Fringe Re-Watch #20: “Unleashed”
“Unleashed” (Season 1, Episode 16)

Directed by: Brad Anderson
Originally Aired: April 14th, 2009

“Walter, why is there an ear in the omelette?”
Ah, the infamous Charlie bug episode! Unleashed can be seen many ways. An episode that attempted to give more layers to Charlie, who up until now, seemed like he was just a character to be Olivia’s work friend and to always get Olivia in or out of something. It can be seen as an episode that makes Walter face responsibility for his past experiments. It can also be seen as a monster of the week filler episode before the show dives into it’s last few episodes and a lot will change for the show. However, on this last re-watch, I saw Unleashed as something else. It was a reminder of just how good the show’s core characters are and an intriguing study on how Walter Bishop makes the same choices in this season 1 filler episode, that he would later make in the series finale.

Fringe Re-Watch #19: “Inner Child”
“Inner Child” (Season 1, Episode 15)
Written by: Brad Caleb Kane & Julia Cho
Directed by: Frederick E. O. Toye
Originally Aired: April 7th, 2009
Glyph Code: WALTER
“Inner Child” is a weird Fringe episode when you’re doing a re-watch. In 2009, it felt like a regular episode of the week after the show took a nearly 2 month hiatus after the bombshell episode that was “Ability”. This episode also feels like it could’ve aired at any point in time in season 1. It could’ve been episode 5, The only thing keeping it from something like that is Olivia’s sister and niece staying with her, but even that plot seems to come and go. And yet, “Inner Child” might be one of the most important episodes in terms of the overall story and mythos. This child, who felt like a one-off character for about 98% of the episode, suddenly peaked our interest with his very last scene and became an unanswered question until he became one of the most important characters in the final season. That makes “Inner Child” in a bit of a limbo of feeling like an episode of the week, but knowing how important this is. And lost in both of that is how “Inner Child” is really an episode about letting the viewer get to know Olivia a little better.

Fringe Rewatch #18: “Ability”
“Ability” (Season 1, Episode 14)

Boy, it’s been awhile. I haven’t ran this blog in 5 years and I left the rewatch off at “The Transformation” where we ended the John Scott arc. While some believe “Bound” (Episode 11) to be the start of the second half of season 1, since it comes after the winter hiatus, I have always believed The Transformation to be the end of the first half of season 1 and Ability to be the start of the second half, especially with the debut of Cortexiphan. And what a start it is.

So i don’t have the means to record currently like i did before, but i’m planning on doing written re-watches every friday. Starting this thursday, i’m gonna pick up where i left off 5 years ago (!) with “Ability” one of, if not the best episode of season 1. So, yeah, this is gonna be great
Olivia Dunham. FBI.
Remember when Olivia drank a quarter of a glass of worms because she wanted to retrieve her memories from over there after her accident?
AND WALTER PLANNED ON ADDING SOME STRAWBERRIES TO THE DRINK SO IT WOULDNT TASTE SO BAD
I can’t right now. I had forgotten what a gem Fringe was.
Am I the only one weird enough to think of the unfortunate victims of David Robert Jones in Ability when I see a Tesla Model 3 with its closed-off front grill?
