LEW AYRES as Paul in ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) dir. Lewis Milestone
Dr. Kildare's Victory (1942)
After being brought back to life by Dr. Kildare(Lew Ayres)'s cardiac massage, Cynthia Charles(Ann Ayars) falls for him. Even though she knows that his fiancée died in an accident just hours before their wedding, she longs to become a part of his life.
"Um, while I was convalescing, I had a dream. A lovely dream, and in it I was looking at you with my beautiful blue eyes, and I said, 'Jimmy Kildare, either you be nice to me or else.'"
"Or else? What?"
"In my dream, for just one gorgeous moment, I was in a wonderful spot. I could jolly well make you or break you. Now, the question is, If that weren't a dream, Could I make you stop wanting to take my temperature and let me give you one?"
"That's, um, still not the method for handling men who are doctors."
"Are you sure it isn't? Are you sure that a doctor wouldn't save his career, even If he had to take it as a gift wrapped up in a girl? A quite unique and extraordinary girl. Like me, for instance?"
-Dr. Kildare's Victory (1942, W.S. Van Dyke)
Jennifer Jones ice skates in Central Park in PORTRAIT OF JENNIE (1948) “ARE YOU IN LOVE THIS WEEK? If you are — you’ll get a double thrill from this most romantic of all love stories about a man who was in love with a girl who lived twenty years before his time. If you aren’t — it may change your ideas on the subject for the rest of your life.”

PORTRAIT OF JENNIE + date nights in New York
I foresee that I shall have my hands full. Well, well, we can’t get through this world without our share of trouble. I’ve had a pretty easy life so far but my time has come at last. Well now, you’ll do alright.

[5/50] Marilla Makes Up Her Mind
How dare you call me skinny and ugly? How dare you say I’m freckled and red-headed? You’re a rude, impolite and unfeeling woman! How dare you say such things about me? How would you like to have such things said about you? How would you like to be called fat and clumsy and probably haven’t a spark of imagination in you?

requested by: anon
request: 19th century womenswear inspired by naval themes such as ships, sailing, and the seas (either more with a uniform appearance or more costume-y)
commentary from the curator: I ended up combining the two options and going for theatre costumes that take inspiration from uniforms (and also sailing more generally). these are both from a production of HMS Pinafore, and I hope they fit what you were looking for! if not, please feel free to send in another request! ☺️
