists and philosophers alike. This is a perfect refuge if you need a little peace and tranquility, or maybe just a friendly spot to lay low for a while.

Its leader keeps his followers in seclusion, though, and the few proselytizers he sends out tend to ignore visitors. It seems only islanders can catch the plague their so-called prophet offers protection from, so there's no point talking to outsiders about their plight.

Oh, don't worry. They just told you. They're confident it won't affect you! 

To the north, as you may discover if you're perceptive, stealthy, or seem especially trustworthy, the island's leader plots alongside his mother and his dearest friend, seeking to rescue a cherished companion from the clutches of the fanatics. 

But they may have an uphill battle against superstition. Every denizen of the island, even the trio of conspirators, insists upon one thing. They say that shortly after the advent of this highly fatal disease, a black sun, with billowing tendrils of shadow, rose from the earth. All that afternoon, the land was cast into darkness.

(No, friend. Some of them have seen a solar eclipse before. This wasn't what that was. The world-renowned astronomer who once inhabited the island's lone observatory would have told you the same thing.)

Many further claim that, only a few weeks ago, three false suns (no, they were meteors; they crashed into the purple sea –) briefly appeared alongside the true one.

I wait for you in its tallest tower.”

As always, he’d added the rough English translation before his first inscription. When Lionel had first begun leaving these little messages, it had been with the hope that, however slim the chance, some other human creature might find a way into this strange land. Now, with that hope long dead, was it habit or fancy that drove him? Still, he added those few words before moving on.

Next, he drew the customary sketch: a human figure with long, untamed curls. He was perhaps a little too kind to this imitation of himself, sparing its eyes the wild, hollow despair he saw reflected in his own. All the same, he hoped it would be enough to alleviate the shock his form might otherwise hold for any potential new companion.

Two were lost early, and for a year, the three survivors never left each other's side.
